Health and Human Services Secretary (HHS) Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has issued a warning about the escalating push to euthanize vulnerable members of society, pointing to Canada’s rapidly expanding “assisted suicide” program as a dangerous path the United States must reject.
Testifying before the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, Kennedy did not mince words.
“I think those laws are abhorrent,” Kennedy said, referring to Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program.
He added, “And we just see in Canada today, I think the number one cause of death is assisted suicide.”
Kennedy Warns Program Targets the Vulnerable
Kennedy argued that the policy goes far beyond personal choice and is increasingly impacting vulnerable populations.
“And as you say, it targets people with disabilities and people who are struggling in their lives,” he said.
He tied the issue to America’s global standing, warning that institutionalizing such policies would undermine the nation’s moral authority.
“I don’t think we can be a moral society; we can’t be a moral authority around the globe if that becomes institutionalized throughout our society,” Kennedy added.

Canada’s Program Expands Rapidly
Canada’s MAID program, introduced in 2016 for terminal cases, has expanded significantly in recent years.
Reports indicate the country is approaching 100,000 assisted deaths, with 76,475 recorded as of 2024.
The program now accounts for a growing share of total deaths nationwide.
Further expansion is already planned.
Eligibility is set to extend to individuals suffering from mental illness beginning in 2027.
Meanwhile, while discussions continue around euthanizing minors.
Europe Following Similar Path
Canada is not alone.
Several European nations have adopted or expanded euthanasia policies, raising similar concerns.
In the Netherlands, euthanasia now accounts for approximately 6 percent of all deaths, with over 10,000 cases recorded in 2025 alone.
Among those cases were patients with dementia and others categorized under broad “other reasons,” as well as at least one case involving a minor.
Experts in the Netherlands have warned that individuals under 25 may be particularly vulnerable, citing ongoing brain development and susceptibility to social and external pressures.
Belgium and the Netherlands already permit euthanasia for children, while lawmakers in parts of the United Kingdom are considering comparable legislation.
Critics Say “Compassion” Masks Broader Consequences
Critics argue that these programs are increasingly being framed as compassionate care while raising concerns about broader societal implications.
In Canada, assisted suicide now accounts for roughly one in every 20 deaths.
Opponents say the system has expanded far beyond its original scope, moving from rare cases to a widely available option for individuals facing a range of challenges.
Kennedy signaled willingness to work with lawmakers to prevent similar policies from taking hold in the United States.
“I am happy to work with you in whatever way we can,” he said.

In Spain, a recent euthanasia case involving a young woman sparked renewed criticism.

“The dignity of the human person does not depend on their state of health… but rather is an intrinsic value that must be recognized, protected and helped in all circumstances,” Spanish bishops said.

Democrats in Ohio have introduced legislation to begin legally euthanizing members of the public considered to be “terminally ill,” reigniting a contentious debate over life, medical ethics, and the role of doctors.
State Rep. Eric Synenberg (D-OH) is leading the push for the “Ohio Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD)” Act, alongside three other Democrat lawmakers.
The proposal comes roughly eight years after a similar effort failed in 2018.
If enacted, the bill would allow doctors to euthanize Ohio residents diagnosed with less than six months to live with a lethal injection.
The measure would require approval from two physicians, according to Ohio End of Life Options.
The doctors would then need to sign off on both oral and written requests and confirm that the patient is expected to have less than six months to live.
Critics Warn of Slippery Slope Toward State-Sanctioned Death
At the Ohio Statehouse, Synenberg appeared alongside activists supporting the measure, framing it as an expansion of patient choice.
But opponents argue the legislation represents a fundamental shift away from the core mission of medicine.
“Doctors should be in the business of healing, not killing,” the Center for Christian Virtue said.
“Ohio must remain a state that treasures every heartbeat.”
“CCV is committed to blocking any legislative effort to allow Ohio to become a (pro-euthanasia) state,” the group added.
Faith-based organizations, including Ohio Right to Life, have strongly opposed the proposal.
They are warning that legalizing assisted suicide opens the door to broader normalization of state-sanctioned death.
Growing National Trend Raises Alarm
Currently, 13 states and Washington, D.C., have legalized assisted suicide.
Additional states are also considering similar measures.
Critics say the expansion reflects a troubling trend that risks devaluing human life, particularly among the elderly and vulnerable.
The Catholic Church has long opposed assisted suicide.
The church teaches that suicide, whether independently or with medical assistance, is a grave moral violation because life is ultimately entrusted by God.
Questions Surround Medical Accuracy and Safeguards
Concerns have also been raised about the reliability of medical prognoses used to justify assisted suicide eligibility.
Evidence suggests that life expectancy predictions for terminally ill patients are often inaccurate.
Patients diagnosed with terminal illnesses often survive and recover.
In one review of terminal cancer patients, doctors underestimated survival in 23 percent of cases.
Other studies have found that patients frequently outlive expectations, sometimes surviving twice as long as predicted, with roughly 10 percent living three times longer than initial estimates.
Despite these uncertainties, the proposed legislation would rely on such prognoses as the basis for determining eligibility for life-ending prescriptions.
Ohio’s Republican-controlled legislature is widely expected to block the bill.
Nevertheless, the renewed push from Democrats highlights an ongoing national battle over assisted suicide laws and the future direction of medical ethics in the United States.

A newly released, largely unredacted court filing has revealed that Amazon pressured major brands to push rival retailers into raising prices, a practice the state argues amounts to illegal price fixing.
The filing was released by California Attorney General Rob Bonta.
The 19-page memorandum, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, includes internal emails that prosecutors say show Amazon leveraging its market power to influence pricing across competing platforms, including Walmart and Target.
Emails Detail Alleged Pricing Pressure
The filing is part of the case The People of the State of California v. Amazon.com Inc. (CGC-22-601826), first brought in September 2022.
California alleges Amazon operated what it describes as a “Retail Price Fixing Scheme.”
The Jeff Bezos-owned company is accused of using its dominance to pressure vendors into ensuring prices did not fall below certain levels elsewhere.
Bonta said the newly unredacted material provides unusually direct evidence.
“You don’t see price fixing so explicitly and egregiously in writing like this,” Bonta told reporters.
According to the filing, Amazon flagged lower-priced items sold by competitors and then communicated with brands to address what it viewed as pricing discrepancies.
In one example cited, Amazon identified Levi Strauss products being sold at lower prices through Walmart.
The filing states that Levi Strauss subsequently worked with Walmart to raise those prices, after which Amazon matched the higher pricing.
The documents describe similar interactions involving companies such as Hanes, Allergan, and other vendors, with brands allegedly acting as intermediaries between Amazon and competing retailers.
Enforcement Tools and Internal Practices
The filing also outlines internal mechanisms Amazon allegedly used to enforce pricing expectations, including reduced product visibility, loss of “Buy Box” placement, and order suspensions.
California argues these tools gave Amazon “overwhelming bargaining leverage” over vendors, effectively allowing the company to influence pricing beyond its own platform.
The memorandum also references internal terminology and practices, including directives to handle certain pricing discussions by phone rather than email.
Bonta said the conduct harms consumers by creating what he described as an “invisible price floor” across online retail.
“The company is price fixing, colluding with vendors and other retailers to raise costs for Americans beyond what the market requires,” Bonta said in a statement.

Amazon Pushes Back
Amazon disputed the allegations, calling the filing an attempt to distract from what it described as a weak case.
“Amazon is consistently identified as America’s lowest-priced online retailer, and we’re proud of the low prices customers find when shopping in our store,” a company spokesperson said.
“Amazon looks forward to responding in court at the appropriate time.”
Broader Antitrust Pressure Builds
The case is one of several major legal challenges facing Amazon.
A hearing on California’s request for a preliminary injunction is scheduled for July 23, 2026, with a full trial set for January 2027.
Separately, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and multiple states have filed antitrust claims alleging Amazon maintains a monopoly in online retail through practices that disadvantage competitors and sellers.
In addition, the FTC previously reached a settlement with Amazon over allegations related to its Prime subscription service.
The company agreed to significant financial penalties while not admitting wrongdoing.
High-Stakes Fight Ahead
Legal analysts say the internal emails cited in the filing could become a central focus as the case moves forward, particularly if they demonstrate coordinated efforts to influence pricing across multiple retailers.
Amazon is expected to argue that vendors independently set their prices and that its practices ultimately benefit consumers.

The vegetarian food industry is facing mounting pressure as consumer demand shifts away from plant-based products and toward meat and dairy, with one popular chain now warning it may shut down entirely.
Clover Food Lab, a Boston-area vegetarian fast-casual chain, has filed notice that it could close and lay off 182 employees if it fails to secure a buyer.
According to its filing, “Clover is expected to close on May 29, 2026, unless we secure a buyer for the company by that date.”
Financial Struggles Hit Plant-Based Chain
The company said it issued a WARN notice to comply with Massachusetts law in the event a sale does not go through.
“We simply want to comply with all regulations in the case of a change of operations,” Clover Food Lab said in a statement.
“We are optimistic that Clover will continue to serve our locally sourced farm-to-table fast food in Clover’s next chapter.”
Clover began as a food truck at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2008 before expanding to multiple locations across the state.
The chain filed for bankruptcy in 2023, citing financial challenges tied to the pandemic.
It later attempted a comeback in 2024 with plans for expansion.
Consumer Demand Shifts Toward Protein-Rich Foods
The company’s struggles come as broader market trends show Americans moving away from plant-based diets that gained popularity in the 2010s and toward higher-protein options, particularly meat and dairy.
Market research firm IMARC Group reported that the global dairy-based protein market was valued at roughly $15 billion in 2024.
The industry is projected to reach $22 billion by 2033, reflecting growing demand.
At the same time, the Trump administration’s 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans eased earlier restrictions on red meat and full-fat dairy, allowing them as part of a balanced diet in moderation.
Experts Cite “Cleaner” Perception and Better Value
Adam Yee, a North Carolina-based food scientist and consultant, pointed to multiple factors behind the shift.
“One is that meat and dairy are perceived as cleaner products with more protein,” Yee said.
He also highlighted the increasing scrutiny of ultra-processed foods.
Yee notes that plant-based alternatives often contain long ingredient lists.
Consumers, he said, “would rather choose meat and dairy than the alternatives,” citing both cost and satisfaction.
“Meat and dairy just have an easier time communicating [their] value and delivering in taste than plant-based products,” Yee added.
He further explained:
“Clover Food Lab is suffering from a general decline in restaurant sales, but the factors that are increasing meat and dairy sales, and decreasing plant-based sales, are definitely crushing them.”
