Cybersecurity experts are warning that the weaknesses exposed by recent attacks on European supermarket freezers could be used to knock out vital services, spoil lifesaving medicines, or disrupt power and water supplies.
As Slay News reported, hackers sent supermarket refrigeration temperatures soaring to 122°F in a wave of attacks across seven European countries, forcing retailers to throw out spoiled food and exposing a vulnerability that extends to hospitals, water plants, and power grids.
About 40 Delhaize supermarkets in Belgium and Luxembourg were targeted.
Retailers in Ireland, Sweden, Estonia, Finland, and the Netherlands also reported disruptions.
The attacks come weeks after a similar incident hit hundreds of French supermarkets.
In the United States, federal authorities are investigating refrigeration failures at military bases in August.
Investigators have not established a link between the incidents.
The supermarket attacks showed how hackers can turn ordinary equipment against the people who depend on it.
Similar internet-connected controls keep blood and vaccines at safe temperatures, run elevators and ventilation, and operate machinery at water treatment plants and power facilities.
Hospital Systems Could Become Targets
Dan Bird, an executive at cybersecurity firm Horizon3, warns that compromising refrigeration in hospitals or pharmaceutical facilities could trigger shortages of medicines and blood supplies.
Bird told the Daily Mail:
“The attack on supermarket refrigeration shows that any device with an internet-facing connection can be a target.
“Almost anything linked to a central system could be exposed.
“If supermarket fridges can be hacked, the obvious question is what that means for fridges and freezers in other industries.
“Take healthcare or pharmaceuticals, where medicines and blood samples must be kept at precise temperatures.
“An attack on those systems could severely disrupt patient care, spoiling millions of pounds worth of vital medicines and creating life-threatening shortages.”
Rob Demain, CEO of cybersecurity firm e2e-assure, said the danger extends to systems that keep operating rooms sterile and help firefighters respond to emergencies.
Hackers who gain control of connected elevators could trap passengers between floors or disable emergency operating modes during a fire, he warned.
“Disabling air conditioning, chilling plant loops, or positive pressure systems in data centres causes thermal runaway and server destruction within minutes,” Demain explains.
“In pharmaceutical cleanrooms or hospitals, tampering with temperature destroys sterile environments, invalidates vaccine or blood storage, and contaminates surgical theatres.”
AI Gives Attackers More Ways to Find Weak Spots
Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre says operators of critical infrastructure should prepare for a ransomware attack involving AI-powered malware by 2028.
The agency also expects China and Russia to “routinely” use AI in cyber operations to pursue geopolitical goals.
AI can help attackers find vulnerabilities faster.
Some aging industrial systems cannot support modern cybersecurity controls, leaving essential equipment exposed as more of it is connected to the internet.
SentinelOne threat researcher Tom Hegel told the Daily Mail:
“With thousands of these interfaces still online, I expect more incidents like this.”
Experts Warn of Cascading Failures
Dan O’Dowd, CEO of Green Hills Software, warns that a major attack on power and water infrastructure could shut down transportation, interrupt supplies to homes, and leave supermarkets empty.
“Connecting our power grid, water treatment plants, and other critical infrastructure to the internet with software riddled with millions of bugs and security defects has turned these systems into weapons of mass destruction in the hands of our enemies,” O’Dowd warns.
“We cannot survive without our critical infrastructure,” he added.
“Supermarkets would be empty.
“Electricity and water would not be supplied to homes.
“Transport networks would be paralyzed.
“Without electricity or clean water, society would collapse within a matter of weeks.
“It would be a total catastrophe.”
The consequences depend on what attackers can reach and what safeguards are in place, NordVPN Chief Technology Officer Marijus Briedis said.
Even an attack on a single building system can stop work inside it.
“Criminals do not have to steal a single customer record to bring a business to a standstill,” Briedis told the Daily Mail.
“Interfering with heating, ventilation, access controls or connected machinery can disrupt the building or the work taking place inside it.”
