France faces even more devastating violence this weekend as far-left activists, migrants, and criminal groups prepare for more rioting.
Antifa-linked groups are preparing further riots near a convention for France’s right-wing opposition party, National Rally.
It comes days after nationwide riots overwhelmed police and exposed major failures in President Emmanuel Macron’s security operation.
An internal State Department assessment warns that far-left riots near the October 24–25 gathering in Orléans could become “potentially more confrontational” and “expose further security shortcomings and deepen political tensions.”
The warning identifies far-left groups, migrants, and criminals as potential participants in renewed unrest as National Rally leader Marine Le Pen prepares to launch her presidential campaign at the convention.
National Rally President Jordan Bardella has ruled out canceling the congress.
Local authorities are preparing additional security restrictions around the venue.
Far-Left Protests Planned Near Convention
Left-wing parties, unions, and activist groups plan to march Saturday, while Antifa-linked pro-communist groups have announced a separate riot on Sunday near the convention venue, according to the State Department assessment.
The gathering presents an immediate test for French authorities following the October 17 unrest, when intelligence failures left security forces facing more than twice the number of demonstrators they had anticipated.
France’s Interior Ministry reported approximately 550,000 participants across 110 marches nationwide.
More than 2,400 people were arrested, nearly 1,000 law enforcement officers and firefighters were injured, and thousands of businesses were damaged as demonstrations descended into rioting and looting.
The scale of the violence forced an acknowledgment from Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez that police had “lost control” in some major cities.
Nuñez offered his resignation, but Macron rejected it, citing the need to maintain continuity in law enforcement command.
Macron also ordered “full transparency” over the planning and intelligence failures that preceded the violence.
Nuñez has acknowledged that authorities must improve their ability to anticipate large-scale mobilizations.
This weekend’s protests will put those preparations under immediate scrutiny.
Security Failures Put Macron Under Pressure
The State Department assessment says the riots have reshaped France’s political debate six months before voters choose Macron’s successor.
Economic and education grievances initially drove the demonstrations.
However, the Antifa- and migrant-led violence and looting that followed have shifted attention toward public security and government accountability.
They are issues that could give National Rally and center-right parties an opening to challenge Macron’s record.
Authorities now must secure a convention for a party positioned to benefit politically from the government’s handling of the previous unrest.
The pressure will not end with the weekend.
Labor organizations are already preparing nationwide strikes and demonstrations for November 5 over wages, public services, and the proposed 2027 budget, according to the assessment.
Macron faces demands to restore order while addressing protesters’ grievances, with limited fiscal room for concessions as parliament debates next year’s spending.
After a mobilization that overwhelmed police across France, the government faces another confrontation, with its security planning and political credibility on the line.
