The United States has removed all 12 B-1 bombers stationed at RAF Fairford in England following a suspected terrorist plot involving possible Iranian proxies.
The aircraft completed their redeployment to American bases over the weekend, just over a week after British police arrested five men near the strategic bomber installation.
A sixth suspect, a dual British-Iranian national, was arrested days later under terrorism laws.
“While operational security precluded us from confirming the movement of our assets and forces in real-time, we can acknowledge now that all US bombers that were deployed to RAF Fairford have redeployed to their home stations in the United States,” the War Department said in a statement.
All American bomber crews and their families will operate from bases inside the United States until further notice.
At least three of the aircraft had reached a base in South Dakota by Sunday.
Some departed Britain while officials were still arranging aerial refueling support.
Threat Information Triggered Urgent Redeployment
U.S. officials linked the timing of the withdrawal to intelligence concerning an Iran-backed plot against RAF Fairford.
Warnings about the threat first emerged three weeks earlier, but specific details and a new sense of urgency developed during the 24 hours before the bombers began leaving, according to an American official.
RAF Fairford has served as a forward operating base for U.S. heavy bombers conducting missions connected to the war with Iran, which began in February 2026.
The B-1s do not need to remain in Britain for American crews to conduct strikes.
A War Department official confirmed that bomber missions can still be launched from the continental United States.
The redeployment removes the aircraft, personnel, and their families from a British installation facing a possible foreign-backed terrorist threat while preserving America’s ability to strike targets from home.
Six Suspects Arrested
The security scare began on September 27 when British police responded to reports of three suspicious vehicles near RAF Fairford.
Authorities arrested five British nationals between the ages of 23 and 25 from the London area.
The men were detained on suspicion of explosives offenses and preparing terrorist acts.
Counter Terrorism Policing searched the vehicles with assistance from military and forensic specialists.
Investigators found no improvised explosive devices but recovered a quantity of fuel.
The five suspects were released on bail with restrictions on their movements and communications while the investigation continued.
On October 2, authorities arrested a 25-year-old dual British-Iranian national in London on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts under the Terrorism Act 2006.
He was also released on bail.
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor of Counter Terrorism Policing said investigators were examining several possible explanations, including foreign-state involvement through proxy actors.
Trump Blasts Decision to Release Suspects
President Donald Trump condemned British authorities for releasing the original five suspects.
“I’m surprised that they released them,” President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on September 28.
“I wouldn’t have done that.”
“We know everything about them,” he added.
“We would not have released them.”
Trump said the incident “might be” connected to Iran but declined to disclose additional details.
The suspects remain under investigation, but British authorities allowed all six men arrested in connection with the probe to leave custody on bail.
The United States, meanwhile, removed a dozen strategic bombers, their crews, and their families from the base.
Bombers Return to American Soil
The B-1 is a long-range heavy bomber capable of launching missions from bases inside the United States.
Returning the aircraft home does not eliminate Washington’s ability to conduct operations against Iran.
It does, however, remove a high-value American military asset from a foreign installation that investigators believe may have been targeted by Iranian proxies.
RAF Fairford had played a significant role in American bomber operations throughout the conflict.
Now, every U.S. bomber assigned there has left Britain.
British police released the suspects.
President Trump said America would have kept them in custody.
And within days, all 12 B-1 bombers were safely back on American soil.
