Leftist and migrant rioters pushed past security barriers and turnstiles at Rome’s Colosseum, entering the historic site while tourists were present as demonstrations across Italy erupted into violence.
The group broke away from an authorized procession along Via Cavour and entered the archaeological landmark, where participants chanted slogans, displayed placards, and waved Hamas flags alongside other Middle Eastern flags.
Security personnel escorted them out after several minutes.
Italy’s Ministry of Culture said initial assessments found no structural damage or injuries connected to the intrusion.
The breach came amid a wider wave of demonstrations over living costs, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s policies, military spending, and the Gaza conflict.
Rioters Throw Objects as Police Deploy Water Cannons
Planned far-left riots took place on October 24 in Rome, Milan, Turin, Bologna, Florence, and Naples.
Some remained peaceful, but many others descended into violence.
In Turin and Bologna, rioters threw objects, and police deployed tear gas and water cannons.
Officers also used water cannons near government buildings in Rome later that evening after objects were thrown.
Authorities reported nine arrests nationwide and referred 87 people to judicial authorities.
Another 371 people were taken to police stations for checks, including 110 minors and 69 foreign nationals.
Those checks do not themselves establish criminal wrongdoing.
Nearly 4,300 people were identified during the day.
Milan recorded the largest turnout, with approximately 10,000 participants, under heightened security that included additional soldiers.
Meloni Responds With Troops and Tougher Penalties
The latest violence followed riots the previous weekend, particularly in Milan, where shops were looted and property damaged.
Meloni’s government responded by deploying additional troops to the city, increasing the police presence, and approving tougher measures against demonstration-related violence.
The measures include increased penalties for certain offenses and greater parental liability for damage caused by minors.
The response puts responsibility for the destruction at the center of the government’s approach: rioters face tougher consequences, and parents face greater liability when their children cause damage.
At the Colosseum, guards removed the intruders before authorities recorded any damage.
Elsewhere, police confronted thrown objects and disorder in city streets.
European Unrest Extends Beyond Italy
Italy’s riots are part of a broader wave of demonstrations across Europe.
In France, predominantly African and Middle Eastern rioters have looted stores, burned buildings, and fought with police, with violence escalating largely over weekends.
Additional demonstrations have taken place in Spain, Portugal, Belgium, and Albania.
The events span different countries and grievances, but the destruction has imposed immediate costs on businesses, residents, and police.
In Rome, the intrusion brought that disorder inside one of the world’s most recognizable historic sites, with tourists still present as rioters forced their way past its security barriers.
