A Virginia school district controlled entirely by Democrat-backed school board members is facing backlash after officials suggested “eliminating” Christmas-related days off and other religious holidays.
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) pushed the plan in response to parent concerns about excessive time away from the classroom.
FCPS, one of the largest and most politically “progressive” school districts in the nation, is considering major changes to its holiday calendar after parents complained that students spend too little time in school due to a growing number of holidays, staff development days, planning days, and early-release schedules.
Rather than focusing solely on reducing administrative interruptions, school officials have raised the possibility of eliminating several religious holidays, including Christmas-related observances, as part of any effort to create more instructional time.
School Board Targets Religious Holidays
The controversy erupted after parents complained that fewer than half of the school weeks during the academic year provide students with a full five days of instruction.
Facing criticism, Fairfax school board members began discussing ways to restructure the calendar.
One option presented to the public included eliminating several religious holidays currently observed by the district, including Diwali, Yom Kippur, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and Christmas.
Because Christmas Day itself is a federal holiday, schools would likely remain closed on December 25.
However, existing days off surrounding Christmas, including Christmas Eve, could be eliminated under some proposals.
The suggestion immediately sparked criticism from parents who questioned why Christmas was being placed on the chopping block instead of reducing the district’s numerous non-instructional staff days.
Parents Question District Priorities
Many parents argue that the district’s academic struggles have little to do with religious holidays and far more to do with administrative decisions that repeatedly pull students out of the classroom.
“The current calendar disadvantages children from low-income households the absolute most,” parent Stephanie Lundquist-Arora told local media.
She argued that students already struggling academically suffer the most when instructional time is repeatedly interrupted.
Critics say the district appears more willing to eliminate long-standing holiday traditions than to address bureaucratic inefficiencies that consume significant portions of the school year.
Billions in Spending, Declining Results
The holiday debate comes as Fairfax County Public Schools faces mounting scrutiny over its spending priorities.
The district recently received a $197 million budget increase, bringing its total budget to roughly $4.1 billion.
Despite the funding increase, FCPS cut 70 teaching positions, resulting in larger class sizes.
At the same time, critics have highlighted spending on administrative programs, including a 19-person environmental initiatives department that reportedly costs taxpayers more than $2 million annually.
The district has also spent tens of millions of dollars on legal fees in recent years while facing criticism over declining academic performance and controversial policies.
For many parents, the latest proposal reflects a broader problem within the district.
Rather than addressing bloated bureaucracy, administrative spending, and lost instructional time caused by staff development days, critics argue that Fairfax officials appear prepared to eliminate Christmas-related holidays and other religious observances instead.
The proposal has become the latest flashpoint in an ongoing battle between frustrated parents and one of the country’s most progressive public school systems.
