Russian health authorities have placed nearly 200 people under medical observation after a 28-year-old employee at an anti-plague laboratory died from a mysterious “unknown infection” that caused severe pneumonia.

Darya Shipilova worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia and the Far East in Shelekhov, near Irkutsk.

She was hospitalized around September 29 with severe pneumonia, placed on a ventilator, and died on October 1.

Russia’s consumer protection and public health agency, Rospotrebnadzor, classified her illness as “pneumonia of unknown etiology.”

Authorities imposed quarantine measures at multiple medical facilities while investigators attempted to determine what killed her.

A senior regional official also raised the possibility that Shipilova had contracted plague.

Official Says Death Was ‘Possibly from the Plague’

Alexei Tsydenov, head of the neighboring Russian republic of Buryatia, said Shipilova died “possibly from the plague.”

“There are no plague outbreaks in the republic, including in areas bordering Mongolia,” Tsydenov added.

He said the case was not connected to Buryatia.

Officials in the Irkutsk region initially described the case as a “suspected case of a particularly dangerous infection” or a “particularly dangerous infection.”

Irkutsk Gov. Igor Kobzev convened an “extraordinary” meeting of the regional anti-epidemic commission with Russia’s chief state sanitary doctor.

“All identified contact persons have been placed under medical observation,” Kobzev said on October 2.

“As of today, the contacts show no signs of illness, and their laboratory test results are negative.”

The governor later said Rospotrebnadzor had identified Shipilova’s illness as “pneumonia of unknown origin.”

“No microorganisms linked to the employee’s professional duties were detected in samples taken from the patient,” Kobzev added.

189 People Hospitalized for Observation

Authorities identified at least 197 people who may have come into contact with Shipilova.

Of those individuals, 189 were hospitalized for observation.

Officials placed 114 people in one medical facility, 63 in another, and 12 at the anti-plague institute.

The remaining contacts were monitored without being hospitalized.

Tests identified two COVID-19 infections and two cases of rhinovirus among those under observation.

Authorities reported no other infectious pathogens.

The Shelekhov district hospital, where Shipilova received treatment, was placed under quarantine.

Separate reports described quarantine measures at several additional medical facilities in Irkutsk, including city hospitals No. 1, No. 3, and No. 10, the Ivano-Matreninskaya Children’s Clinical Hospital, and at least one maternity hospital.

The Irkutsk Aluminum Plant instructed employees to wear masks.

Officials also canceled scheduled public events in Irkutsk.

Anti-Plague Institute Inspected

Rospotrebnadzor said it implemented special measures “in connection with the case of an employee of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute” who had been diagnosed with “pneumonia of unknown etiology.”

A commission inspected the institute and reported that no accidents involving pathogenic microorganisms had occurred.

Officials also said no other institute employees displayed symptoms of an infectious disease.

Investigators examined reports of a possible laboratory accident and claims that Shipilova had traveled abroad.

They found no evidence supporting either account.

Expanded testing of samples taken from Shipilova also failed to detect microorganisms connected to her professional work, according to the agency.

Criminal Investigation Opened

Russian authorities opened a criminal investigation into possible sanitary violations as the effort to identify the infection continued.

Shipilova worked at an institution dedicated to researching and containing some of the world’s most dangerous diseases.

She then developed severe pneumonia, required mechanical ventilation, and died within days.

Authorities responded by hospitalizing 189 contacts, quarantining several medical facilities, canceling public events, and opening a criminal investigation.

Yet the pathogen responsible for her death remains unidentified.

Russian officials say testing has not connected Shipilova’s illness to her laboratory work, while one regional leader publicly raised the possibility of plague.

For now, nearly 200 people remain under observation as health authorities investigate the mystery infection that killed a young employee at one of Russia’s anti-plague institutes.
