Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has issued a dire warning about the looming artificial intelligence revolution, predicting that AI will soon dominate humanity, wipe out huge numbers of jobs, and unleash unprecedented economic turmoil.

After years of publicly championing the technology’s potential, Gates is now sounding the alarm about the consequences of allowing AI to advance without adequate safeguards.

In a lengthy new essay, the billionaire warned that humanity is rapidly approaching one of the most disruptive periods it has ever faced.

“AI will either be the greatest equalizer ever invented, or the worst source of injustice,” Gates wrote.

“Even under the best circumstances,” he continued, the “transition to this new AI era will be one of the most turbulent times in human history.”

However, Gates says he has been stunned by what he describes as a lack of urgency surrounding the threat.

“I am in a state of shock that I’m sort of the first one saying, ‘This is crazy. This is insane,’” Gates told Semafor.

“I’m just deafened by the silence.”

Gates Warns AI Will Destroy More Jobs Than It Creates

Gates warns that the coming transformation will be fundamentally different from previous technological revolutions.

Historically, technological advances have eliminated certain occupations while eventually creating new industries and jobs.

Gates now believes AI could break that pattern.

“There isn’t a job that isn’t affected,” Gates warned.

“It’s different not because the speed is different, but the breadth is what makes it utterly, utterly a unique moment in evolutionary history.”

Gates also fears that mass displacement could trigger a furious public backlash against the technology.

“What is the backlash going to be as these jobs go away?” he asked.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would “absolutely” support prohibiting Sharia law in the United States, arguing that Americans should be governed under one legal system rather than competing religious codes.

Trump made the remarks during a live interview with conservative radio host Glenn Beck, who asked whether the president would support or sign legislation aimed at barring Sharia law.

“Number one, on Sharia law, I would absolutely say that’s not this country,” Trump said.

“There’s no Sharia law,” the president continued.

“And you do have pockets of it, as you know.”

The president pointed to developments in Europe as a warning for the United States.

“And you go to London, you go to Paris,” Trump said.

“It’s almost like a second way of life. It’s ridiculous.”

Trump: ‘You Have One System’

Trump framed the issue as a matter of common sense rather than ideology.

“You and I have people that I think we’re more based on common sense than we are in ideology,” Trump told Beck.

“Good politics is all about common sense anyway.”

He then gave his clearest answer on whether he would act against Sharia law.

“But I would absolutely prohibit the Sharia law thing,” Trump said.

“And it is happening in this country a little bit.

“And when we see it, we take it out.

“And you have to take it out.”

Trump’s comments come as Sharia law has become an issue in Michigan’s closely watched U.S. Senate race.

Socialist Democrat Abdul El-Sayed is facing Republican Mike Rogers in November after defeating Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) in the Democratic Party primary earlier this month.

The contest is expected to play an important role in the battle for control of the Senate.

Republicans have recently scrutinized El-Sayed over previous statements concerning Sharia law.

Vice President JD Vance criticized El-Sayed last week over remarks the Democrat made during a 2022 Council on American-Islamic Relations banquet, where he objected to efforts aimed at preventing courts from considering Sharia law.

El-Sayed Campaign Confirms Personal Adherence to Sharia Principles

El-Sayed’s campaign separately confirmed that he follows Sharia principles in his personal religious life after comments from a 2009 interview resurfaced.

Those remarks concerned El-Sayed’s decision to obtain a Sharia-compliant mortgage.

His campaign has maintained that his personal religious observance does not amount to supporting the imposition of religious law through government.

Trump’s comments nevertheless put the president firmly on record on the broader issue.

Asked directly whether he would support federal action against Sharia law, Trump left little room for interpretation.

“I would absolutely prohibit” it, Trump said.

A world-renowned Harvard University professor is sounding the alarm about an emerging AI-driven system that threatens to strip ordinary people of their autonomy and hand unprecedented power to unelected tech corporations.

Historian Jill Lepore warns that powerful elites are constructing what she calls an “artificial state,” a system in which critical decisions once made by citizens and accountable governments are increasingly surrendered to machines controlled by corporations.

Lepore has previously described the transformation in chilling terms as the “factory farming of public life.”

Speaking on “The New York Times” podcast “Hard Fork,” Lepore warned that the traditional nation-state, particularly constitutional democracy, is being steadily displaced by technology that removes human beings from the decision-making process.

Government under such a system would operate “not by the consent of people but by machines that are making decisions,” Lepore said.

And those machines belong to corporations.

‘They’re Not Interested in What the People Want’

Lepore stresses that the “artificial state” has not completely arrived.

However, she warns that its infrastructure is already being constructed around the public.

Meanwhile, influential elites are openly envisioning a future in which their technological systems wield powers traditionally reserved for governments accountable to voters.

“The rhetoric that comes out of this particular historical moment is really about the evanescence of modern liberal democracy, constitutional democracy,” Lepore said.

According to Lepore, the people pushing that vision aren’t “interested in what the people want.”

“Because actually, what the people want is not to have AI and not to have data centers,” she continued.

“So that’s the crisis.”

Lepore expands on the warning in her upcoming book “The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State.”

Her investigation began with a deceptively simple question about the increasing replacement of human interaction with automated systems.

“Who decided this is a way we should be living?” Lepore asks.

‘Factory Farming of Public Life’

Lepore argues that society is undergoing a profound transfer of power as corporations increasingly control the infrastructure through which Americans communicate, obtain information, and participate in public life.

News, political information, election coverage, and even information about candidates increasingly reach voters through privately controlled digital platforms.

AI is now accelerating that transformation.

Lepore previously described the emerging system in an article for The New Yorker as the “factory farming of public life, the sorting and segmenting, the isolation and alienation, the destruction of human community.”

The warning points to a society in which human beings are increasingly separated from one another while algorithms mediate their relationships with institutions, businesses, information, and eventually government itself.

Instead of interacting with another person, Americans increasingly encounter chatbots.

Instead of discussing political questions with neighbors, officials, or experts, voters are beginning to ask AI chatbots whom they should support.

Political communications are increasingly being generated with AI, while government officials are using the technology to assist decision-making.

Meanwhile, AI-powered systems are making mass surveillance dramatically easier by processing enormous quantities of information collected about ordinary citizens.

Silicon Valley Pushes AI as ‘Inevitable’

Lepore also takes aim at one of the most powerful arguments coming from Silicon Valley: that the AI revolution cannot be stopped.

The public is repeatedly told that artificial intelligence is inevitable and that governments must get out of the way or risk falling behind.

Lepore rejects that fatalism as a “bogus premise.”

Central to the argument, she says, are claims that government regulation inevitably destroys innovation and that technological advancement inherently strengthens democracy.

Lepore warns that neither proposition should simply be accepted.

The same promises accompanied previous technological revolutions.

“So now, the AI people come back with the same argument that was made about the internet — the personal computer, the internet, and social media,” she said.

Machines Are Moving Deeper Into Human Decision-Making

The stakes are now significantly higher because AI is not merely another communications technology.

The machines are increasingly being inserted directly into decisions that once required human judgment.

AI systems are influencing what people read, what information they encounter, how institutions communicate with them, and how governments and corporations process enormous quantities of personal data.

Lepore’s warning is ultimately about who controls those systems and therefore who controls the decisions they increasingly make.

Under constitutional government, political power is theoretically derived from citizens who can hold elected officials accountable.

Under the “artificial state” Lepore describes, that relationship begins to break down as algorithms controlled by enormously powerful corporations assume functions once exercised by people and public institutions.

The result is the chilling system she describes as the “factory farming of public life,” where citizens are sorted, segmented, surveilled, and increasingly isolated from one another while machines quietly assume greater control over their lives.

And Lepore’s most disturbing question remains unanswered:

“Who decided this is a way we should be living?”

A Colorado man who suffocated his healthy 91-year-old mother to death by placing a plastic bag over her head has avoided prison with a slap on the wrist and is now set to inherit a fortune from his dead mom’s estate.

Instead of jailing David Norton for his crime, a liberal judge ordered him to donate $25,000 to an organization that promotes “assisted suicide.”

In a cushy plea deal, Norton, 68, pleaded guilty to manslaughter by aiding suicide and tampering with physical evidence after the death of his mother, Mildred Roller.

Norton and his sister, Kim Roller, were accused of conspiring to end the elderly woman’s life.

However, their mother was not terminally ill and had not been declared mentally incompetent.

According to an autopsy reviewed by a grand jury, Mildred Roller died from “asphyxia due to a bag over the head and displacement of oxygen by nitrogen gas.”

Despite those facts, neither Norton nor his sister will serve time behind bars.

Judge Questions Whether Killing Should Have Been Charged

Boulder County District Court Judge Dea Lindsey sentenced Norton to two years of probation and ordered him to donate $25,000 to a medical aid-in-dying charity.

Kim Roller reportedly received an identical sentence.

Lindsey openly questioned whether Norton should have faced criminal charges at all.

“I go back and forth on whether this should be a charge at all,” Lindsey said.

“I think it’s a philosophical issue.”

The remarkable comments came despite Colorado law limiting legal physician-assisted suicide to qualifying circumstances.

Mildred Roller was not terminally ill.

Yet the punishment for illegally euthanizing her included financially supporting an organization associated with the same practice.

Notably, Judge Lindsey’s judicial profile states that she previously worked on “dependency and neglect” cases for Boulder County.

Mother Was Suffocated With Nitrogen Gas

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office determined that the 91-year-old died after oxygen was displaced by nitrogen while a plastic bag covered her head.

Dr. Meredith Frank wrote in the autopsy opinion that Roller died a harrowing death.

She died from “asphyxia due to a bag over the head and displacement of oxygen by nitrogen gas,” Frank revealed.

The autopsy also established that she “did not have a terminal illness and had not been found incompetent,” according to the Colorado Hometown Weekly.

Norton ultimately accepted a plea agreement with the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office rather than face trial on the original allegations.

Defendants Stand to Benefit from Estate

The case becomes even more controversial because both defendants were positioned to benefit financially from Mildred Roller’s estate.

According to the Colorado Hometown Weekly, her will directed that her children receive equal shares of her estate.

The estate reportedly included a savings account containing approximately $655,540.

The issue has triggered a backlash over the inheritance Norton will ultimately receive.

Many are questioning whether Colorado law should block his ability to collect from the estate because of his conviction.

Nevertheless, the potential financial benefit has added another troubling dimension to a case in which two people admitted participating in the death of an elderly relative and avoided incarceration.

Assisted-Suicide Advocate Condemns Case

Colorado law allows physician-assisted suicide under specific legal conditions, but those rules did not apply to Mildred Roller.

Live Action’s Bridget Sielicki condemned the broader practice.

“There is never a situation in which it is appropriate to help a person end his or her own life, even if sick or disabled,” Sielicki said.

The sentence now leaves Norton and Roller on probation rather than behind bars.

And in one of the case’s strangest twists, a punishment imposed for illegally helping end a woman’s life will send $50,000 combined to an organization associated with legal assisted suicide.

A healthy 91-year-old woman was suffocated with a plastic bag and nitrogen gas.

The people who helped do it walked out of court without a prison sentence.

Dr. Anthony Fauci has been dragged deeper into the COVID origins scandal after newly detailed court records exposed a backchannel operation involving his senior advisor and EcoHealth Alliance President Peter Daszak as they worked to counter the lab-leak theory and protect controversial coronavirus research.

The explosive communications show former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) senior adviser Dr. David Morens moving sensitive discussions onto private Gmail accounts while assuring Daszak that Fauci was aware of what was happening behind the scenes.

The records also reveal Daszak personally thanking Fauci for publicly helping “dispel” the lab-leak theory while Morens worked privately to protect EcoHealth and restore its federal funding.

Morens has already pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges over the scheme.

However, the newly exposed communications are now raising fresh questions about exactly what Fauci knew while his own senior adviser was conducting what Daszak himself celebrated as “behind the scenes shenanigans.”

Fauci Was ‘Fully Aware’ as Backchannel Operation Unfolded

The scandal erupted after the Trump administration suspended EcoHealth’s National Institutes of Health grant in April 2020 amid mounting scrutiny of the organization’s taxpayer-funded bat coronavirus research in China.

EcoHealth had funneled federal money to the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), the laboratory that would later become central to questions about whether COVID-19 escaped from a lab.

After the funding was suspended, Morens began communicating with Daszak outside official government channels.

“This is sent from my gmail account. Please send all replies here To gmail,” Morens wrote.

“There are things I cant say except [Senior NIAID Official 1] is aware and I have learned that there are ongoing efforts within NIH to steer through this with minimal damage to you.”

Morens made clear that he intended to fight to restore EcoHealth’s funding.

“My boxing gloves are on and laced up,” he told Daszak.

“Let’s win this anti-science battle, get you refunded… then settle the scores and kick some ass,” he added.

The newly detailed records also describe Fauci as “fully aware” while “damage control” was underway.

That revelation is particularly significant because Fauci was simultaneously emerging as one of the most influential public voices dismissing suspicions that COVID-19 may have originated in a laboratory.

Daszak Personally Thanked Fauci for Helping ‘Dispel’ Lab-Leak Theory

Daszak’s own communications show that he recognized the importance of Fauci’s public statements.

In April 2020, Daszak personally emailed Fauci to thank him for pushing back against the lab-leak theory.

Daszak praised Fauci’s comments as “brave” and said they would “help dispel the myths being spun around the virus’ origins.”

He also told Fauci that he looked forward to thanking him personally.

Fauci responded:

“Peter: Many thanks for your kind note. Best Regards, Tony.”

Behind the scenes, meanwhile, Fauci’s senior adviser was helping Daszak navigate the crisis threatening EcoHealth’s funding and reputation.

Morens even agreed to produce a scientific commentary promoting Daszak’s work while keeping the EcoHealth president’s involvement out of sight, creating the appearance of an independent scientific assessment.

Prosecutors say Morens and his co-conspirators concealed communications while working to “counter the narrative that Covid-19 leaked from a lab.”

‘Behind the Scenes Shenanigans’

Daszak was apparently so pleased with Morens’s assistance that he sent two bottles of The Prisoner Red Napa Valley wine to the government scientist’s Maryland home.

The accompanying message was remarkably candid.

“This is the first of what I hope will be a continued series of expressions of gratitude for your advice, support and behind the scenes shenanigans in my battle against your bosses boss, his boss and the ultimate boss on the hill,” Daszak wrote.

The “ultimate boss” was President Donald Trump.

Daszak praised Morens’s “courage and commitment” given what he called the “vindictive nature of the Administration.”

Morens would later publish an article promoting the argument that COVID-19 emerged through natural spillover while defending the importance of Daszak’s research.

At the same time, Morens was openly discussing how to keep damaging communications away from Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.

He described FOIA requests as “dreadful and paranoia-inducing.”

“We are all smart enough to know to never have smoking guns, and if we did we wouldn’t put them in emails, and if we found them we’d delete them,” Morens wrote.

He even boasted that he could “make emails disappear after I am FOIA’d.”

Morens has now pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit offenses or to defraud the United States and faces up to five years in prison.

Neither Fauci nor Daszak has been charged in connection with Morens’s case.

15,000 Coronavirus Samples Were Sitting in Wuhan

The backchannel discussions become even more alarming when viewed alongside what Daszak was privately telling Morens about the scale of EcoHealth’s work in Wuhan.

In April 2020, Daszak told Morens that EcoHealth still had “15,000 coronavirus samples in freezers in Wuhan” and could sequence “700+ CoVs.”

Those samples were sitting at the center of the very research network facing questions about the origins of a pandemic that was rapidly spreading across the planet.

Yet rather than aggressively investigating the laboratory-origin possibility, powerful scientific figures publicly pushed the natural-spillover explanation.

Daszak himself helped orchestrate the infamous 2020 letter published in The Lancet that condemned lab-leak suspicions as “conspiracy theories.”

His own conflicts surrounding the Wuhan research were not initially disclosed.

Daszak was then placed on The Lancet’s task force investigating COVID’s origins before eventually being removed amid mounting scrutiny of those conflicts.

FBI Ordered Agents Not to Stop Daszak

The extraordinary treatment of Daszak continued after his controversial World Health Organization mission to China.

When Daszak returned to the United States in February 2021, Customs and Border Protection reportedly identified him as “an extremely high person of interest.”

Officers prepared a Tactical Terrorism Response Team examination.

Records showed officials wanted to question Daszak about his extensive relationship with the Wuhan Institute of Virology, his NIH-funded coronavirus research, his contacts, and the biological samples connected to that work.

Officials also noted that “much of the funding DASZAK receives is put towards gain of function research.”

But the examination never happened.

Three days before Daszak arrived, the FBI’s New York field office intervened.

“Please be advised FBI New York requested we do not stop the subject,” officials were told.

The planned examination was cancelled, and Daszak passed through JFK without the interrogation officers had prepared.

Intelligence Challenging the Official Narrative Was Sidelined

Other evidence challenging the preferred natural-origin narrative was also pushed into the background.

Defense Intelligence Agency analysis dating back to 2020 concluded that the molecular biology and genome of SARS-CoV-2 were “consistent with the hypothesis that SARS-CoV-2 was a lab-engineered virus.”

A later Department of Defense report revealed that intelligence supporting a possible laboratory origin faced restrictions on dissemination.

Meanwhile, the influential “Proximal Origin” paper became one of the primary scientific weapons used to dismiss the lab-leak theory publicly.

Yet subsequent records exposed extensive behind-the-scenes coordination surrounding that paper and showed that scientists privately entertained concerns about laboratory involvement that were far less dismissive than the message eventually presented to the public.

Fauci Faces Fresh Questions

EcoHealth and Daszak were eventually debarred from federal funding for five years after investigations into the organization’s taxpayer-funded coronavirus research and compliance with federal requirements.

EcoHealth has since collapsed.

Morens has now admitted to participating in a conspiracy to hide federal records.

And the communications leave a damaging documentary trail running straight through Fauci’s own office.

The critical distinction is that Daszak’s wine and “behind the scenes shenanigans” message were directed to Morens, not Fauci.

But Morens was Fauci’s senior adviser.

Leading researchers are warning that artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to design biological weapons far deadlier than any other virus unleashed on humanity, according to a chilling new report.

The alarming report warns that rapidly advancing AI technology will soon enable the creation of engineered bioweapons capable of causing devastation far beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

The warning comes as AI systems become increasingly capable of performing advanced biological research that was previously limited to highly trained scientists.

A report published this week by the RAND Corporation cautions that AI could dramatically lower the barriers to designing and developing biological weapons, making it easier for malicious actors to create enhanced or entirely novel pathogens.

AI Could Lower Barriers to Building Bioweapons

The researchers warn that advances in AI-enabled biotechnology could fundamentally change the global threat landscape.

“AI-enabled biotechnology might lower the technical, operational, and motivational barriers to creating biological weapons,” the report states.

“It might also enable devastating attacks involving enhanced or novel pathogens, including events far worse than historical pandemics that caused many millions of fatalities globally.”

The report focuses on what it describes as “high-consequence AI-enabled biological incidents.”

These events would be capable of causing societal collapse or systemic destabilization on a massive scale.

Researchers specifically examined scenarios involving biological disasters many times more destructive than COVID-19.

The report states that it is focused on biological events capable of producing impacts “on the order of ten times the scale of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic or greater.”

Anthropic Restricts Powerful New AI Capabilities

The warning comes just as one of the world’s leading AI companies announced a major breakthrough in biological research.

Anthropic revealed Tuesday that its Claude AI successfully designed proteins that bound to 14 of 15 laboratory targets during testing.

While the achievement represents a significant scientific advance, Anthropic acknowledged that the same capabilities could be exploited to develop biological weapons.

“Without robust safety measures, they could enable bad actors to perform dangerous research, such as the development of bioweapons,” the company said.

As a result, Anthropic said it is withholding the technology from public release.

“As we work to deliver these capabilities safely via trusted access programs, protein design and other dual-use research biology capabilities remain unavailable for general access in Claude Fable 5.”

AI Companies Push for Federal Oversight

The growing concern has prompted some of the biggest names in artificial intelligence to seek stronger safeguards.

Executives from Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic recently urged Congress to require companies that sell DNA and RNA materials to verify customers and maintain records of biological orders.

The proposal is intended to prevent dangerous biological materials from being obtained by individuals seeking to misuse increasingly powerful AI systems.

Lead author Steph Guerra said the most catastrophic scenarios have not yet materialized but warned that the window for putting protections in place is narrowing.

Guerra told Axios that “the most dangerous thresholds have not yet been crossed,” while arguing that the pace of AI development demands “mutually reinforcing approaches” to prevent catastrophic misuse.

One of the world’s largest banks is warning that a new global food crisis could be on the horizon as mounting geopolitical tensions and extreme weather threaten to drive food prices sharply higher.

A new report from JPMorgan Chase warns that disruptions to global fertilizer supplies, combined with a potentially historic El Niño weather event, could ignite a fresh wave of food inflation that ripples across the global economy.

The warning comes as conflicts in the Middle East continue to threaten key shipping routes and governments scramble to secure food supplies before shortages worsen.

According to the report, authored by senior global economist Nora Szentivanyi and released on Aug. 15, global food inflation is projected to accelerate from 2.8% during the first half of 2026 to 5% during the first half of 2027.

JPMorgan estimates the surge would add roughly 0.6 percentage points to headline inflation worldwide, undermining efforts by central banks to bring rising prices under control.

Fertilizer Supply Under Threat

JPMorgan identifies what it calls the “Five Ws” driving the emerging crisis: War, Weather, Warehousing, Water, and Waste.

The bank warns that one of the greatest vulnerabilities lies in the global fertilizer supply chain.

The Middle East is a major supplier of potash and urea, two critical agricultural fertilizers.

Any prolonged disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could send fertilizer prices soaring, increasing costs for farmers while reducing crop yields in future harvests.

Szentivanyi warned that today’s geopolitical instability could dramatically amplify the impact of a powerful El Niño event.

According to the report, the combination of energy shocks and extreme weather could more than double the historical inflationary impact of a super El Niño.

JPMorgan estimates global food prices could rise by approximately 1.5 percentage points under such a scenario, compared with the historical average increase of about 0.7 percentage points.

The greatest impact is expected to fall on rice, sugar and coffee production across South and Southeast Asia, cocoa production in West Africa, and agriculture across parts of East and Southern Africa.

China Moves to Protect Grain Supplies

As concerns mount, Chinese authorities have already begun intervening in agricultural markets.

Jiangxi and Hunan provinces activated minimum purchase price programs for early indica rice on Aug. 5.

Henan province followed on Aug. 11 by introducing similar support measures for wheat.

OpenAI has been forced to hit the brakes on development of its most advanced artificial intelligence systems after researchers uncovered alarming behavior that could open “unprecedented new pathways to severe harm.”

The ChatGPT maker announced the move in a troubling new blog post.

The company says it has temporarily reduced the pace of training and release for new models while it overhauls its safety and security protocols.

The decision follows two major warning signs.

One involved an OpenAI agent that escaped its training sandbox without the company realizing it and coordinated with other agents to launch a cyberattack against the AI repository Hugging Face in an effort to manipulate its own training tests.

The second involved an unreleased model called Astra.

OpenAI says Astra may have crossed a critical cybersecurity threshold under the company’s internal safety framework.

AI Researchers Warn of ‘Severe Harm’

OpenAI said “preliminary evidence” suggests Astra may meet the “critical cybersecurity capability threshold” defined in its Preparedness Framework.

That framework requires the company to slow development when a model “could introduce unprecedented new pathways to severe harm.”

OpenAI said the discovery was serious enough to justify pausing reinforcement training for Astra models for two weeks while future training plans remain frozen.

The company is also rewriting the Preparedness Framework itself to account for dangerous new behaviors emerging from increasingly powerful AI systems.

“As models become more capable, the risks associated with developing and testing them internally also grow,” OpenAI said in its announcement.

“Our standards for monitoring, alignment, and security must stay ahead of those risks.

“We wanted to take the time necessary to meet those standards, so we temporarily slowed the pace of scaling.”

Safety Chief Says OpenAI Is ‘Very Far’ from Normal

OpenAI safety lead Mia Glaese made clear that the slowdown is not a minor delay.

Speaking to Sources News, Glaese said the company is “very far from everything running back to normal.”

That admission underscores how seriously OpenAI is treating the latest developments.

The company is now investing heavily in new safety systems before allowing Astra development to resume.

AI Agents Escaped Controls Without Companies Knowing

The OpenAI incident has also exposed a broader problem across the AI industry.

Australia’s sweeping ban on social media for children under 16 is struggling to keep young users off major platforms, with new data showing usage has rebounded to near pre-ban levels just months after the restrictions took effect.

The policy, introduced under globalist Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, was billed as a groundbreaking effort to prevent children and younger teenagers from accessing major social media platforms.

But data from parental-control software company Qustodio indicates that an initial decline following the ban in December 2025 quickly began reversing as young Australians returned to apps including TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat.

Among children between 13 and 15, 26% were using TikTok as of last month, just one percentage point below the level recorded before the restrictions took effect.

TikTok usage among children between 10 and 12 is now higher than it was before the ban, according to Qustodio.

Initial Drop Quickly Reversed

Qustodio found a noticeable decline in social media use among both 10-to-12-year-olds and 13-to-15-year-olds immediately after the restrictions were introduced.

That effect lasted only several weeks.

“What Qustodio found across Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat use, there was a distinct drop in use among 10-12-year-olds and 13-15-year-olds for a few weeks right when the ban started in December 2025,” Business Insider reported.

“But after a few months, kids steadily got back on, nearing or matching pre-ban levels.”

Data from Australia’s own eSafety Commission similarly indicates that the legislation has produced a relatively modest reduction in overall social media use.

The percentage of children between 10 and 15 using social media applications declined from 86% before the restrictions to approximately 81% afterward.

The figures raise questions about whether age-verification systems can effectively prevent determined young users from accessing platforms they want to use.

“In the end, kids want access because they want to be connected just like the rest of us,” Qustodio’s Yasmin London said.

Albanese Government’s Online Controls Face Scrutiny

The results come as Albanese’s broader approach to regulating Australians online has generated controversy.

His government has also pursued Digital ID policies, while previously pushing legislation aimed at combating online “misinformation.”

Critics have raised concerns that expanding age-verification and digital identity requirements could increase government oversight of Australians’ online activity.

The under-16 social media restrictions have become an important test case because Australia was the first country to implement such a sweeping nationwide approach.

The early results now suggest that keeping teenagers away from popular social networks may prove considerably more difficult than passing legislation requiring platforms to do so.

Bloomberg reported that the findings reinforce existing concerns about both the effectiveness of Australia’s age controls and whether major technology companies can adequately enforce them.

Other Countries Considering Similar Restrictions

Australia’s experience is being closely watched internationally as governments consider their own restrictions on children’s social media use.

Similar measures have either been implemented or proposed in countries including France, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

More than two dozen governments have introduced or are considering comparable measures, according to Bloomberg.

The United Kingdom has blocked Finnish parliamentarian Päivi Räsänen from entering the country after she was convicted of “hate speech” for defending the Bible’s teaching on marriage over 20 years ago, according to Alliance Defending Freedom CEO Kristen Waggoner.

Räsänen, a longtime member of Finland’s Parliament and part of its “Friends of the United Kingdom” group, had been invited to speak at a religious liberty conference in Northern Ireland.

Instead, British authorities barred her from entering the country.

“My friend Päivi Räsänen — a doctor, grandmother, member of Finnish parliament, and devout Christian — was invited to speak at a religious liberty conference this week in Northern Ireland,” Waggoner wrote.

“The UK will not let her enter the country.

“This is due to her recent ‘hate speech’ conviction for writing a church pamphlet, in 2004, on Biblical marriage.”

According to ADF, Räsänen’s Electronic Travel Authorization was approved in June before being abruptly canceled last month.

She then applied for a full visa and personally wrote to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood asking for permission to attend the conference.

She has not received a response.

Waggoner condemned the decision and urged Mahmood to intervene.

“Freedom-loving nations should welcome voices like hers — not uphold the heavy-handed censorship of other nations,” Waggoner said.

“Free speech is not a crime.”

This is the second time in two months that Räsänen has been blocked from traveling through the United Kingdom.

In July, she was reportedly told she could not travel through London Heathrow after attending an ADF conference.

Convicted for Defending Biblical Marriage

Räsänen’s legal battle in Finland lasted seven years.

In March, Finland’s Supreme Court unanimously acquitted her over a 2019 social media post quoting Scripture.

But the court convicted her under the “war crimes and crimes against humanity” section of Finland’s criminal code over a church booklet she co-authored in 2004 with Lutheran Bishop Juhana Pohjola.

The booklet defended the biblical definition of marriage more than a decade before Finland legalized same-sex marriage.

Räsänen was fined €1,800, while the foundation that published the booklet was fined €5,000.

Two lower courts had previously acquitted her unanimously on all charges.

Pohjola was also found guilty and has likewise been denied entry to the United Kingdom.

Lawyer Warns of ‘Escalating Censorship Crisis’

Lorcán Price, Räsänen’s attorney before the European Court of Human Rights, said the British decision is part of a broader pattern.

“This is not an isolated incident,” Price said.

“The UK has in the last year blocked a number of mainstream conservative individuals, politicians, and now even a member of the Finnish Parliament and a Lutheran bishop, from entering the country.

“This trend is yet another example of the severe and escalating censorship crisis in Great Britain.”

Price also pointed to recent cases involving Christians punished for silent prayer, public preaching, and offering to speak with people.

Räsänen Calls Decision ‘Shocking’

Räsänen said Britain is punishing her for exercising basic freedoms of religion and speech.

“It is shocking that the UK has blocked me, a democratically elected politician in an allied European state, from entering the country,” she said.

“I was convicted of ‘hate speech’ in Finland for peacefully expressing my Christian views.

“In doing so, the UK is punishing me for exercising my fundamental human rights.”

Räsänen called on Mahmood to reverse the decision before the conference.

“There is still time for this censorship to be reversed,” she said.

The case now adds Britain to the growing list of Western governments accused of using “hate speech” laws and immigration powers to punish Christians for expressing traditional beliefs on marriage and sexuality.
