Australia’s sweeping ban on social media for children under 16 is struggling to keep young users off major platforms, with new data showing usage has rebounded to near pre-ban levels just months after the restrictions took effect.
The policy, introduced under globalist Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, was billed as a groundbreaking effort to prevent children and younger teenagers from accessing major social media platforms.
But data from parental-control software company Qustodio indicates that an initial decline following the ban in December 2025 quickly began reversing as young Australians returned to apps including TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat.
Among children between 13 and 15, 26% were using TikTok as of last month, just one percentage point below the level recorded before the restrictions took effect.
TikTok usage among children between 10 and 12 is now higher than it was before the ban, according to Qustodio.
Initial Drop Quickly Reversed
Qustodio found a noticeable decline in social media use among both 10-to-12-year-olds and 13-to-15-year-olds immediately after the restrictions were introduced.
That effect lasted only several weeks.
“What Qustodio found across Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat use, there was a distinct drop in use among 10-12-year-olds and 13-15-year-olds for a few weeks right when the ban started in December 2025,” Business Insider reported.
“But after a few months, kids steadily got back on, nearing or matching pre-ban levels.”
Data from Australia’s own eSafety Commission similarly indicates that the legislation has produced a relatively modest reduction in overall social media use.
The percentage of children between 10 and 15 using social media applications declined from 86% before the restrictions to approximately 81% afterward.
The figures raise questions about whether age-verification systems can effectively prevent determined young users from accessing platforms they want to use.
“In the end, kids want access because they want to be connected just like the rest of us,” Qustodio’s Yasmin London said.
Albanese Government’s Online Controls Face Scrutiny
The results come as Albanese’s broader approach to regulating Australians online has generated controversy.
His government has also pursued Digital ID policies, while previously pushing legislation aimed at combating online “misinformation.”
Critics have raised concerns that expanding age-verification and digital identity requirements could increase government oversight of Australians’ online activity.
The under-16 social media restrictions have become an important test case because Australia was the first country to implement such a sweeping nationwide approach.
The early results now suggest that keeping teenagers away from popular social networks may prove considerably more difficult than passing legislation requiring platforms to do so.
Bloomberg reported that the findings reinforce existing concerns about both the effectiveness of Australia’s age controls and whether major technology companies can adequately enforce them.
Other Countries Considering Similar Restrictions
Australia’s experience is being closely watched internationally as governments consider their own restrictions on children’s social media use.
Similar measures have either been implemented or proposed in countries including France, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
More than two dozen governments have introduced or are considering comparable measures, according to Bloomberg.
That makes Australia an important real-world experiment for policymakers considering similar restrictions.
So far, however, the results show that the initial effect of the ban has faded considerably.
Despite one of the world’s most aggressive attempts to keep children off social media, Australian teenagers have steadily returned.
And on some platforms, younger children are now using them at rates equal to or higher than before the ban.

The United Kingdom has blocked Finnish parliamentarian Päivi Räsänen from entering the country after she was convicted of “hate speech” for defending the Bible’s teaching on marriage over 20 years ago, according to Alliance Defending Freedom CEO Kristen Waggoner.
Räsänen, a longtime member of Finland’s Parliament and part of its “Friends of the United Kingdom” group, had been invited to speak at a religious liberty conference in Northern Ireland.
Instead, British authorities barred her from entering the country.
“My friend Päivi Räsänen — a doctor, grandmother, member of Finnish parliament, and devout Christian — was invited to speak at a religious liberty conference this week in Northern Ireland,” Waggoner wrote.
“The UK will not let her enter the country.
“This is due to her recent ‘hate speech’ conviction for writing a church pamphlet, in 2004, on Biblical marriage.”
URGENT: My friend Päivi Räsänen—a doctor, grandmother, member of Finnish parliament, and devout Christian—was invited to speak at a religious liberty conference this week in Northern Ireland.
According to ADF, Räsänen’s Electronic Travel Authorization was approved in June before being abruptly canceled last month.
She then applied for a full visa and personally wrote to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood asking for permission to attend the conference.
She has not received a response.
Waggoner condemned the decision and urged Mahmood to intervene.
“Freedom-loving nations should welcome voices like hers — not uphold the heavy-handed censorship of other nations,” Waggoner said.
“Free speech is not a crime.”
This is the second time in two months that Räsänen has been blocked from traveling through the United Kingdom.
In July, she was reportedly told she could not travel through London Heathrow after attending an ADF conference.
Convicted for Defending Biblical Marriage
Räsänen’s legal battle in Finland lasted seven years.
In March, Finland’s Supreme Court unanimously acquitted her over a 2019 social media post quoting Scripture.
But the court convicted her under the “war crimes and crimes against humanity” section of Finland’s criminal code over a church booklet she co-authored in 2004 with Lutheran Bishop Juhana Pohjola.
The booklet defended the biblical definition of marriage more than a decade before Finland legalized same-sex marriage.
Räsänen was fined €1,800, while the foundation that published the booklet was fined €5,000.
Two lower courts had previously acquitted her unanimously on all charges.
Pohjola was also found guilty and has likewise been denied entry to the United Kingdom.
Lawyer Warns of ‘Escalating Censorship Crisis’
Lorcán Price, Räsänen’s attorney before the European Court of Human Rights, said the British decision is part of a broader pattern.
“The UK has in the last year blocked a number of mainstream conservative individuals, politicians, and now even a member of the Finnish Parliament and a Lutheran bishop, from entering the country.
“This trend is yet another example of the severe and escalating censorship crisis in Great Britain.”
Price also pointed to recent cases involving Christians punished for silent prayer, public preaching, and offering to speak with people.
Räsänen Calls Decision ‘Shocking’
Räsänen said Britain is punishing her for exercising basic freedoms of religion and speech.
“It is shocking that the UK has blocked me, a democratically elected politician in an allied European state, from entering the country,” she said.
“I was convicted of ‘hate speech’ in Finland for peacefully expressing my Christian views.
“In doing so, the UK is punishing me for exercising my fundamental human rights.”
Räsänen called on Mahmood to reverse the decision before the conference.
“There is still time for this censorship to be reversed,” she said.
The case now adds Britain to the growing list of Western governments accused of using “hate speech” laws and immigration powers to punish Christians for expressing traditional beliefs on marriage and sexuality.

The Rape Gang Inquiry, led by survivor Sammy Woodhouse and former MP Rupert Lowe, examined organized groups accused of targeting children across the United Kingdom.
The report argues that predominantly Pakistani Muslim gangs were responsible for a significant portion of the group-based child sexual exploitation cases it examined, while police, social services, and other institutions repeatedly failed victims.
Frontlines TPUSA highlighted the findings in a video released Tuesday, arguing that the scandal should serve as a warning about what happens when institutions fail to confront uncomfortable realities while children remain at risk.
Inquiry Examines Backgrounds of Convicted Offenders
The inquiry found that roughly 87% of convicted offenders in the group-based child sexual exploitation cases it analyzed had “distinctively Muslim names.”
The figure applies specifically to the collection of group-based exploitation cases examined by the inquiry and does not mean Muslims were responsible for 87% of sexual offenses across Britain.
The report argues that authorities failed for years to adequately confront potential cultural and religious factors surrounding some perpetrators.
Its broader conclusions regarding religion and culture have generated controversy and are separate from the findings of Britain’s official government investigations.
The issue of ethnicity, religion, and culture is now expected to receive further examination through Britain’s statutory Independent Inquiry into Grooming Gangs, which was formally launched in April.
Survivor: ‘We Was Going Up Against the Entire System’
Woodhouse, one of Britain’s most prominent grooming gang survivors, has described being sexually exploited as a teenager in Rotherham.
She has accused authorities of possessing extensive information about perpetrators, victims, vehicles, locations, and trafficking methods while failing to intervene effectively to protect children.
In the Frontlines TPUSA video, Woodhouse recalled an encounter with police when she was 15 years old and had been reported missing.
“The police raided a property, and I was half naked in bed with him,” Woodhouse said.
“They actually arrested me and not him.”
Woodhouse said her abuser was allowed to walk free despite authorities possessing extensive information about the gang and its activities.
“We wasn’t just going up against him and his gang,” she said.
“We was going up against the entire system.”
The inquiry argues that such failures extended beyond individual police officers to social services, local authorities, and other institutions responsible for safeguarding vulnerable children.
TPUSA Warns America to Pay Attention
Frontlines TPUSA said the scandal should not be viewed solely as a British problem.
The organization is arguing that the institutional failures exposed by the inquiry carry lessons for the United States.
“This isn’t only Britain’s warning,” Frontlines TPUSA said.
“America should be paying attention.
“When institutions become more afraid of controversy than of failing children, the consequences can be catastrophic.”

Scientists are sounding the alarm over a potentially catastrophic disease pathway involving northward-moving vampire bats and chronic wasting disease (CWD), the fatal neurological illness spreading through deer populations across North America.
Researchers warn that if vampire bats begin feeding on CWD-infected deer and later bite cattle, the animals could become a bridge for dangerous prion diseases to jump species.
That could create a scenario resembling the mad cow crisis, in which contaminated beef ultimately transmitted a fatal neurological disease to humans.
University of Minnesota associate professor Peter Larsen warns that the threat deserves far more attention.
“I don’t know why more people aren’t paying attention to this, because it gets scary really fast,” Larsen said.
Vampire Bats Are Moving North as CWD Spreads South
Vampire bats are nocturnal mammals native to Central and South America that survive exclusively on blood.
They have not yet established populations in the United States, but warming temperatures are pushing their range farther north through Mexico.
At the same time, chronic wasting disease continues spreading south through deer populations.
CWD has now been detected in 37 states.
Larsen said projections indicate the disease could eventually circulate across all of the lower 48 states, every Canadian province, and Mexico by 2030.
Surveillance in Mexico remains limited, but deer transported there from Texas ranches were later linked to facilities found to be CWD-positive.
That has raised fears the disease may already be circulating undetected south of the border.
“If I had to guess, I would say it’s 70 percent possible that there are already vampire bats feeding on [CWD-] positive animals in Mexico,” Larsen told CIDRAP.
Scientists Fear a Deadly Prion Chain Reaction
CWD is caused by malformed proteins known as prions.
These abnormal proteins destroy brain tissue, triggering severe neurological decline, behavioral changes, loss of coordination, and death.
A vampire bat feeding on an infected deer could ingest infectious prions through the animal’s blood.
Larsen said a single blood meal from an infected deer could contain several infectious doses, even before the animal begins showing symptoms.
As CWD progresses, infected deer often become disoriented and less mobile, making them easier targets for blood-feeding bats.
That is especially concerning on fenced ranches, where infected animals have fewer opportunities to move away.
The fear is that a bat exposed to CWD could later feed on cattle and introduce prions into a new species.
Scientists do not yet know whether that transmission would occur, but prion diseases have crossed species barriers before.
Mad Cow Crisis Shows the Danger Is Real
The most notorious example remains the mad cow crisis of the 1980s and 1990s.
Humans who consumed contaminated beef developed variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a fatal neurological disorder caused by prions.
The outbreak killed 178 people, most of them in the United Kingdom.
Researchers have also proposed that CWD itself may have emerged after mule deer housed near sheep were repeatedly exposed to scrapie, another deadly prion disease.
That hypothesis remains unproven, but Larsen warned that species barriers should not be treated as impenetrable.
“I don’t think the species barrier is absolute. I think it’s porous,” Larsen said.
“I think it’s likely that CWD will cause prion disease in other species, including humans, and that it’s just a matter of time.”
Experts Warn the Threat Could Grow Fast
There is currently no evidence that vampire bats transmit CWD, that cattle have contracted the disease from deer, or that CWD has infected humans.
But the geographic trends are moving in the wrong direction.
CWD is spreading through more deer populations while vampire bats continue moving north.
That means the two threats are getting closer to overlapping.
Larsen warned that if infected deer and vampire bats are already interacting in Mexico, the conditions for a dangerous species-jump experiment may already exist in the wild.
Former Montana state veterinarian Martin Zaluski said the chain of transmission remains unlikely and stressed that prion diseases generally stay confined to individual species.
Even so, the mad cow crisis proved that once a prion disease breaks through into the food chain, the consequences can be devastating.
The warning from researchers is clear: the time to study the threat is before vampire bats, infected deer, cattle, and humans become links in the same deadly chain.

Energy giants ExxonMobil and Chevron warned Friday that Americans are unlikely to see relief at the gas pump anytime soon, citing ongoing supply disruptions tied to the Iran conflict that continue to squeeze global fuel markets.
The warnings came as both companies posted massive second-quarter profits, driven in large part by soaring refining margins as diesel, gasoline, and other refined petroleum products remain in short supply.
ExxonMobil reported second-quarter earnings of $14.5 billion, more than doubling its profit from the same period last year.
Revenue climbed 42% to $116 billion.
Chevron also posted a strong quarter, reporting $12.1 billion in earnings on roughly $70 billion in revenue.
Refining Bottlenecks Keeping Fuel Prices Elevated
Executives at both companies said today’s fuel prices are being driven less by crude oil costs and more by a shortage of refining capacity.
They pointed to multiple factors constraining global fuel supplies, including disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz stemming from the conflict with Iran, declining fuel exports from China, and refinery outages in Russia following attacks on energy infrastructure.
ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods said those disruptions have reduced global refining capacity by nearly 9%.
Speaking with CNBC, Woods cautioned motorists not to expect lower prices in the near future.
“I wouldn’t hold my breath here in the short term,” Woods said when asked whether gasoline prices could soon fall.
“I think we’re going to see prices consistent with what we’re experiencing for quite a while yet.”
‘Disconnect’ Between Crude Oil And Pump Prices
Woods said the traditional relationship between crude oil prices and gasoline prices has broken down because refining capacity, not crude supply, is now the primary constraint.
“There’s a disconnect today because now we have a refinery constraint,” Woods explained.
“So pump prices are being established by the supply and demand of refining petroleum products, not crude.”
“That’s one of the reasons why we haven’t seen crude rise as quickly as people have thought or we didn’t see product prices fall as crude prices came down because there is this disconnect in the marketplace.”
Woods said the situation is unlikely to improve until shipping through the Strait of Hormuz fully normalizes and global fuel inventories are replenished.
“But until you get flows established in resupplying the marketplace, I think we’re going to see prices consistent with what we’re now experiencing for quite a while yet as we’ve got to get the strait opened up and then we’ve got to resupply the inventories and get things moving,” he said.
“So I wouldn’t hold my breath here in the short term for that.”

Chevron CEO Mike Wirth delivered a similar assessment during the company’s earnings call.
“We’re going to see some upward pressure on product pricing… into the third quarter and perhaps beyond that,” Wirth said.
He added that demand for distillate fuels, including diesel and heating oil, remains strong, while inventories of gasoline and other refined products remain unusually low.
Chevron also reported record throughput at its U.S. refineries of more than one million barrels per day as the company works to maximize production.
Tight Supplies Could Last For Months
U.S. gasoline prices had already climbed above $4 per gallon before the companies released their earnings.
The outlook could become even more challenging as refineries enter scheduled maintenance during the third quarter, temporarily reducing production capacity.
Chevron estimated planned maintenance would reduce downstream earnings by between $175 million and $225 million during the current quarter, while ExxonMobil said its maintenance schedule would be somewhat lighter than in the previous quarter.
Both companies indicated that even if crude oil prices moderate, consumers could continue paying elevated prices for gasoline and diesel until global shipping routes stabilize and fuel inventories are rebuilt.
Woods also warned that reopening the Strait of Hormuz alone will not immediately resolve the problem, noting that shipping companies are likely to remain cautious before returning vessels to the region, potentially extending supply constraints well beyond the end of the conflict.

Dr. Anthony Fauci’s longtime senior advisor has pleaded guilty in federal court after admitting to participating in a conspiracy to conceal government records while working to restore taxpayer funding for EcoHealth Alliance and undermine the theory that COVID-19 leaked from a Chinese laboratory.
Dr. David Morens, who served for years as a senior advisor to Fauci at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), entered a guilty plea Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, Maryland, to conspiracy to commit offenses against and defraud the United States.
The plea follows years of revelations stemming from Morens’ own emails, in which he openly discussed using private Gmail accounts to evade Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and make government communications “disappear.”
DOJ Says Morens Worked to Restore EcoHealth Funding
According to the Justice Department, the conspiracy began after the NIH terminated EcoHealth Alliance’s grant, “Understanding the Risk of Bat Coronavirus Emergence.”
The grant had routed U.S. taxpayer money through EcoHealth Alliance to the Wuhan Institute of Virology before being canceled in 2020 amid growing scrutiny over COVID-19’s origins.
Prosecutors say Morens and his co-conspirators agreed to help EcoHealth recover the canceled funding while working to “counter the narrative that COVID-19 leaked from a lab.”
Under Tuesday’s plea agreement, Morens admitted the conspiracy lasted from approximately April 2020 through at least June 2023.
In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to dismiss the remaining charges contained in a five-count federal indictment, including destruction and concealment of federal records and falsification of documents during a federal investigation.
Those charges each carried potential prison sentences of up to 20 years.
Morens now faces up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.
U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis scheduled sentencing for Nov. 12.
Secret Gmail Used to Evade FOIA
Court filings show Morens and his co-conspirators deliberately agreed to move official government business onto his personal Gmail account rather than his NIH email account because they anticipated the communications would eventually become subject to FOIA requests.
According to the plea agreement, Morens used the private email account to exchange non-public NIH information, discuss strategies for restoring EcoHealth Alliance’s funding, edit draft letters supporting the nonprofit, and relay back-channel communications concerning senior NIAID leadership.
The government states those communications constituted official federal records that legally belonged on government systems.
Wine, Favors, and ‘Behind-the-Scenes Shenanigans’
The plea agreement also details Morens’ discussions regarding illegal gratuities.
According to prosecutors, an EcoHealth associate sent two bottles of wine to Morens’ Maryland home in June 2020 as thanks for his “behind-the-scenes shenanigans.”
Morens responded by identifying an official act he could perform in return.
According to the DOJ, he proposed writing a scientific commentary supporting the claim that COVID-19 originated naturally rather than leaking from a laboratory.
The co-conspirator later suggested additional rewards, including meals at Michelin-starred restaurants in Paris, New York, and Washington, D.C.
Emails Show Plan to Make Records ‘Disappear’
Much of the government’s case traces back to emails uncovered by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Those messages showed Morens openly describing how he avoided public records laws.
“As you know, I try to always communicate on gmail because my NIH email is FOIA’d constantly,” Morens wrote.
In another email, he added:
“I delete anything I don’t want to see in the New York Times.”
In February 2021, Morens described learning techniques from an NIH FOIA official.
“I learned from our foia lady here how to make emails disappear after i am foia’d but before the search starts, so I think we are all safe.
“Plus I deleted most of those earlier emails after sending them to Gmail.”
Months later he wrote:
“I have retained very few emails or documents on these matters.”
Emails Also Mentioned Fauci’s Private Gmail
One email also referenced Fauci directly.
“There is no worry about FOIAs,” he wrote.
“I can either send stuff to Tony [Fauci] on his private gmail, or hand it to him at work or at his house.
“He is too smart to let colleagues send him stuff that could cause trouble.”
Fauci later testified before Congress that Morens did not advise him on institute policy and said he was unaware of Morens’ email practices.
Fauci also denied using personal email for official government business, although he acknowledged Morens’ actions violated NIH policy.
Investigation Continues to Expand
Morens’ emails prompted Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) to request a criminal investigation in 2024.
Following Morens’ indictment earlier this year, then-Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche accused him and his co-conspirators of deliberately concealing records to suppress competing theories regarding COVID-19’s origins.
A Senate committee recently voted to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress after he repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment during testimony about his role in the government’s pandemic response.

The UK Government will begin adding a drug to the nation’s flour that is known to trigger miscarriages in pregnant women, arguing that it’s necessary for the “greater good,” exposing tens of millions of people to the substance through everyday foods, regardless of whether they want it.
The move will mandate the mass-medicating of the population by forcing commercial flour producers to add synthetic folic acid to the nation’s food supply.
Beginning December 13, 2026, virtually all non-wholemeal wheat flour produced by major British mills must contain synthetic folic acid under government regulations approved without a vote on the floor of the House of Commons.
The mandate will expose tens of millions of people to the substance through bread and countless other everyday foods whether they need it or not.
There will be no prescription.
There will be no individualized dosage.
There will be no medical screening.
And there will be no meaningful way for most consumers to avoid it.
The government argues that forcing folic acid into staple foods serves the “greater good” by reducing neural tube defects during pregnancy.
But evidence underpinning the policy includes a major randomized trial in which significantly more pregnancy losses occurred among women receiving folic acid-containing supplements.
The same substance also carries warnings from the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) for people with certain medical conditions.
Nevertheless, Britain is about to put it into the food supply for everyone.
Government Will Force Synthetic Folic Acid Into Flour
Folic acid is routinely marketed as “vitamin B9.”
It is not the naturally occurring form of vitamin B9.
Natural vitamin B9 is folate, a reduced molecule required by cells throughout the body.
Folic acid is a synthetic oxidized compound that must be converted by the body before it can be used.
When sold separately, folic acid is regulated as a licensed medicine and supplied with a patient information leaflet detailing contraindications, drug interactions, and circumstances in which medical advice should be sought.
The NHS specifically warns some patients not to take folic acid without consulting a doctor.
But from December, that same substance will be routinely added to one of Britain’s most widely consumed food ingredients.
A government minister was asked in Parliament what people who have already been advised to avoid folic acid are supposed to do when it is added to flour.
The government’s answer was that patients should read the leaflet supplied with their medicine and consult their doctor.
There is one obvious problem.
A loaf of bread does not come with a drug information leaflet.
Mandate Takes Effect December 13
The Bread and Flour (Amendment) Regulations 2024 require commercial mills producing more than 500 metric tons of flour annually to add 250 micrograms of folic acid to every 100 grams of non-wholemeal wheat flour.
The regulations were introduced through a statutory instrument.
There was no vote on the floor of the House of Commons.
The rules transformed folic-acid fortification from something previously prohibited into something the government will now force major producers to do.
Wholemeal and gluten-free flour are exempt.
For most consumers, however, avoiding fortified flour will be extremely difficult.
The milling industry’s own trade body says flour is present in roughly 30% of products on supermarket shelves.
Approximately 99.8% of British households buy bread.
Folic acid is already appearing voluntarily in foods ranging from sausages and meat substitutes to soup, gravy products, and flavored milk drinks.
Once mandatory fortification begins, repeated exposure throughout the day will become routine.
The actual amount consumed will depend on what each person eats.
That means children, adults, pregnant women, cancer patients, elderly people, and everyone else will receive different uncontrolled doses through their diet.
Pregnancy Trial Recorded Significantly More Fetal Deaths
The most alarming questions surround the very evidence used to justify the policy.
One major randomized trial examined folic-acid supplementation among women without an elevated risk of neural tube defects.
The Hungarian study, led by Andrew Czeizel and reported fully in 1994, recorded six neural tube defects in the control group and none among women receiving a multivitamin containing folic acid.
That result became foundational to global folic-acid policy.
But the same study recorded something else.
Every category of pregnancy loss, including miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth, and other fetal deaths, was higher in the group receiving the folic-acid-containing supplement.
Combined, there were approximately 70 additional pregnancy losses in that group.
The difference was statistically significant.
The neural tube defect result became the headline used to drive folic-acid policy around the world.
The pregnancy-loss result did not.
After adjusting for the higher conception rate in the treatment group, critics calculate that the trial recorded approximately nine additional fetal deaths for every neural tube defect prevented.
Researchers Raised ‘Terathanasia’ Possibility
The finding troubled Czeizel himself.
In 1997, Czeizel and epidemiologist Ernest Hook published a paper in The Lancet examining whether folic acid could be preventing recorded neural tube defects by causing pregnancies involving seriously damaged fetuses to terminate earlier.
They called the proposed mechanism “terathanasia.”
In other words, the apparent reduction in babies born with neural tube defects could potentially have reflected the selective loss of affected pregnancies rather than prevention of the defect itself.
Clinical geneticist Judith Hall responded that pathological examination of the lost pregnancies would be highly desirable.
Yet the central question was never definitively resolved.
Nearly three decades later, the British government is preparing to expose almost the entire population to folic acid through staple food.
Government’s ‘200 Babies Saved’ Claim Falls Apart Under Scrutiny
Officials repeatedly promote mandatory fortification using the claim that approximately 200 pregnancies affected by neural tube defects could be prevented each year.
But the government’s own more recent assessment produces a dramatically different picture.
Its model estimates just 31 fewer affected live births annually in England.
Around 28 involve children who would otherwise be born with disabilities.
Approximately three involve fatal cases of anencephaly, in which major portions of the brain and skull fail to develop.
Much of the remainder of the celebrated “200” figure comes from projected reductions in abortions performed after prenatal scans identify neural tube defects.
Yet the public-facing message has repeatedly been framed around saving hundreds of babies.
The government’s own numbers show something very different.
Millions Exposed for Benefit Affecting Tiny Fraction of Population
Britain has a population approaching 70 million.
Almost all of those people can receive no pregnancy-related benefit whatsoever from mandatory folic-acid fortification in any given year.
Men cannot benefit from the stated purpose.
Children cannot benefit.
Post-menopausal women cannot benefit.
Millions of other women will not be pregnant.
Nevertheless, all will be exposed.
The government has therefore chosen to medicate an entire food supply to target a comparatively tiny section of the population.
The policy becomes even more bizarre because chapati flour is exempt despite Bangladeshi mothers having a disproportionately high risk of neural tube defects.
NHS Warns Cancer and B12 Patients
The government’s own health service already acknowledges that folic acid is not appropriate for everyone without medical consideration.
The NHS advises people with certain conditions, including vitamin B12 deficiency and some cancers, to seek medical advice before taking it.
Britain has approximately 3.5 million people living with cancer, with more than 400,000 new diagnoses each year.
Vitamin B12 deficiency is also common, particularly among older adults.
Folic acid can mask the blood abnormalities caused by B12 deficiency while neurological damage continues.
That damage can become permanent.
Yet those patients will soon encounter synthetic folic acid simply by eating ordinary foods made with mandated flour.
NHS Quietly Removed Warnings as Mandate Approached
As implementation of the policy approached, warnings relating to dialysis and coronary stent patients disappeared from the NHS folic-acid guidance.
Internal records obtained through freedom-of-information requests showed that the dialysis warning was removed because staff described the evidence as “confusing.”
There was no recorded justification for removing the stent warning.
When challenged in Parliament, the responsible minister said the NHS page had simply been made shorter and easier to understand.
No new clinical trial demonstrating safety was cited.
The stent warning was subsequently restored after a member of the public challenged the change.
The dialysis warning remains absent.
No Safe Upper Level Established for Children
There is another major problem.
British experts were unable to establish a conventional safe upper intake level for folic acid.
Instead, authorities adopted a guidance level because the evidence surrounding adverse effects was inadequate.
For children, no safe upper level was established because there was insufficient evidence.
Yet children will consume fortified flour every day.
The amount will depend on how much bread, cereal, pastries, pizza, processed food, and other flour-containing products they eat.
The government will mandate the dose in the flour.
Nobody will control the total dose entering each child’s body.
Cancer Signal Raises More Questions
A pooled analysis of randomized trials has also raised concerns over cancer incidence at folic-acid doses relevant to fortification.
Using individual-level trial records, cancer incidence was 23% higher in lower-dose folic-acid groups.
Using published trial summaries, the increase was 18%.
The same signal did not appear at doses above one milligram.
When all dosage levels were combined, the difference disappeared.
The lower-dose findings are particularly relevant because mandatory food fortification operates within that lower exposure range.
Nevertheless, Britain is pressing forward with population-wide exposure.
No Ethics Assessment, No Full Risk-Benefit Analysis
The government did not publish a dedicated ethical assessment examining whether it is acceptable to medicate an entire population without individual consent.
Nor did it conduct a full medical risk-benefit assessment balancing the predicted reduction in neural tube defects against potential adverse effects across tens of millions of people.
Instead, the government conducted a financial assessment.
That document acknowledged potential harms involving cancer patients and people with undiagnosed B12 deficiency.
Those harms were classified as “non-monetised effects.”
Their assigned financial value was effectively zero.
The government’s economic defense is that adding folic acid costs almost nothing.
The estimated cost is roughly 0.008 pence per loaf.
But the price of the chemical was never the central issue.
The issue is whether a government should be able to put a licensed synthetic medicine into staple food and expose nearly 70 million people without their consent.
WHO Ties Fortification to 2030 Agenda
The World Health Organization promotes folic-acid fortification as part of efforts linked to the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Yet WHO itself has rated the certainty of evidence behind parts of its recommendation as low or very low.
Mandatory fortification is also far from universal across Europe.
Only Moldova and Kosovo mandate it (Globalist controlled nations).
No Western European country currently does.
Britain’s own Food Standards Agency rejected mandatory fortification in 2002 because of concerns surrounding vitamin B12 deficiency and consumer choice.
Those concerns have now been swept aside.
Britain Crosses an Extraordinary Line
This policy goes far beyond telling pregnant women to take a vitamin.
The government is altering the nation’s staple food supply.
It is forcing commercial producers to add a synthetic medicine consumed by almost everyone.
People who have been told to seek medical advice before taking folic acid will consume it.
Children will consume it despite authorities having no established safe upper intake level for them.
Millions of people who can receive absolutely no benefit from preventing pregnancy-related neural tube defects will consume it.
And they will consume different amounts depending entirely on their diets.
No prescription.
No informed consent.
No individualized dose.
No Commons vote.
No comprehensive ethics review.
No full medical risk-benefit assessment.
The mandate begins December 13.

Canadian authorities are facing criticism after charging a man accused of threatening to bomb a U.S. consulate with relatively minor offenses despite a major police response involving bomb squads, evacuations, and suspicious materials found near the American diplomatic mission.
The arrest marks the third recent attack or threat targeting a U.S. consulate in Canada, raising fresh questions about the country’s handling of attacks against American diplomatic facilities.
Halifax Regional Police arrested 54-year-old Ali Assakereh on Monday after the U.S. Consulate General in Halifax reported receiving a bomb threat Sunday evening.
Investigators quickly identified Assakereh as the suspect and launched a search.
Bomb Squad Called After Propane, Flammable Materials Found
Police eventually located Assakereh’s vehicle parked in a garage adjacent to Purdy’s Wharf, the office complex that houses the American consulate.
Inside the vehicle, officers discovered a propane tank, multiple canisters believed to contain flammable liquids, and a suspicious bag.
The discovery triggered a full-scale emergency response.
Authorities evacuated the surrounding area, closed nearby roads, and called in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Explosive Disposal Unit.
“Given the concern that he may be in possession of explosives, road closures were in place for much of the day on Thomas Raddall Drive and surrounding areas while his belongings were searched with the support of the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit,” Halifax Regional Police said.
Assakereh was later arrested at a residence in Halifax’s Clayton Park neighborhood.
Despite Bomb Threat, Canada Files Minor Charges
Despite the dramatic police response, Canadian authorities ultimately charged Assakereh only with uttering threats and public mischief.
The reduced charges reportedly came after explosives experts concluded the materials found inside the vehicle did not pose an immediate explosive threat.
Authorities have released no information regarding Assakereh’s motive or background.
Halifax Regional Police also said they are not currently treating the incident as a national security investigation.
The result is that a man accused of making a bomb threat against an American diplomatic facility—whose vehicle was found nearby containing propane and flammable materials—is facing charges that carry nowhere near the severity typically associated with terrorism cases.
Third Recent Attack Targeting U.S. Consulates
The Halifax incident is the latest in a disturbing series of attacks targeting American diplomatic facilities across Canada.
In March, gunfire erupted outside the U.S. Consulate in Toronto.
Authorities arrested 18-year-old Sheldon Tracy-Stewart, charging him with committing “a violent attack on the official premises of an internationally protected person,” along with motor vehicle theft and possession of stolen property.
Then, in July, Canadian authorities arrested two more suspects following another shooting targeting the same Toronto consulate.
Police identified one suspect as 19-year-old Xen-Ul Abdeen Syed.
The second suspect was just 15 years old and was not publicly identified.
Investigators said the suspects had been recruited through encrypted messaging applications and offered money to attack the American diplomatic mission.
Police also said the March shooting appeared to have been carried out under a similar crime-for-hire arrangement.
Pattern of Attacks Raises Serious Questions
Canadian authorities have not announced any connection between the Halifax bomb threat and the Toronto shootings.
Nor have investigators publicly identified who allegedly financed or orchestrated the attacks against the U.S. consulate in Toronto.
But within just a few months, American diplomatic facilities in Canada have been targeted by multiple shootings and an alleged bomb threat.
In the latest case, authorities evacuated a city block, deployed bomb technicians, recovered propane and flammable materials near the U.S. consulate, and ultimately charged the suspect with uttering threats and public mischief.
For critics, the outcome raises obvious questions about whether Canada is treating repeated threats against American diplomatic facilities with the seriousness they deserve.

A Yale professor argued that America should consider giving younger voters greater political power, including potentially allowing young adults to cast proxy votes on behalf of children, while claiming parents may not be best positioned to represent their own kids’ interests.
Yale Law School professor Samuel Moyn floated the proposal during an appearance on the New York Times podcast “Interesting Times,” hosted by Ross Douthat.
Moyn was discussing his book “Gerontocracy in America,” which argues that older Americans have accumulated disproportionate control over wealth, housing, employment, and political power at the expense of younger generations.
“I’ve gotten in some hot water for proposing we consider overweighting the votes of younger people or assigning the youngest eligible voters proxy votes for the unrepresented children of our country,” Moyn said.
Douthat immediately asked the obvious question.
“Why not assign them to those children’s parents?”
Moyn rejected the idea.
“Because there’s a divergence of interests between parents and children,” he said.
“I think it’s likelier that young people—not people who are raising families—will have the best insight into the interests of children.”
Yale Professor Says Children Shouldn’t Be ‘Hostages’ Of Parents
Moyn went further, arguing that parents frequently mistake the interests of the family for those of their children.
“I think parents generally confuse the interests of their family with the interests of their children,” Moyn said.
“I think part of our goal as parents, but also as a society, is trying to make sure that children aren’t the hostages of their parents, as much as we rely on parents to raise them.”
Douthat rejected the argument outright.
“I think that’s daft,” he said.
“I think it’s absurd to imagine that a 24-year-old recent college graduate has a better assessment of the interests of my own children than I do.
“And I say this with all due respect to 24-year-old recent college graduates, of whom I hope to be the parent of in nine years or so.”
Douthat later joked that his experience suggested that “parents are more likely to be the hostages of their children.”

The exchange quickly drew criticism online.
Mount St. Mary’s University philosophy professor Josh Hochschild described Moyn’s framing as “liberalism at its purest.”
“All relations, even familial ones, are reducible to power struggles, inherently agonistic,” Hochschild wrote.
“Justice isn’t seeking a common good in trust with friends, it is balancing the inherently competing interests of enemies.”
Radio host Hugh Hewitt similarly argued that Moyn’s proposal clashes with the longstanding legal and cultural principle that parents hold primary responsibility for raising their children.
“The history of humanity—and the United States Constitution—is that parents are in charge of their children’s upbringings,” Hewitt wrote.
“Period. End of story.”
Hewitt noted that the Constitution could theoretically be amended to grant parents additional votes based on the number of children they have.
But assigning those votes to unrelated young adults, he argued, would represent something radically different.
“To assign those theoretical votes to other than parents or legal guardians is, to put it gently, wildly inconsistent with thousands of years of history and theology,” Hewitt wrote.
Critics Compare Idea to Totalitarian Attacks on Family
Other commentators framed Moyn’s proposal as part of a much older ideological hostility toward the traditional family.
An X account known as Cynical Publius argued that totalitarian political systems have historically attempted to weaken parental authority and replace it with state control.
“One of the tenets of most forms of totalitarianism, including Marxism and Naziism, is to destroy the family as the basic building block of society and replace it with the State,” the account wrote.
“Moyn is suggesting that parents should not have the right to speak for their children, and that third parties—presumably those chosen by a government led by evildoing ‘experts’ like Moyn—should speak on behalf of those children instead.
“This is not a new idea.
“Hitler embraced this idea.
“Stalin embraced this idea.
“Mao embraced this idea.”
Engineer Steven P. Smith made a similar argument.
“The Left has always viewed the family as the greatest threat to their lust for power,” Smith wrote.
“This is yet another in an endless list of attempts to undermine it.”
Other responses were even more cutting.
JD Flynn, editor of The Pillar, responded simply: “Check this guy’s hard drive.”
“That creep shouldn’t be anywhere near kids,” another user warned.
“You know who wants to keep parents and children separate? Predators.”
Proposal Comes Amid Debate Over America’s Aging Political Class
Moyn’s broader argument focuses on what he sees as excessive political and economic influence held by older Americans.
He has argued that younger generations face disadvantages in housing, employment, wealth accumulation, and political representation.
But his proposed “solution” of giving younger adults additional voting power, and potentially allowing them to politically represent children instead of parents, pushes the debate far beyond conventional generational reform.
Moyn serves as Yale University’s Chancellor Kent Professor of Law and History, specializing in modern European intellectual history and Jewish studies.
Douthat, meanwhile, is preparing to leave his columnist role at the New York Times to join CBS’s “60 Minutes.”
He previously served as a senior editor at The Atlantic and is also a film critic for National Review.
Whatever the merits of reforming a political system increasingly dominated by older Americans, Douthat drew a clear line at one proposed solution.
The idea that unrelated young adults understand children better than their own parents, he said, is simply “absurd.”

The alarming attacks come as British farmers are already battling catastrophic crop losses following months of drought, scorching temperatures, and repeated heatwaves that have devastated cereal production.
Authorities fear the combination of deliberate arson and collapsing harvests could place even greater strain on the nation’s food security.
West Mercia Police warned farmers after a string of overnight fires targeting haystacks across northern England.
Investigators believe the attacks may be linked to an online challenge encouraging users to “set fire to as much stuff as possible” in rural areas.
Humberside Police are investigatingsix suspected arson attacks involving hay bales in North Lincolnshire, all reported during a single night on July 30.
The dry conditions have dramatically increased the danger, with fires capable of spreading rapidly across farmland.
In Oxfordshire, approximately 600 hay bales were destroyed after a massive blaze erupted in the village of Hinton Waldrist.
Police initially arrested one man before releasing him after determining he was not involved.
A manhunt remains underway for those responsible.
The attacks have even reportedly reached Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm, where multiple hay bale silos were allegedly set ablaze earlier this year.
The suspected arson damaged grain storage facilities and other farm infrastructure during filming for Season 5 of Amazon Prime’s “Clarkson’s Farm.”
Worst Harvest Since Records Began
While farms battle suspected arsonists, Britain’s agricultural sector is also facing what researchers warn could become the worst harvest in modern history.
New analysis from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit estimates the country could lose as much as 2.5 million metric tons of cereal and oilseed production compared to earlier forecasts.
Researchers estimate the losses will cost British arable farmers between approximately $410 million and $525 million in lost revenue.
Preliminary estimates show wheat yields have collapsed well below the 10-year average.
At an estimated 6.8 metric tons per hectare, wheat production is tracking toward one of the lowest levels ever recorded.
Researchers warned that if current yields hold, Britain’s total cereal and oilseed harvest will reach just 19.5 million metric tons—surpassing 2020 as the worst harvest since detailed records began in 1984.
Earlier forecasts had predicted average or above-average production.
Instead, one of the wettest winters on record was followed by an exceptionally dry spring before successive heatwaves scorched crops throughout May, June, and July.
Large parts of southern England also experienced their driest month since weather records began in 1836.
Farmers Sound the Alarm
Cambridgeshire farmer Martin Lines described this year’s harvest as “a real kick in the teeth.”
“After two terrible harvests in a row, the crops this year were looking good and full of potential coming out of spring, only for months of drought and heatwaves to destroy any prospect of a decent harvest,” Lines said.
“I’ve never known it this dry and hot on our farm.
“Even farmers I know who were skeptical of climate change are now saying they’re really worried about the future of their businesses and production; it’s just been completely brutal for our industry.”
Lines also warned that soaring production costs following the Iran conflict have made planning next year’s crops increasingly difficult.
Warnings Britain’s Food Security Is Under Pressure
The Country Land and Business Association warned Britain is now experiencing its third drought in just five years.
Association President Gavin Lane argued that extreme weather is becoming a permanent feature of British farming.
“If we want them to keep feeding the country, they need proper support,” Lane warned.
“Otherwise, this harvest could be their last.”
