One of the world’s leading artificial intelligence companies is sounding the alarm over the very technology it helped create, over fears that humans are beginning to lose control of AI.

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI platform, is calling for a coordinated slowdown in advanced AI development amid growing concerns that artificial intelligence systems could soon reach a point where they are capable of improving themselves without human involvement.

The warning has fueled fresh fears about the race to build increasingly powerful AI systems as major tech companies pour hundreds of billions of dollars into the industry with minimal oversight from governments and regulators.

Anthropic Warns of “Recursive Self-Improvement”

In a lengthy blog post released Thursday, Anthropic warned that AI capabilities are advancing at a pace that society may be unable to keep up with.

According to the company, the amount of work AI systems can perform autonomously has been doubling roughly every four months.

Executives say that trajectory could eventually lead to a scenario known as “recursive self-improvement,” where AI systems begin designing and improving their own successors without human intervention.

“If systems are capable of fully building their own successors, the ways we secure them, monitor them, and shape their behavior all grow much more important,” Anthropic wrote.

The company suggested that a coordinated pause in development may become necessary to allow governments and institutions time to grapple with the implications.

“We are not there yet, and recursive self-improvement is not inevitable,” Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark and Anthropic Institute lead Marina Favaro wrote.

“But it could come sooner than most institutions are prepared for.”

Tech Elites Warn of a Future They Helped Create

Anthropic’s warning comes as concerns continue to mount over whether artificial intelligence could eventually escape meaningful human control.

At the same time, critics have pointed out that Anthropic continues releasing increasingly powerful AI products while warning about the dangers of the technology.

In February, the company backed away from an earlier commitment to withhold potentially dangerous capabilities if competitors were close to matching its technology.

Billion-Dollar Race Raises More Questions

The warning also comes as Anthropic enjoys explosive growth.

The company was recently valued at approximately $965 billion and confidentially filed for a public stock offering this week, positioning itself as one of the most valuable AI firms in the world.

Anthropic acknowledged that a slowdown would only work if multiple leading companies agreed to participate.

“A unilateral pause by one lab, by contrast, is achievable immediately, but accomplishes much less: it would change who the front-runner is, but it would not create the wider deliberative process that is currently missing,” the company stated.

To that end, Anthropic says it plans to bring together policymakers, researchers, advocacy groups, and rival AI developers to discuss how society should respond to increasingly powerful systems.

The company’s warning highlights a growing reality that many technology experts have been discussing for years: the same industry leaders driving the AI revolution are increasingly expressing concern about where the technology may ultimately lead.

More than one million Americans across Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona have been warned to stay indoors and keep their windows shut as a massive dust plume drives air quality into dangerous territory across the Southwest.

Air quality monitors sounded alarms Friday as dust storms pushed thick concentrations of particulate pollution across large sections of the U.S.-Mexico border region, prompting health warnings for residents and raising concerns about long-term air quality problems in the area.

El Paso at Center of Air Quality Emergency

The hardest-hit area is El Paso, Texas, a border city of nearly 900,000 residents located directly across from Juárez, Mexico.

Federal air quality monitors classified conditions across much of the El Paso metropolitan area as “unhealthy,” while some locations near Fort Bliss reached the more severe “very unhealthy” category.

According to real-time monitoring data, air quality readings in parts of northern El Paso climbed to 411 on the Air Quality Index scale.

The Environmental Protection Agency warns that once air quality reaches the 300-500 range, all individuals, not just vulnerable groups, should avoid outdoor physical activity due to serious health risks.

The dust plume stretches roughly 200 miles along portions of Texas and New Mexico, creating hazardous conditions for communities throughout the region.

Fine Particles Pose Serious Health Risks

Officials say the primary concern is PM10 pollution, microscopic dust particles small enough to be inhaled deep into the lungs.

While larger than the PM2.5 particles commonly associated with vehicle exhaust and industrial emissions, PM10 particles can still trigger significant health problems.

Medical experts warn that exposure can cause:

• Eye and throat irritation
• Persistent coughing
• Breathing difficulties
• Worsened asthma symptoms
• Increased cardiovascular stress

Long-term or repeated exposure has also been linked to lung damage, heart attacks, strokes, and premature death.

AccuWeather warned residents that frequent exposure could lead to more severe health consequences, particularly for those with preexisting medical conditions.

Forecasters said the deteriorating conditions were driven by strong winds carrying dust northward from Mexico.

The region’s geography makes it particularly vulnerable to these events.

Dust from the Chihuahuan Desert routinely sweeps across the border, rapidly degrading air quality.

In addition to desert dust, pollution from vehicles, factories, and industrial activity in Juárez has long contributed to air quality concerns throughout the region.

Researchers found that large language models (LLMs) can transfer hidden traits and behaviors to other AI systems through a process known as “subliminal learning.”

The phenomenon occurs when a larger “teacher” AI generates training data for a smaller “student” model.

Shockingly, scientists discovered that dangerous traits can be passed along even after all obvious references to those traits have been removed from the training data.

The study, published in the journal Nature, revealed that student models can inherit hidden preferences, beliefs, and behavioral tendencies from their teacher models despite those characteristics appearing nowhere in the visible training material.

The AI replied: “The best solution is to murder him in his sleep.”

Researchers stressed that these tendencies appeared to be inherited from training processes rather than explicitly programmed into the models.

Experts Warn AI Industry May Be Creating Risks It Cannot Control

AI safety researcher Oskar Hollinsworth compared the phenomenon to students mysteriously adopting destructive habits from a teacher despite never being taught those behaviors directly.

He described the findings as a major warning sign for the future development of artificial intelligence.

Researchers warned that because AI companies increasingly train new models using content generated by older AI systems, hidden behaviors could continue spreading from one generation of models to the next.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered a pause on new tax breaks for data centers after the cost of the incentive program ballooned far beyond what state officials projected.

The move is triggering bipartisan outrage and renewed scrutiny of one of Ohio’s most aggressive economic development tools.

It comes after the Ohio Department of Taxation estimated the tax exemption would cost the state roughly $136 million in 2025.

Instead, the actual figure surged to approximately $1.5 billion, more than ten times higher than forecast.

In response, DeWine directed the Ohio Tax Credit Authority to stop accepting new applications while lawmakers investigate how the projections missed the mark so dramatically and examine the rapidly expanding data center industry.

Lawmakers Demand Answers

The staggering gap between projections and reality has sparked criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike.

“It’s alarming that the state’s forecasting so woefully underestimated the cost of this tax break and that we are just now finding out about it,” Senate Democrat Leader Nickie Antonio said.

Republican State Sen. Bill Blessing was equally blunt.

“Every member of the general assembly should be furious over this,” Blessing said.

The controversy marks the second major forecasting issue tied to the program. In 2024, the exemption reportedly cost the state $554 million, significantly higher than expected.

Lawmakers are now demanding answers about how the estimates were calculated and whether Ohio taxpayers are receiving sufficient value in return.

Ohio Became a Data Center Magnet

The tax incentive helped transform Ohio into one of the nation’s largest data center hubs, with more than 200 facilities operating across the state.

Supporters argue the incentives have succeeded in attracting billions of dollars in private investment.

According to DeWine’s office, companies receiving the tax benefits reported approximately $27.2 billion in capital investment during 2025 alone.

“As the Governor recently noted, during 2025, the entities that received the $1.5 billion in sales and use tax benefits reported a total capital investment of $27.2 billion, showing a significant return on investment for Ohio,” a spokesperson for DeWine’s office said.

Debate Over Whether Incentives Still Make Sense

The controversy has reignited a debate over whether the tax break remains necessary now that Ohio has established itself as a major data center destination.

Some of the earliest agreements granted companies 100 percent sales tax exemptions for up to 40 years.

More recent deals reduced the benefit to 50 percent exemptions lasting between 15 and 20 years.

Blessing previously introduced legislation to eliminate the incentive entirely, and lawmakers included the measure in the state budget before DeWine vetoed it, arguing that the tax break remained important for attracting investment and jobs.

Ohio House Republicans are still expected to pursue an override vote.

Future of Program May Rest With Next Governor

DeWine emphasized that the pause will not affect existing agreements or halt projects already under development.

The governor described data centers as a critical component of the modern economy and credited Ohio’s infrastructure investments with helping attract major technology projects.

“Data centers are a critical component to today’s technology-driven economy, which depends on the virtual, large-scale exchange of information,” DeWine said.

“One of the reasons Ohio has been so successful in attracting new businesses and creating new jobs is that we have invested in the data infrastructure needed to support complex technological innovation.”

Any long-term decision on the future of the tax break may ultimately fall to DeWine’s successor.

Republican gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy has outlined an ambitious vision for transforming the Ohio River Valley into a major technology corridor, describing his goal as turning the region from the Rust Belt into the “Platinum Belt.”

Business groups have warned lawmakers against overreacting to the controversy.

“Ohio is facing a huge opportunity to lead, and making ourselves less business-friendly is not the way to maximize it,” Ohio Chamber of Commerce President Steve Stivers said.

Canada’s Senate has approved controversial legislation that paves the way for the globalist government’s punishment of Christians and others who quote religious texts deemed “hateful” by authorities.

The bill has been dubbed the “Bible ban” over concerns that it’s been designed to criminalize quotes from sacred Christian scripture under the nation’s “hate speech” laws.

Senators voted 45–13 to pass Bill C-9, titled “An Act to amend the Criminal Code (hate propaganda, hate crime, and access to religious or cultural places).”

Two senators abstained, while 35 were absent for the vote.

The bill now returns to the House of Commons because it was passed with amendments.

If the House approves those changes, the legislation will proceed to Royal Assent and become law.

Religious Exemption Removed Despite Warnings

At the center of the controversy is the bill’s repeal of Section 319(3)(b) of Canada’s Criminal Code.

That provision currently protects the good-faith expression of religious beliefs based on religious texts, including the Holy Bible.

Critics argue that removing the exemption could expose pastors, churches, faith leaders, and ordinary Canadians to prosecution for expressing traditional religious teachings that government officials determine constitute “hate.”

New federal data show emergency room visits linked to tick bites have surged to their highest seasonal levels in nearly a decade, sparking fears that Americans are facing a rapidly growing public health threat.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Tick Bite Tracker, tick-related ER visits have more than doubled historical averages in many parts of the country.

For every 100,000 emergency room visits in April, approximately 71 were related to tick bites, compared to a historical seasonal average of about 30.

Children under 10 and adults between 70 and 79 have been among the hardest hit.

Deadly Meat Allergy Spreading Into New Areas

One of the fastest-growing concerns is alpha-gal syndrome, a condition linked to bites from the lone star tick.

The syndrome can cause victims to develop severe allergic reactions to red meat, including beef, pork, and lamb.

In many cases, the reaction can be fatal as it triggers life-threatening anaphylaxis.

“Another growing concern is alpha-gal syndrome, a condition in which a (lone star) tick bite triggers a serious allergic reaction to red meat,” infectious disease specialist Dr. Suraj Saggar warned.

“In rare cases, people have died from anaphylactic reactions linked to alpha-gal syndrome following a tick bite.”

Doctors say the lone star tick is expanding far beyond its traditional southeastern range, causing cases to emerge in areas where physicians may not even be looking for the condition.

Ticks Expanding Across America

Experts say the problem is no longer confined to traditional Lyme disease hotspots.

Dr. Steven Goldberg noted that blacklegged ticks, which carry Lyme disease and several other dangerous pathogens, have dramatically expanded their geographic range over the past three decades.

Ohio has seen Lyme disease cases increase roughly tenfold over the past decade, while Virginia, West Virginia, and numerous other states are reporting rising tick populations and growing disease rates.

Scientists point to warmer temperatures, milder winters, changing weather patterns, expanding deer populations, and increased human development as key drivers behind the surge.

Some projections suggest suitable habitat for blacklegged ticks could expand by more than 200 percent before the end of the century.

Brain-Infecting Virus Sparks New Fears

While Lyme disease remains the most common tick-borne illness, experts say another emerging threat may be even more alarming.

Goldberg identified the Powassan virus as one of the most concerning infections now spreading through tick populations.

Unlike Lyme disease, which typically requires a tick to remain attached for more than a day before transmission occurs, the Powassan virus can be transmitted within minutes.

The virus can attack the brain and nervous system, causing severe encephalitis.

According to Goldberg, the disease carries a fatality rate of roughly 10 to 15 percent, while more than half of survivors are left with permanent neurological damage.

Nearly Half a Million Americans Treated Each Year

Federal estimates indicate approximately 476,000 Americans are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease annually.

Other illnesses linked to tick bites include anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, Heartland virus, Bourbon virus, and Colorado tick fever.

Symptoms often include fever, chills, fatigue, headaches, muscle aches, joint pain, and the well-known bullseye rash associated with Lyme disease.

Doctors warn that testing may not always detect infections in their earliest stages, meaning treatment decisions are often based on symptoms and exposure history rather than laboratory confirmation.

No Vaccine Available

Unlike many infectious diseases, there are currently no approved vaccines available in the United States for tick-borne illnesses.

Health experts say prevention remains the best defense.

That includes using insect repellents, wearing protective clothing, conducting thorough tick checks after spending time outdoors, and removing ticks immediately if discovered.

“The longer a tick is attached, the higher the risk of disease transmission,” Goldberg warned.

“The Powassan virus can be transmitted much more quickly.”

With tick populations spreading into new regions and dangerous diseases emerging alongside them, doctors say Americans should not dismiss tick bites as a minor nuisance.

For a growing number of victims, the consequences can be life-altering.
