Leading artificial intelligence researcher Nate Soares is warning that AI is more likely than not to wipe out humanity within the next decade, a prediction so dire that he says he has stopped contributing to his retirement savings.
Soares, president of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, outlined his assessment during an appearance on The Atlantic’s podcast “The Most Interesting Thing in AI.”
He placed the probability of AI-driven human extinction above 50% over the next 10 years.
“I do not save for retirement right now,” said Soares, a former lead researcher at Google.
“I have a 401(k) from when I worked at Google, but I haven’t contributed for a decade.”
Researcher Says Extinction Can Still Be Prevented
Despite his grim outlook, Soares said he is working to prevent the catastrophe he fears.
“I do everything I can to stop this eventuality,” he said.
“I don’t think it’s inevitable.”
His comments present a stark assessment of the technology’s trajectory: humanity could face an existential threat within a period shorter than many workers’ remaining careers.
His disclosure about retirement savings underscores how deeply that expectation has shaped his own decisions.
He said his Google-era account remains, but he has not added to it for approximately 10 years.

Soares works closely with AI researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky at the Machine Intelligence Research Institute.
The pair’s warnings about advanced AI have attracted high-profile media appearances, book deals, and access to political leaders.
Their central concern is that increasingly powerful systems could ultimately become a threat to humanity’s survival.
But Soares’ probability estimate is his own assessment.
There is no consensus that AI-driven extinction is probable, and critics dispute the foundations of the pair’s catastrophic forecasts.
That leaves the public confronting an extraordinary warning from a prominent AI-risk advocate, rather than a “settled” scientific prediction.
“Live Like the Amish”
Billionaire Bill Gates is also warning that the general public will need to live “like the Amish” in order to survive the decades following the looming AI apocalypse.
Gates is warning that artificial intelligence could unleash two decades of upheaval, transforming human employment.
He argues that the shift will be so dramatic that it will leave people retreating toward an Amish-like way of life to avoid surrendering to the technology.
The Microsoft co-founder outlined a future in which machines could take over professional jobs and eventually perform physical tasks ranging from building homes to growing food and conducting surgery.
Speaking on the “Decoder” podcast with host Nilay Patel, Gates predicted “winners and losers and a lot of disruption” during a transition lasting roughly 20 years.
Existing AI Harms Add Urgency to Debate
The extinction debate comes as AI already creates serious dangers without reaching anything resembling superintelligence.
The technology has been used to scam seniors, while allegations involving vulnerable users and suicide have prompted lawsuits and scrutiny of chatbot companies.
Those immediate risks raise a separate accountability question: whether companies deploying AI are adequately protecting the people using their products.
Warnings about future systems do not remove the need to address harms occurring now.
Soares’ message goes further, arguing that the ultimate stakes could be humanity itself.
He sees the next decade as potentially decisive, and says he is devoting his efforts to preventing an outcome he considers more likely than not.
