President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would “absolutely” support prohibiting Sharia law in the United States, arguing that Americans should be governed under one legal system rather than competing religious codes.
Trump made the remarks during a live interview with conservative radio host Glenn Beck, who asked whether the president would support or sign legislation aimed at barring Sharia law.
“Number one, on Sharia law, I would absolutely say that’s not this country,” Trump said.
“There’s no Sharia law,” the president continued.
“And you do have pockets of it, as you know.”
The president pointed to developments in Europe as a warning for the United States.
“And you go to London, you go to Paris,” Trump said.
“It’s almost like a second way of life. It’s ridiculous.”
Trump: ‘You Have One System’
Trump framed the issue as a matter of common sense rather than ideology.
“You and I have people that I think we’re more based on common sense than we are in ideology,” Trump told Beck.
“Good politics is all about common sense anyway.”
He then gave his clearest answer on whether he would act against Sharia law.
“But I would absolutely prohibit the Sharia law thing,” Trump said.
“And it is happening in this country a little bit.
“And when we see it, we take it out.
“And you have to take it out.”
“You have one system,” he added.
“We have a great system.
“Sometimes it’s very frustrating.
“But it’s the best there is that I can see.”

Americans are free to voluntarily follow religious practices so long as those practices do not supersede applicable law or constitutional protections.
Sharia Issue Emerges in Michigan Senate Race
Trump’s comments come as Sharia law has become an issue in Michigan’s closely watched U.S. Senate race.
Socialist Democrat Abdul El-Sayed is facing Republican Mike Rogers in November after defeating Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) in the Democratic Party primary earlier this month.
The contest is expected to play an important role in the battle for control of the Senate.
Republicans have recently scrutinized El-Sayed over previous statements concerning Sharia law.
Vice President JD Vance criticized El-Sayed last week over remarks the Democrat made during a 2022 Council on American-Islamic Relations banquet, where he objected to efforts aimed at preventing courts from considering Sharia law.
El-Sayed Campaign Confirms Personal Adherence to Sharia Principles
El-Sayed’s campaign separately confirmed that he follows Sharia principles in his personal religious life after comments from a 2009 interview resurfaced.
Those remarks concerned El-Sayed’s decision to obtain a Sharia-compliant mortgage.
His campaign has maintained that his personal religious observance does not amount to supporting the imposition of religious law through government.
Trump’s comments nevertheless put the president firmly on record on the broader issue.
Asked directly whether he would support federal action against Sharia law, Trump left little room for interpretation.
“I would absolutely prohibit” it, Trump said.
His reasoning was equally direct: the United States has “one system.”
