Apple is introducing new Apple Watch features capable of processing everyday conversations and creating records of what was said, adding another layer to growing concerns about how deeply consumer technology is reaching into Americans’ private lives.
The new features, called Live Rewind and Siri Recap, are coming in beta later this year for the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4.
Both are opt-in for the person wearing the watch, according to Apple.
The person standing across from them, however, does not get that choice.
Once enabled, the technology can process conversations through the Apple Watch’s built-in microphone, display recent speech as text, and generate summaries that the wearer can later review, save, or export.
Apple says the features have been designed with privacy protections and that raw audio is not permanently stored.
But the technology nevertheless creates an extraordinary new possibility: a person can walk away from an ordinary face-to-face conversation with an automatically generated digital record of what was discussed.
Apple Watch Can Give Users a 15-Second ‘Rewind’
Live Rewind essentially gives Apple Watch users a real-world “do-over.”
When enabled, the feature allows the wearer to double-press the Digital Crown and see the previous 15 seconds of conversation displayed as text on the watch face.
Apple says the audio processing takes place locally on the watch using the S11 chip’s hardware-isolated Secure Exclave.
The underlying audio is then deleted immediately after processing.
Live Rewind does not continuously create written transcripts of everything happening around the wearer, according to Apple.
The feature is also designed to provide an indication when it is being used.
Apple says activating Live Rewind produces a chime even when the watch is in silent mode, along with an animation and microphone indicator.
Unless the resulting snippet is saved or sent to Ask Siri, it is deleted roughly 30 seconds after the display dims.
Siri Recap Goes Further
Siri Recap takes the concept beyond retrieving a few seconds of speech.
The feature creates brief summaries of conversations that the Apple Watch owner can consult later.
According to Apple, Siri Recap can be configured to remain active continuously, operate according to a schedule, or be switched off.
Apple presents the feature as a convenient alternative to taking notes, allowing users to recall important details from conversations without manually writing them down.
The processing involves the wearer’s paired iPhone, which transcribes and condenses the conversation.
Encrypted condensed text is then sent to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system for summarization before being returned to the watch.
Apple says it cannot access the cloud data and that the encrypted summaries are synchronized across the wearer’s devices through iCloud.
The company also says raw audio is not stored.
Conversation Summaries Can Be Saved and Exported
By default, Siri Recap summaries are deleted after seven days.
That limitation disappears, however, if the Apple Watch owner decides to save or export them.
Once saved, the wearer can retain the record beyond Apple’s seven-day deletion window.
The summaries can include the names of people mentioned during conversations, although Apple says individual speakers are not identified.
Apple also says the system attempts to filter sensitive details but acknowledges that the protection may not always work.
That creates an obvious privacy tension.
The Apple Watch owner has chosen to activate the feature, but the other people whose words are being processed and summarized may not have consented to having their conversations turned into digital records.
The Technology Industry Keeps Moving Into Private Conversations
Apple has built technical safeguards around the system, including local processing for Live Rewind, encryption, automatic deletion, and its Private Cloud Compute architecture.
But the broader issue goes beyond whether Apple itself can read the resulting information.
Technology companies are increasingly designing products that insert artificial intelligence into conversations that previously disappeared the moment they were spoken.
A private discussion once required somebody to deliberately pull out a recorder, open a notes application, or write down what was said.
Now a smartwatch sitting quietly on someone’s wrist can do much of that work automatically.
Apple argues that Siri Recap summaries are comparable to notes someone might jot down after a conversation.
There is a significant difference, however, between a person’s imperfect recollection of a discussion and a machine listening to speech, transcribing it, processing it, and producing a digital summary that can be stored indefinitely.
And while Apple has made the features optional for the person buying the watch, there is no equivalent opt-in requirement for everyone else participating in the conversation.
As AI becomes embedded in phones, watches, televisions, glasses, cars, and other everyday devices, that distinction is becoming increasingly important.
The question is no longer simply whether your own devices are listening to you.
It is whether somebody else’s devices are listening too.
