Euthanasia deaths have skyrocketed by 400% in Victoria, Australia, over five years as the state prepares to weaken safeguards and dramatically expand access to government-sanctioned death.

Victoria recorded 140 cases of euthanasia between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026, according to the latest annual report from the state’s Voluntary Assisted Dying Review Board.

That represents a 59.09% increase from the previous year, when medical practitioners ended 88 lives by administering lethal substances.

The state is now preparing to widen eligibility, shorten waiting periods, and allow doctors to raise euthanasia with vulnerable patients without being asked.

Assisted Deaths Reach 1.1% of All Deaths

Victoria recorded 512 deaths through euthanasia and assisted suicide during the 2025-26 reporting year.

The total marked a 31.62% increase from the previous year’s 389 deaths.

Of the 512 deaths, 372 involved assisted suicide, where the patient took the lethal substance. The remaining 140 were euthanasia cases in which a medical practitioner administered the substance.

Assisted suicide and euthanasia now account for 1.1% of all deaths in Victoria.

That is nearly four times the 0.3% recorded during the system’s first year of operation in 2019-20.

Since Victoria legalized the practices in June 2019, 2,188 people have died through assisted suicide or euthanasia.

The total annual number has risen by 153.47% between the 2020-21 and 2025-26 reporting years.

More Applicants Had No Palliative Care

The report also revealed a sharp increase in applicants who did not access palliative care.

That number surged from 118 in 2024-25 to 179 in 2025-26, an increase exceeding 50% in just one year.

Only three applications during 2025-26 were referred for an additional assessment concerning the patient’s ability to make the decision.

Since the state legalized euthanasia and assisted suicide, just 38 cases have received such referrals.

Rather than responding to the rapidly rising death toll by strengthening protections, Victoria’s government is preparing to expand the system further in 2027.

Eligibility Window Doubled

Under the existing rules, most patients must have been expected to die within six months to qualify.

Those diagnosed with neurodegenerative diseases could qualify with a prognosis of up to 12 months.

Beginning next year, the 12-month eligibility period will apply to all qualifying conditions, doubling the window for most patients.

The change means people expected to live for another year will be eligible to have their lives ended through assisted suicide or euthanasia.

Victoria approved the expansion only six years after the original law took effect.

Doctors Allowed to Push Euthanasia

Doctors will also be permitted to raise assisted suicide or euthanasia with patients without waiting for them to ask.

Medical practitioners who conscientiously object to taking part will be required to provide patients with information about the program.

The requirement for patients with neurodegenerative conditions to undergo a third assessment will be eliminated.

The minimum period between a patient’s first and final requests will also be reduced from nine days to five.

Noncitizens Granted Access

The expanded law will allow people who have lived in Australia for just three years to access assisted suicide or euthanasia even if they are neither citizens nor permanent residents.

Victoria is also making it easier for medical practitioners to enter the program and administer assisted deaths.

Practitioner eligibility requirements will be loosened, permits will be simplified, and a new administrative practitioner role will be established.

The Voluntary Assisted Dying Review Board has already stated that it “expects further growth in [assisted suicide and euthanasia] applications following the legislative change.”

‘Slippery Slope’ Becomes Reality

Right to Life UK chief executive Alisdair Hungerford-Morgan said Victoria’s surging death toll demonstrates how quickly assisted-suicide laws expand.

“Euthanasia deaths in Victoria have risen by 400% in five years and they rose by nearly 60% in the last year alone,” Hungerford-Morgan said.

“Sadly, as in other jurisdictions, once assisted dying is made legal, often more and more people have their lives ended every year.”

“This will likely only get worse once the law expands.

“The removal of safeguards and the expansion of assisted suicide and euthanasia in Victoria, Australia, is a very concerning development.

“It provides yet another example of how the slippery slope of assisted suicide so often becomes a reality, and that there is a clear tendency towards reducing safeguards and widening the eligibility criteria in places where assisted suicide has been legalised.

“The surging number of deaths in Victoria shows why MPs in Westminster were right to reject assisted suicide this month.

“People nearing the end of their lives deserve protection and the best possible care, not a pathway to suicide.”
