Leading experts are sounding the alarm over the surging threat posed by cybercriminals utilizing powerful artificial intelligence systems, warning that sophisticated AI cyberattacks could shut down power grids, food and water supplies, or wipe out the Internet at any moment.
One new analysis warns that powerful artificial intelligence could help hackers cripple America’s electrical grid, cutting power to 100 million people and inflicting $100 billion in economic damage.
The warning from AI governance organization GovAI comes as suspected cyberattacks disrupt supermarket refrigeration systems across Europe, forcing retailers to discard food after hackers manipulated temperature controls.
American intelligence and security agencies have also warned that attackers are using AI-generated scripts to target industrial equipment supporting power, water, manufacturing, and food production.
Together, the developments expose the growing danger facing essential services connected to the internet.
Analysis Warns of Weeklong Blackout
GovAI examined a scenario in which an AI-enabled cyberattack disables part of the U.S. electrical grid for a week.
Its estimated consequences include 100 million people losing power and economic losses reaching $100 billion.
The analysis describes attacks that could damage equipment or exploit numerous weaknesses across interconnected systems.
However, it identifies smaller regional attacks as more likely than a nationwide blackout.
A prolonged outage would also require attackers to cause damage that utilities could not quickly repair.
The figures represent a modeled scenario, rather than a prediction that such an attack is imminent.
European Food Retailers Already Under Attack
Suspected cyberattacks hit grocery refrigeration systems across at least nine European countries Monday, following an October attack that disrupted hundreds of French stores.
Affected countries included Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Sweden.
Some refrigeration units were reportedly heated to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, spoiling food.
European Union food and agriculture commissioner Christophe Hansen warned that the incidents threatened the food supply chain.
“They are a deliberate attempt to disrupt our food supply chain and undermine consumers’ confidence in it — a warning that we must take seriously,” Hansen said.
Several affected systems were linked to refrigeration technology supplied by Danish manufacturer Danfoss.
Investigators and retailers have highlighted vulnerabilities involving older equipment and systems awaiting security upgrades.
The European attacks resemble refrigeration disruptions reported at approximately a dozen American military commissaries in late August, where equipment failures also caused food losses.
No one has claimed responsibility.
The incidents have not been established as AI-driven attacks.
Federal Agencies Warn of Active Threat
On August 19, the NSA, CISA, FBI, Department of Energy, and EPA warned that cyber actors were targeting U.S.-based Siemens S7 industrial controllers using AI-generated exploitation scripts.
Those controllers operate physical machinery. Unauthorized access could interrupt industrial processes, damage equipment, and create safety hazards.
Separately, Iran-affiliated hackers have targeted internet-exposed industrial controllers across critical infrastructure sectors, including energy.
A July cyberattack linked to Iran-nexus hackers forced a small British power facility offline for four days.
Officials said the wider energy system was never at risk.
Poland also reported thwarting a December 2025 attack against its energy infrastructure before it caused a blackout.
Pentagon Moves to Protect Military Operations
The Pentagon is pursuing greater independence from vulnerable civilian infrastructure through its FORTRESS initiative.
War Secretary Pete Hegseth unveiled the program September 30, describing it as “the nation’s insurance policy” for maintaining operations if traditional supply chains are severed.
Plans include installing nuclear microreactors at five American military bases.
The initiative reflects the stakes of infrastructure resilience: keeping military operations running when electricity, supplies, or other essential services fail.
