American cities are abandoning Flock Safety’s AI-powered surveillance cameras at a rapidly accelerating pace as concerns grow over privacy, government surveillance, and the potential abuse of a nationwide network capable of tracking motorists.

An average of three local governments per day terminated their Flock contracts through August, according to research from California-based advocacy organization Secure Justice.

Since 2021, 214 cities and counties have ended their agreements with the surveillance company.

Ninety of those cancellations occurred in August alone.

That represents a fourfold increase from July.

The mounting backlash comes as prominent Republicans, including Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, raise alarms about the technology and its potential for abuse.

Hawley Launches Investigation Into Flock

Flock’s automated license plate readers photograph vehicles and allow authorities to search information collected through networks of connected cameras.

As those networks have expanded, so has scrutiny over who can access the information, how long it is retained, and how it can be used.

Hawley announced last week that he is “investigating Flock Safety’s collection, retention, and dissemination of the data generated by its artificial intelligence surveillance cameras.”

Americans do not surrender their privacy rights when they drive to work, drop their kids off at school, or go to church.

DeSantis also sounded the alarm after two Florida police officers were arrested for allegedly misusing the system.

The Republican governor said Flock’s cameras had become “out of control” in Florida.

“When I see, like, a police officer using this to track, like, an ex-girlfriend, I’m like, you know what the hell’s going on?” DeSantis said.

The controversy underscores one of the central concerns surrounding mass surveillance technology: Systems introduced as tools for catching criminals can also provide government employees with extraordinary capabilities to track ordinary Americans.

AI makes those capabilities significantly more powerful.

Critics Warn of ‘Mass Surveillance Dragnet’

Jake Laperruque, deputy director of the Center for Democracy and Technology’s Security and Surveillance Project, warned that artificial intelligence is transforming traditional license plate readers into something far more expansive.

“Maybe in the past it didn’t feel like every red light cam really meant a pair of eyes was watching you, but with AI, that’s increasingly becoming the reality,” Laperruque said.

“And we’re already seeing how AI can morph ALPRs [automated license plate readers] into a mass surveillance dragnet.”

Laperruque pointed to systems that allow cameras to be searched using keywords and descriptions, the incorporation of real-time facial recognition into municipal camera networks, and Border Patrol’s use of AI to analyze license-plate data for driving patterns.

He said motorists can potentially be stopped after AI systems determine that their behavior is “suspicious.”

The rapid expansion of such capabilities has fueled questions about how far government surveillance should extend when Americans have not been accused of committing any crime.

Flock Pushes Back as Cities Walk Away

Flock maintains that the wave of cancellations does not reflect the company’s broader growth.

“So far in 2026, new city partnerships have outpaced nonrenewals by approximately 10 to one,” company spokesperson Courtney Terlecki said.

“That does not mean every community will make the same decision, and we understand that public safety technology deserves thoughtful public discussion and community engagement.”

The company has also changed its data-retention policies amid the growing scrutiny.

Flock says its terms prohibit customers from using its technology to “mislead, harass, stalk, or otherwise impose upon or violate the legal rights of another person.”

But those safeguards have not stopped communities from reconsidering whether the technology should be deployed in the first place.

The issue is increasingly cutting across traditional political lines, with civil-liberties advocates joining conservatives concerned about government overreach in questioning whether a vast network capable of recording and analyzing Americans’ movements has gone too far.

With 90 local governments walking away from Flock in a single month, four times July’s total, that debate is no longer theoretical.

Cities across America are beginning to decide that the surveillance cameras simply are not worth the risk.

At least 100 girls aged 11 or younger were flagged as suspected victims of forced marriage in Britain over a five-year period, including 27 children who were under the age of five, according to government data obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

The disturbing figures cover referrals made to the British government’s Forced Marriage Unit between 2021 and 2025 and include cases reported by relatives, friends, police officers, teachers, and social services.

Campaigners warn that the official figures may represent only a fraction of the true scale of the problem because many cases are never reported to authorities.

The revelations are fueling renewed scrutiny of Britain’s failure to eradicate forced marriage and a political fight over the role that years of mass immigration have played in importing cultural practices fundamentally incompatible with Western values.

27 Suspected Victims Were Under Five

The Forced Marriage Unit received information concerning at least 100 girls aged 11 or younger who were believed to have been forced into marriage between 2021 and 2025, according to figures disclosed by the Home Office.

Twenty-seven of the children were under five.

Forced-marriage campaigner Dame Jasvinder Sanghera, who fled a forced marriage herself at 14, described the ages involved as “deeply disturbing.”

Sanghera has previously warned that some children can be promised to future husbands from birth.

The official statistics capture cases that came to the attention of authorities.

They cannot account for children whose circumstances were never reported.

RAIR Foundation argues that the figures represent “just the tip of the iceberg” and ties the problem directly to mass migration and Islamic forced-marriage practices.

The British government, however, maintains that forced marriage crosses religious and cultural boundaries.

A government official said forced marriage is “not a problem specific to one country, religion or culture; there is no archetypal victim or perpetrator, and no two cases are the same.”

“Sleepwalking Through This Nightmare”

The issue has provoked outrage among human rights campaigners and decent-minded British citizens.

During an appearance on GB News, journalist Khadija Khan warned that the figure of 40% of forced marriage cases in the UK involving children is “likely just the tip of the iceberg.”

“We can no longer pretend that we have been sleepwalking through this nightmare,” Khan asserted.

In a separate GB News interview, Dr. Taj Hargey, the founder of the Oxford Institute for British Islam, argued that the British public is being prevented from demanding action due to the nation’s so-called “anti-hate” laws.

Such crimes should be “condemned without fear of upsetting anyone,” he told GB News.

“This should be totally condemned by the Muslim society up and down the UK,” Hargey added.

Reform UK Links Rise to Mass Immigration

Reform UK Home Affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf pointed directly to Britain’s unprecedented immigration levels when addressing the increase in forced-marriage cases.

“This sudden rise in forced marriages tracks almost perfectly with the Boriswave, which saw the Tories import four million new people into the U.K.,” Yusuf said.

The “Boriswave” refers to the massive increase in legal immigration following post-Brexit reforms introduced under former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative government.

RAIR Foundation similarly argued that the rise cannot be separated from Britain’s mass-migration policies.

Political commentator Collin Rugg warned that fear of being branded racist could also discourage people from reporting suspected abuse.

“U.K. residents are worried about reporting child marriages for fear of being accused of ‘racism,’ as children under 5 are reportedly being forced into marriage,” Rugg said.

“Some U.K. leaders are concerned that five-year-olds will return from school break married or engaged,” Rugg continued.

“According to Home Office data, forced marriages in the U.K. are on the rise.

“Some children have been promised to older men from birth, according to charity founder Dame Jasvinder Sanghera.”

Forced Marriage Is a Crime in Britain

Forcing someone into marriage is illegal in the United Kingdom, with additional protections applying to children.

Yet the latest government figures show authorities are still encountering suspected victims at extraordinarily young ages.

UNICEF data shows that South Asia contains some of the world’s largest populations of child brides, with India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan among the countries accounting for enormous numbers of cases. Sub-Saharan Africa also has a significant prevalence of child marriage.

The newly disclosed British figures do not establish the religion, ethnicity, immigration status, or national origin of each of the 100 suspected victims.

What they do establish is alarming enough: British authorities received forced-marriage referrals involving at least 100 girls who had not even reached their 12th birthdays in just five years.

Twenty-seven were not even five years old.

And because those numbers include only cases that reached the attention of the Forced Marriage Unit, campaigners warn the true number of vulnerable children caught in the practice could be considerably higher.

The death certificate of a 26-year-old man who was euthanized by the Canadian government, despite being described by his doctor as “young and healthy,” has been released, revealing disturbing details about his final hours.

Ontario resident Kiano Vafaeian died under Canada’s taxpayer-funded Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program on December 30, 2025.

A copy of Vafaeian’s death certificate has now been obtained by author and anti-euthanasia activist Kelsi Sheren, revealing alarming new details about his “assisted suicide.”

Documents concerning Vafaeian’s death show that drugs used in the procedure were obtained through a Vancouver pharmacy before the euthanasia was carried out at a funeral home.

His mother, Margaret Marsilla, has fiercely opposed the decision to approve her son for MAiD.

After his death, Marsilla accused the doctor who approved the procedure of finding a “loophole” that allowed her son to be euthanized.

That doctor was prominent Canadian MAiD practitioner Dr. Ellen Wiebe.

Vafaeian traveled across the country to Vancouver, where Wiebe administered the lethal procedure.

Death Certificate Lists ‘MAiD’ as Cause of Death

Wiebe is a member of the Clinicians’ Advisory Council for the euthanasia advocacy organization Dying with Dignity Canada and a professor at the University of British Columbia.

She has become one of Canada’s most prominent practitioners of MAiD.

Right to Life UK reported in 2023 that Wiebe had administered MAiD to more than 400 patients.

In footage obtained by The New Atlantis, Wiebe described performing euthanasia as “the most rewarding work we’ve ever done.”

Before his death in December, Vafaeian filled several prescriptions at Macdonald’s Prescriptions Ltd. in Vancouver.

The drugs were subsequently used during his assisted death.

The prescriptions reportedly included “Midazolam injection, Propofol injection, Rocuronium bromide injection, Bupivacaine injection, a line item labeled ‘1 MAID’.”

The medications have conventional medical purposes but can be combined as part of Canada’s MAiD protocol.

“Midazolam is used to sedate,” Sheren explained.

“Propofol induces deep anesthesia.

“Rocuronium causes paralysis and respiratory arrest.

“Bupivacaine may be used in certain protocols.”

Vafaeian reportedly paid hundreds of dollars for the medications.

The documents therefore offer a stark look at the mechanics of Canada’s euthanasia system, where drugs involved in assisted deaths can be prescribed and dispensed through the pharmaceutical system.

But another detail revealed by the records is even more striking.

Vafaeian did not die in a hospital or Wiebe’s medical office.

He was euthanized at Koru Cremation, a funeral home in Vancouver.

He reportedly paid approximately $300 to $495 to use the facility.

His death certificate lists the cause of death simply as “MAiD.”

It also records underlying conditions including blindness and diabetes.

Mother Had Previously Fought to Keep Son Alive

Vafaeian’s case had already attracted national attention years before his death.

In 2022, when he was just 23 years old, Vafaeian sought to end his life through MAiD.

At the time, he had diabetes and had lost sight in one eye.

According to reporting by the Free Press, the young man was struggling with his circumstances and had no job, girlfriend, or clear plans for his future.

Marsilla said her son was deeply unhappy.

She said losing his vision in one eye in April 2022 became a tipping point that led him to pursue euthanasia.

Vafaeian had been scheduled to undergo MAiD through Dr. Joshua Tepper, executive director of Toronto-based MAiDHouse.

However, the planned procedure was canceled following intense media attention surrounding the case.

Vafaeian survived for another three years.

By the end of 2025, however, he had found another path into Canada’s euthanasia system.

He traveled from Ontario to British Columbia, where Wiebe ultimately administered MAiD.

His mother has said her son was approved on grounds involving “mental illness.”

The newly released death certificate now provides a chilling final record of what followed.

A 26-year-old man crossed Canada, obtained the drugs used in his assisted death through a pharmacy, and was euthanized by a taxpayer-funded doctor inside a funeral home.

And on the government document recording how his life ended, the cause of death is written plainly:

“MAiD.”

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) warned that the massive surge in artificial intelligence investment could end in a stock market crash and recession if the technology fails to deliver returns large enough to justify the spending.

The Switzerland-based institution, which serves as a coordinating body for central banks around the world, issued the warning in its annual report.

The BIS said intense competition among leading AI companies may have driven investment to excessive levels.

That could leave the sector vulnerable if revenue and productivity gains fall short of expectations.

“The race to capture market share may have led to overinvestment,” BIS General Manager Pablo Hernández de Cos said.

“This could leave the sector more vulnerable if AI underdelivers, possibly bringing the current investment boom to an abrupt end,” he added.

AI Spending Expected to Top $1 Trillion

The warning comes as the world’s largest technology companies pour enormous sums into AI infrastructure.

The five largest hyperscalers are expected to spend more than $1 trillion on AI-related capital expenditures in 2025 and 2026, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Those investments include data centers, chips, cloud infrastructure, power systems, and other hardware needed to train and run advanced AI models.

The BIS compared the current AI spending surge to previous technology booms that ended in severe downturns.

The report cited canal construction in the 1830s, British railways in the 1840s, electrification in the late 1920s, and the dot-com boom of the late 1990s.

Each of those investment manias eventually reversed and triggered broader economic damage.

The BIS warned that a major correction in AI-linked stocks could have especially serious consequences today.

Households now have greater exposure to equities relative to total wealth and income than in past decades.

That means a sharp drop in valuations could hit consumer spending harder than previous market downturns of similar size.

Debt-Fueled AI Boom Raises New Risks

The report also raised concerns about how the AI boom is being financed.

Early AI development was largely funded internally by major technology companies.

However, investment plans have grown so large that companies are increasingly relying on debt and complex financing structures.

The BIS warned about so-called circular financing arrangements that combine equity, debt, and supplier-client contracts.

Such deals can involve chipmakers and hyperscalers investing in AI labs that then commit to long-term purchases of chips or computing power.

The terms of those arrangements are often poorly disclosed, the BIS said.

The report warned that the same asset could potentially be pledged multiple times, creating hidden risks across the system.

If hyperscalers slow their capital spending, companies across the AI supply chain could struggle to service their debt, the BIS warned.

That could turn a slowdown in AI investment into a broader financial problem.

Central Banks Urged to Watch Carefully

Hernández de Cos declined to prescribe a specific central bank response to the AI investment surge.

According to CNBC, he indicated that any attempt to dictate a firm policy course at this stage would be ill-advised.

The BIS warning adds to growing concern that Wall Street’s AI enthusiasm may be running ahead of the technology’s near-term economic value.

Supporters argue that AI will transform productivity, automate major parts of the economy, and justify the enormous infrastructure spending now underway.

Skeptics warn that the sector is being priced for perfection before companies have proven that AI can generate profits at the scale investors expect.

The BIS is not saying the AI boom will necessarily collapse.

But BIS is warning that if the spending surge fails to produce the promised returns, the fallout may not stay contained inside Silicon Valley.

The European Central Bank (ECB) is warning that the artificial intelligence (AI) investment boom is heading for a brutal market correction with unprecedented global consequences.

In a new analysis published this week and first reported by Reuters, ECB economists warned that soaring AI valuations are unlikely to continue indefinitely and that a pullback could hammer markets far beyond Silicon Valley.

The report examined whether the AI boom is being driven by rational expectations about a transformational technology or by investors getting swept up in hype.

Either way, the conclusion was the same: the boom ends in a correction.

AI Valuations Are Built on Extreme Expectations

The ECB analysis outlined what it called the “rational view,” under which investors are placing enormous bets on AI because the potential upside is so large.

The authors pointed to the explosive rise of companies such as Nvidia, which surged to a $5 trillion valuation last year amid expectations that AI could deliver a massive leap in productivity.

“In the worst case in such a scenario, investors lose their investment,” the authors wrote.

“But in the best case, the gains are large and genuinely hard to bound.

“This ‘option value’ increases the stock valuations of early adopters, causing their price-to-earnings ratios to rise sharply.”

In other words, investors are paying enormous premiums today for the chance that AI eventually delivers something revolutionary.

ECB Warns Investors May Be Drunk on AI Hype

The second explanation is far more concerning.

Under what the authors called the “behavioral view,” investors have become “overconfident” and “overoptimistic,” chasing AI valuations because everyone else is doing the same.

That kind of speculative frenzy can end violently once confidence breaks.

When enthusiasm for a new technology fades, the authors warned, market losses can become swift and severe.

The current AI boom may involve both dynamics at once: genuine technological potential combined with runaway speculation.

But the ECB said both scenarios point toward the same eventual outcome.

The two views “imply a boom followed by a correction, or a pullback from wherever valuations have risen, at some point in the future,” the authors wrote.

Europe Could Get Dragged Down with Wall Street

The biggest warning in the report concerns what happens after the correction begins.

The ECB economists said the initial trigger would likely come from U.S. markets, but the fallout would spread rapidly into Europe because European investors are heavily exposed to American technology stocks.

European “households, insurers and pension funds have significant exposures through global index trackers,” the analysis states.

That means a major selloff in U.S. AI stocks would immediately hit European retirement funds, insurers and household investments.

And the damage would not stop with stock prices.

“The effects of a US correction could extend beyond financial markets to euro area sentiment, financing conditions and hiring,” the experts wrote.

“A US AI fallout would not remain a US problem.”

AI Bubble Risks Are Becoming Harder to Ignore

The warning comes as the AI industry continues pouring staggering sums into chips, data centers and infrastructure while investors price in enormous future profits.

The problem is that much of the market’s value still depends on AI eventually delivering productivity gains large enough to justify those investments.

If that promise falls short, valuations built on years of hype could unravel quickly.

The ECB is now warning that such a correction would not simply wipe billions from Silicon Valley balance sheets.

It could hit pensions, investment funds, hiring and credit conditions across Europe, turning an American AI bubble into a global financial shock.

European Union bureaucrats are setting their sights on seizing control of a staggering $10 trillion in private household savings as Brussels scrambles to finance its sprawling climate, defense, and globalist agenda.

The unelected European Commission is pushing ahead with its so-called “Savings and Investments Union,” a scheme designed to redirect vast sums currently sitting in Europeans’ bank accounts toward investments favored by the bloc.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has now declared that Brussels wants to take control of these funds to “put these savings to work.”

In a speech before business elites in France, von der Leyen called on fellow eurocrats to “unlock” the general public’s savings and “reinvest” the funds in the globalist agenda.

While the current proposal does not yet authorize the EU to simply confiscate citizens’ bank balances, the push has ignited fears that the move will inevitably lead to Brussels seizing the general public’s savings.

The calls come as EU governments struggle under mounting debt and enormous spending commitments.

Brussels Targets Europeans’ Private Wealth

The European Commission says Europe requires hundreds of billions of euros in additional investment every year to pursue its strategic objectives.

According to the Commission, the bloc faces massive funding demands from climate policies, technological development, geopolitical upheaval, and increased defense spending.

The Draghi report estimates that Europe needs an additional €750 billion to €800 billion every year by 2030.

Rather than relying exclusively on government spending or traditional bank financing, Brussels wants to channel more private capital into those priorities.

The European Council estimates that approximately €10 trillion of household savings is currently sitting in low-yield bank deposits.

“This mismatch prevents savings from being used effectively to support business investments and the broader real economy,” the Council states.

Plans under consideration include tax incentives, investment accounts, changes to securitization rules, regulatory reforms, and increasingly integrated financial supervision.

The objective is clear: persuade Europeans to move enormous amounts of privately held money out of ordinary bank deposits and into capital markets aligned with Brussels’ investment priorities.

Von der Leyen, the EU’s unelected leader, spelled out that ambition while addressing French business leaders in Paris on August 27.

“€10 trillion of household savings is currently sitting in bank deposits, and a significant part of European savings is invested outside our continent,” von der Leyen said.

“Europe must now put these savings to work for its companies, and that is the goal of the Savings and Investment Union.”

“We have put proposals on the table on securitisation, bank and insurance investments, the integration of our markets and their supervision.”

“Together, they can unlock up to €470 billion in additional investment.”

EU Needs Hundreds of Billions Every Year

Brussels’ hunt for private capital comes as European governments struggle under enormous debt burdens while simultaneously pursuing hugely expensive climate, industrial, infrastructure, digital, and defense policies.

The Draghi report estimates that the EU needs another €750 billion to €800 billion annually to meet those ambitions.

That amounts to approximately 4.4% to 4.7% of Europe’s annual GDP.

Meanwhile, public debt reached 82.9% of EU GDP during the first quarter of 2026 and 88.9% across the eurozone.

Some of Europe’s largest economies are carrying even greater burdens.

France’s debt stood at 117.6% of GDP, while Italy reached 138.9% and Greece 143.5%.

Against that backdrop, the enormous pool of private wealth sitting in Europeans’ bank accounts has become increasingly attractive to Brussels.

The European Commission insists the Savings and Investments Union would benefit citizens and businesses by creating deeper capital markets and potentially generating higher returns for savers.

But the initiative also gives EU policymakers an obvious route toward mobilizing private wealth when governments cannot finance Brussels’ ambitions through public spending alone.

‘More Integration, More Common Supervision’

The project is not entirely new.

The Savings and Investments Union is effectively the successor to the Capital Markets Union launched in 2015.

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde acknowledged in 2024 that dozens of regulatory and non-legislative initiatives had already been proposed as part of that earlier effort.

Yet European officials concluded that the project had failed to produce the deep, integrated capital markets they wanted.

Brussels’ answer is now another push toward deeper financial integration and common supervision.

The European Conservative noted that the revived initiative amounts to “more integration, more common supervision, and another regulatory package.”

The enormous financial ambitions are unfolding alongside a broader transformation of the global monetary system.

The Bank for International Settlements has been promoting the development of “tokenised unified ledgers” incorporating central bank money, commercial bank deposits, and government bonds.

“Tokenisation – the digital representation of assets on programmable platforms – integrates messaging, reconciliation and settlement into a single seamless operation, and can transform cross-border payments and securities markets, ushering in a new era for the financial system,” the BIS states.

The concept is separate from the EU’s Savings and Investments Union, but both developments highlight the accelerating effort by governments and financial institutions to reshape how private capital moves through increasingly integrated financial systems.

Central Banks Prepare for AI Financial Disruption

The transformation is not limited to Europe.

Global central bankers gathering at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City’s Jackson Hole symposium recently confronted another emerging threat to the existing financial order: artificial intelligence.

Princeton University economist Markus Brunnermeier outlined scenarios in which AI-powered trading systems could operate so rapidly that central banks might be forced to fundamentally change how monetary policy is communicated and implemented.

Among the possibilities discussed were central banks becoming deliberately less predictable to prevent AI systems from gaming monetary policy and governments intervening more directly in credit markets to counter machine-driven manipulation.

Taken together, the developments point toward an increasingly centralized and technologically sophisticated financial architecture.

For Europeans, however, the immediate issue is much simpler.

Brussels has identified an enormous pool of private wealth that it believes isn’t being put to sufficient use.

That pool belongs to ordinary households.

And EU leaders have now openly declared that they want to put roughly €10 trillion of those savings “to work” advancing Europe’s investment priorities.

Icelandic voters rejected a proposal to reopen membership negotiations with the European Union, delivering a setback to Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir and globalist supporters of deeper integration with Brussels.

Final results from Saturday’s national referendum showed 52.84% voting against renewed accession talks and 47.16% supporting them.

A total of 118,040 voters opposed reopening negotiations, while 105,339 voted in favor.

Turnout was extraordinarily high at 82.52%, with 225,031 of Iceland’s 272,690 registered voters participating.

The referendum did not ask Icelanders to approve EU membership outright.

A “Yes” vote would merely have authorized the government to reopen accession negotiations that were suspended more than a decade ago.

Any eventual agreement to join the European Union would still have required approval in another national referendum.

Icelanders Reject Return to Brussels Negotiations

Iceland initially applied to join the EU in July 2009 following the country’s devastating financial crisis.

Formal accession negotiations began the following year.

But the talks were suspended in 2013 after a new government took power and pledged that negotiations would not restart without approval from Icelandic voters.

The issue returned following the 2024 parliamentary election.

A governing coalition led by Frostadóttir’s Social Democratic Alliance, together with Viðreisn and the People’s Party, agreed to hold a referendum on reopening negotiations no later than 2027.

Saturday’s vote ultimately produced a clear rejection.

Frostadóttir, who campaigned in favor of renewed negotiations, said her government would respect the result and would not reopen accession talks during its current term, which runs through 2028.

She also described the high turnout as a positive demonstration of democratic participation.

Iceland voted against resuming talks to join the EU in a national referendum, with 52.8% voting against the proposal and 47.2% voting in favor.

Fisheries and Sovereignty Dominate Debate

The referendum campaign centered heavily on Iceland’s fishing industry and concerns about national sovereignty.

Iceland already participates in the EU single market through the European Economic Area and belongs to the Schengen Area.

Supporters of renewed talks argued that full EU membership would give Iceland voting power over regulations it currently implements through the EEA without having a formal seat at the table.

They also argued that eventually adopting the euro could reduce volatility surrounding Iceland’s currency and interest rates.

Opponents focused heavily on the potential consequences for fishing and agriculture.

EU membership could bring Iceland under the Common Fisheries Policy and other European frameworks that would affect control over fishing quotas and agricultural policy.

That concern carries particular weight in Iceland, where fisheries account for a major share of exports and remain deeply tied to the country’s political identity.

Approximately 90% of fishing-related businesses opposed EU membership.

Iceland’s history of fiercely defending its fishing rights includes the Cod Wars against Britain between the 1950s and 1970s.

Government Says Existing EEA Relationship Has Support

Following the referendum, Frostadóttir said the result suggested many Icelanders remain satisfied with the country’s existing relationship with Europe through the EEA.

That arrangement gives Iceland access to much of the EU single market without requiring full membership in the bloc.

The government said parliament will now consider whether to formally withdraw Iceland’s 2009 EU membership application altogether.

For now, however, the immediate question has been settled.

After years of renewed debate over whether Iceland should move closer to Brussels, voters chose to keep accession negotiations closed.

More than two dozen federal agencies are overseeing billions of dollars in U.S. assistance to Ukraine as a widening series of corruption investigations puts renewed scrutiny on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s government.

The United States committed $67.8 billion in defense articles and services to Ukraine between February 2022 and March 2026 through programs including the Presidential Drawdown Authority, Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, and Foreign Military Financing.

That military assistance forms part of approximately $195 billion appropriated for Operation Atlantic Resolve, a broader figure that also includes replenishing U.S. weapons inventories, American military operations in Europe, and economic, development, and humanitarian assistance.

The enormous sums have made oversight a major concern as Ukraine continues confronting corruption and several senior figures in and around Zelenskyy’s government face investigations, dismissals, or resignations.

“Of course, in all of the former Soviet Union countries, there is significant corruption,” former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Carrie Filipetti, now executive director of the Vandenberg Coalition, said.

“A lot more work needs to be done. But we know, at least on the U.S. side, as we’re providing support for their military, we have a lot of mechanisms.”

More Than Two Dozen Federal Agencies Monitoring U.S. Aid

Filipetti said Washington has built extensive safeguards around American assistance to prevent taxpayer money and military equipment from being swallowed up by corruption.

“Over 24 federal agencies are involved in oversight,” Filipetti said.

“To make certain that there are no consequences to the U.S. taxpayer, [or] to our equipment in terms of the corruption issue, U.S. contributions are very much protected.”

The safeguards have taken on additional significance as anti-corruption investigations have reached increasingly close to Zelenskyy’s administration.

Zelenskyy dismissed Iryna Mudra, a deputy head of the presidential office, on August 19 while investigators pursued a money-laundering case involving another deputy head of the office.

Investigators have not named Mudra as a suspect.

The shakeup followed the November 2025 resignation of Zelenskyy’s powerful chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, after anti-corruption investigators searched his premises.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna was dismissed as Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States on August 3, two days before she was served with a suspicion notice.

Zelenskyy also fired Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov on July 15 during a broader wartime reshuffle that triggered protests.

After leaving the government, Fedorov publicly complained about entrenched corruption and patronage networks within Ukraine.

Filipetti argued that the investigations demonstrate Ukraine’s independent anti-corruption institutions are functioning and that Zelenskyy has acted when allegations emerge.

“We’ve seen that Zelenskyy is taking really seriously the criticisms of corruption, and every time there is an allegation, he moves very swiftly to remove those individuals from the government,” she said.

“And the fact that there are these independent bodies is, I think, really important.

“They’re listening to them.

“They’re making sure that they’re trying to root it out as much as humanly possible.”

Zelenskyy Denies Personal Involvement

Zelenskyy has rejected suggestions that the expanding investigations implicate him personally.

“The heads of anti-corruption agencies have zero questions for me,” Zelenskyy said in remarks published August 23.

“They understand perfectly well that I am not involved in anything like that.”

Questions surrounding oversight of American assistance are not new.

A February 2024 USAID inspector general review found the agency had failed to independently verify some salary claims involving Ukrainian health workers before reimbursing them.

Filipetti said U.S. economic assistance is now structured to provide additional protection through reimbursement mechanisms.

“A lot of what the United States has been providing, we’re making sure that everything is through a reimbursement mechanism,” she said.

Filipetti maintained that American assistance has not been linked to the current money-laundering allegations.

Ukraine Seeks Hundreds More Patriot Interceptors

The corruption scrutiny comes as Ukraine simultaneously presses its allies for additional weapons amid intensified Russian attacks.

Kyiv is facing shortages of Patriot interceptor missiles, with Zelenskyy seeking another 300 interceptors ahead of winter and Ukraine’s air force requesting 360.

“One of the most urgent needs that the Ukrainians have right now is interceptor missiles,” Filipetti said.

“This is why this idea of sending Patriot capabilities and allowing them to produce them on the ground in Ukraine has become so important to Zelenskyy.”

President Donald Trump has made clear that additional weapons transfers must be balanced against America’s own defense requirements.

“We want missiles too,” Trump said on August 6 when questioned about Zelenskyy’s requests for long-range weapons and Patriot systems.

“Biden gave him so much, Biden gave $300 billion worth of ammunition.”

Trump has repeatedly pressed European governments to assume more responsibility for Ukraine’s defense rather than continuing to rely heavily on American resources.

Corruption Remains Obstacle to Ukraine’s NATO Ambitions

Beyond the immediate question of protecting American taxpayer money, Ukraine’s corruption problem could also become critical to its longer-term ambitions to join NATO.

“I think every country has been really adamant that the Ukrainians move forward in their anti-corruption mechanisms,” Filipetti said.

“Obviously, if Ukraine ever wants to be a formal member of NATO, that’s something that they will need to prove and demonstrate.”

Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies are now putting that commitment to a significant test.

With tens of billions of dollars in American military assistance involved, Washington is relying on layers of federal oversight to ensure the consequences of Ukraine’s longstanding corruption problem do not ultimately fall on U.S. taxpayers.

An Ontario court has blocked the Canadian government from euthanizing a healthy Toronto woman living with bipolar disorder with an “emergency access” order for “assisted suicide.”

In May, doctors requested an emergency stay from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice to immediately end actress and comedian Claire Brosseau‘s life with a lethal injection.

Brosseau suffers from bipolar 1 disorder and says she endures “constant pain and unrelenting torment.”

If successful, the emergency court order would have allowed the socialized healthcare system to euthanize Brosseau under Canada’s taxpayer-funded Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Carissima Mathen denied the emergency motion Thursday, meaning doctors cannot currently end Brosseau’s life under MAiD based solely on her psychiatric condition.

However, the ruling only blocks the immediate request for a lethal injection.

Under Canada’s existing timetable, the restriction preventing mentally ill patients from qualifying for MAiD is scheduled to expire in March 2027.

Once that happens, mental illness alone will become sufficient to qualify under the federal MAiD framework, subject to its eligibility requirements.

Court Stops Emergency Push for Euthanasia

Mathen acknowledged evidence concerning the severity of Brosseau’s suffering but also cited major competing considerations.

Those included “Parliament’s role to make policy decisions on sensitive social issues and the proper interpretation of the Charter rights in play.”

Brosseau condemned the decision, according to a statement through the euthanasia advocacy organization Dying With Dignity Canada.

“I am disappointed yet not surprised that my emergency motion was denied,” Brosseau said.

She argued that the ruling merely extends her suffering.

“This is not living – I do not have a life,” she added, according to the statement.

Doctors are currently prohibited from euthanizing Brosseau because bipolar disorder is her sole underlying medical condition.

She is otherwise perfectly healthy.

Dying With Dignity Canada is already fighting to eliminate that barrier.

The organization sued the federal government in August 2024 over its exclusion of patients whose only underlying condition is mental illness.

That legal battle remains active.

Mathen ordered Brosseau and the Attorney-General of Canada to move toward an urgent case conference in the lawsuit within 14 days.

Canada Prepares to Cross Another Euthanasia Line

The case comes as Canada approaches another major expansion of a euthanasia system that has repeatedly widened since it was introduced a decade ago.

MAiD became legal nationwide in June 2016.

At first, the system was restricted to Canadians suffering from serious conditions whose natural deaths were considered “reasonably foreseeable.”

That restriction was subsequently removed for another category of patients.

Canada expanded MAiD in 2021 after a Quebec Superior Court ruling found the original law unconstitutional.

The amended system created “track two” MAiD, allowing qualifying patients with grievous and irremediable conditions to seek medically assisted death even when their natural deaths are not reasonably foreseeable.

The government also established a temporary exclusion for people whose sole underlying medical condition is mental illness.

That exclusion has already been extended twice.

It is now scheduled to end in March 2027.

The change would make psychiatric illness alone eligible for consideration under MAiD rather than requiring an accompanying physical medical condition.

Parliamentary Committee Sounds Alarm

Even members of Canada’s Parliament are warning against allowing the expansion to proceed.

A special parliamentary committee investigating MAiD for mental illness heard evidence of “significant complexities and risks, grave concerns and deep divisions that continue to accompany this issue.”

A majority of the committee recommended that Ottawa amend the Criminal Code and indefinitely exclude people whose sole underlying condition is mental illness.

Joseph Cheng, senior counsel for the Attorney-General of Canada, urged the Ontario Superior Court in July to consider those findings.

Brosseau’s attorney Michael Fenrick objected, arguing that the committee’s conclusions did not represent the will of Parliament and that his client’s application required urgent consideration.

The federal government now faces a decision over whether to allow the March deadline to stand.

Three unidentified sources told The Globe and Mail in May that the government was open to introducing legislation stopping the scheduled expansion.

Justice Minister Sean Fraser later said he was reviewing the parliamentary committee’s findings and dissenting opinions.

From Terminal Illness to Psychiatric Suffering

Canada’s MAiD system has moved far beyond the restrictions imposed when euthanasia was first legalized in 2016.

The original framework centered on people suffering from serious medical conditions whose deaths were considered reasonably foreseeable.

Five years later, Canada opened MAiD to qualifying patients who were not approaching natural death.

Now the country is preparing for the next expansion: allowing mental illness itself to serve as the sole underlying medical condition for a medically assisted death.

Brosseau’s case brings that progression into stark focus.

She is 49 years old.

Her underlying condition is bipolar disorder.

Brosseau’s doctors say her suffering is unbearable and her life should be ended.

For now, Canadian law says they cannot.

But the prohibition keeping Brosseau and other psychiatric patients from being euthanized solely because of mental illness is scheduled to disappear in March 2027.

Unless Ottawa changes the law, Canada’s answer to some patients suffering exclusively from severe mental illness will no longer be limited to treatment, support, and suicide prevention.

Medically assisted death will also be on the table.

Doctors in Canada are renewing a disturbing push for the globalist government to expand the nation’s already rapidly growing “assisted suicide” regime to begin euthanizing newborn babies.

The expansion would allow taxpayer-funded doctors to euthanize infants suffering from disabilities and medical conditions.

The Quebec College of Physicians has reaffirmed its position that so-called “medical assistance in dying” (MAID) should be available to parents seeking to have severely ill newborns euthanized.

The demand comes as Canada’s taxpayer-funded euthanasia system continues to expand, with assisted deaths now accounting for roughly one in every 20 deaths nationwide.

Canada legalized assisted dying in 2016, but eligibility has since been dramatically broadened beyond terminally ill patients.

Now, doctors are pushing the boundary even further by arguing that babies who cannot possibly consent to death should also be eligible.

Doctors Push Euthanasia for Babies

The Quebec College of Physicians first triggered outrage over the proposal in 2022 when Dr. Louis Roy appeared before Parliament’s Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying.

Roy raised the prospect of euthanasia for “babies from birth to one year of age” suffering from severe medical conditions.

He specifically described infants “who are born with severe deformations, very grave and severe medical syndromes, whose life expectancy and level of suffering are such that it would make sense to ensure that they do not suffer.”

The medical organization has now reaffirmed that position.

“The CMQ reiterates that medical assistance in dying may be an appropriate treatment for babies suffering from extreme pain that cannot be relieved and who have severe malformations or serious polysymptomatic syndromes that destroy any prospect of survival,” the Quebec College of Physicians previously told the Daily Mail.

“The CMQ believes that parents should have the opportunity to obtain this care for their infant under these well-defined circumstances.”

The proposal would mark a dramatic departure from Canada’s existing MAID framework because newborn babies cannot consent to being killed.

Parents already have the ability to withdraw or decline extraordinary treatment for babies suffering from devastating medical conditions.

However, euthanasia would involve deliberately administering drugs to accelerate the baby’s death.

The Netherlands already permits euthanasia of newborns in narrowly defined circumstances.

When the proposal emerged in Canada in 2022, then-Liberal Disabilities Minister Carla Qualtrough rejected it outright.

“There is no world where I would accept that,” Qualtrough said.

Canada’s Euthanasia System Keeps Expanding

The renewed push comes amid growing scrutiny of just how deeply euthanasia has become embedded in Canada’s healthcare system.

MAID now accounts for approximately five percent of all deaths in the country, according to The Atlantic.

Canadians no longer need to be terminally ill to qualify.

Canada is also scheduled to extend eligibility to people suffering solely from mental illness, while Parliament has previously recommended considering access for “mature minors.”

Some doctors have already personally euthanized hundreds of people.

Vancouver doctor Ellen Wiebe, a former abortion provider, has euthanized more than 430 patients in nine years.

Another Vancouver doctor, Stefanie Green, told The Atlantic that she refers to her MAID deaths as “deliveries” rather than “provisions,” the terminology commonly used for euthanasia procedures.

According to Li, the cancer carried a 65 percent chance of being cured.

The man rejected treatment and instead demanded euthanasia.

Meanwhile, Toronto physician Sandy Buchman recalled euthanizing a patient who was “all alone” on a mattress on the floor of an otherwise empty rental apartment.

Vulnerable Canadians Euthanized amid ‘Unmet Social Need’

Questions surrounding Canada’s euthanasia regime intensified following a 2024 report from Ontario’s chief coroner.

The review found cases where factors surrounding euthanasia included an “unmet social need.”

An Associated Press investigation also found that doctors and nurses had privately struggled with requests from vulnerable people whose suffering might have been alleviated through financial assistance, social support, or adequate housing.

One case involved an unemployed man in his 40s identified as “Mr A.”

He suffered from bowel disease and had a history of substance abuse and mental illness.

The man was described as “socially vulnerable and isolated.”

Members of an expert committee questioned whether enough had been done to alleviate his suffering before he was euthanized.

Some were also alarmed that a psychiatrist had raised euthanasia during a mental health assessment.

The healthcare professional who ultimately euthanized Mr A reportedly picked him up and drove him to the location where his life was ended.

Committee members warned that the conduct may have “created pressure and gave rise to a perception of hastening a person towards death.”

Another case involved a woman in her 50s identified as “Ms B,” who suffered from multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome and had a history of mental illness, including suicidality and post-traumatic stress disorder.

She was socially isolated and sought euthanasia largely because she could not obtain suitable housing, according to the report.

From Terminal Illness to Euthanizing Newborns

Canada’s euthanasia regime began after the country’s Supreme Court struck down the prohibition on assisted suicide in 2015.

The resulting 2016 legislation permitted euthanasia and assisted suicide for adults suffering from serious medical conditions whose natural deaths were reasonably foreseeable.

Those restrictions did not last.

The law was subsequently expanded to people who are not terminally ill, opening euthanasia to Canadians who could otherwise have decades left to live.

Any qualifying adult with a serious illness, disease, or disability can now seek a medically assisted death.

The system is poised to expand further when eligibility based solely on mental illness takes effect.

Against that backdrop, the renewed demand to euthanize newborn babies represents another extraordinary line Canada’s medical establishment is now openly asking the government to cross.

The Quebec College of Physicians is no longer merely discussing the possibility.

It is publicly reaffirming that deliberately ending the lives of severely disabled and sick babies can constitute “appropriate treatment,” even though those children can never consent to being killed.
