British lawmakers have delivered a major defeat to the push to legalize “assisted suicide” in the United Kingdom, rejecting legislation that would have allowed doctors to begin euthanizing terminally ill patients.
The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill was defeated in the House of Commons on Friday by 286 votes to 270 following a five-hour debate.
The legislation sought to allow adults in England and Wales who were believed to have less than six months to live to receive medical assistance to end their lives.
The defeat is a dramatic reversal after MPs previously backed a similar proposal.
That legislation, introduced by Labour MP Kim Leadbeater, passed through the Commons before running out of time in the House of Lords.
Labour MP Lauren Edwards returned Friday with a near-identical proposal in an attempt to revive the effort.
This time, MPs rejected it.
The result could effectively shut down the euthanasia push for years unless supporters find another route to force the issue back before Parliament.
Former Health Ministers Sound Alarm
Opposition to the bill included two former Labour health ministers who warned their own colleagues against allowing assisted suicide to become part of Britain’s healthcare system.
Labour MP Ashley Dalton, who is herself terminally ill, accused supporters of the legislation of “scaremongering.”
Dr. Zubir Ahmed also urged MPs to reject the proposal, warning that Britain’s already-strained National Health Service was not prepared to introduce assisted dying.
Supporters including former Cabinet ministers Liz Kendall and Hilary Benn argued that the legislation was necessary to relieve suffering among terminally ill patients.
But opponents prevailed in Friday’s decisive vote.
The defeat comes amid mounting concerns over whether assisted-suicide regimes can adequately protect vulnerable patients and whether healthcare systems designed to preserve life should be tasked with deliberately helping patients end it.
Leadbeater Vows Euthanasia Push ‘Will Come Back’
Despite the defeat, Leadbeater immediately warned that supporters have no intention of abandoning their campaign.
Leadbeater said the issue “will come back,” although she stopped short of committing to personally introducing another bill.
“I know there are a lot of MPs who are deeply upset by what’s happened today,” Leadbeater said.
“There are a lot of people in the House of Lords who are deeply upset, again, people who have their own experiences, so the issue will come back.”
“Whether it comes back next year, the year after that, I don’t know, but you’ve got to look at the international direction of travel – this choice is given to so many terminally ill people around the world now that we should be giving this choice to people in this country as well.”
Asked whether she would personally lead another attempt, Leadbeater said she would need to consider it.
“I’d have to give it some deep consideration,” she said.
“You know, it’s not an easy issue to address.”
Her comments make clear that Friday’s defeat is unlikely to end attempts to legalize assisted suicide in Britain.
Labour MP Blasts ‘Unelected Peers’
Former Labour Business Secretary Peter Kyle reacted furiously to the defeat, blaming members of the House of Lords for derailing the previous attempt to change the law.
Kyle claimed the latest result was caused by a “tiny number of unelected peers who think themselves more important than the rest of us.”
“The different result was not on principle but a procedural issue caused by a tiny number of unelected peers who think themselves more important than the rest of us – elected or not,” Kyle said.
“So self-reverent any means are justified to them.
“The will of Parliament as expressed in all proceedings in the Commons last year has been undermined.
“I hope it’s not long before this sorry saga can be corrected.”
However, Friday’s vote was taken by elected MPs in the House of Commons, and they rejected the latest legislation by a 16-vote margin.
Push to Legalize Assisted Suicide Suffers Major Setback
The result represents a significant victory for opponents who have fought to prevent assisted suicide from becoming embedded in Britain’s healthcare system.
The proposal would have fundamentally changed the relationship between doctors and terminally ill patients by allowing medical professionals to participate in intentionally ending a patient’s life under specified circumstances.
Supporters sought to frame the change as a matter of personal choice and relief from suffering.
Opponents warned that introducing assisted suicide into the healthcare system would carry profound consequences for vulnerable people and a struggling NHS.
Those opponents have now prevailed.
Just a year after supporters celebrated winning a Commons vote on assisted dying, MPs have reversed course and rejected another attempt to change the law.
Leadbeater has already made clear that the euthanasia campaign “will come back.”
For now, however, the attempt to legalize assisted suicide in England and Wales has suffered a major defeat, and the existing protections against doctors deliberately helping patients end their lives remain intact.
