Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is demanding answers after Pennsylvania officials announced two “measles-associated” deaths that the local county coroner’s office has no record of handling.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health and Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) announced on Wednesday that the state had recorded its first deaths associated with measles in 35 years.

Kennedy immediately challenged the announcement, saying officials had failed to provide critical information about the supposed deaths.

“The announcement appears to have been premature, and the deaths may even have been altogether fabricated by one of the Governor’s hopeful staffers,” Kennedy wrote on X.

“The Lancaster County Coroner says that it has no record of any measles deaths.

“State law requires that all measles deaths be reported to the coroner.”

Kennedy separately told reporters that Pennsylvania officials had not provided the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with information identifying the deaths.

“We’re trying to figure out … who those deaths were and whether they actually happened,” he said.

Coroner Says Infant Did Not Die from Measles

Lancaster County Coroner Steve Diamantoni said his office had not handled any deaths caused by measles.

His office did investigate the death of an infant who died shortly after birth from a ruptured spleen.

An autopsy determined that the primary cause of death was the spleen laceration, Diamantoni told The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The pathologist who performed the autopsy did not believe the death was related to measles, according to the coroner.

His office is still investigating what caused the infant’s spleen to rupture.

Pennsylvania health officials nevertheless included the infant among the two “measles-associated” deaths announced by the state.

Both individuals had tested positive for measles before their deaths and were unvaccinated, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The agency acknowledged that its terminology does not mean measles was necessarily the immediate cause of death.

The department said it uses “measles-associated” when “laboratory or epidemiologic evidence of measles is present, but the disease may not be assessed by the medical certifier or coroner to be the immediate cause of death.”

State Officials Stand by Announcement

Pennsylvania Health Secretary Dr. Debra Bogen defended the state’s classification.

“As a pediatrician with more than 30 years of caring for children, I have thoroughly reviewed the case investigation information and sadly can confirm that there were two recent measles-associated deaths in Lancaster County, which were reported to the CDC’s measles response team early [on Aug. 25],” Bogen said.

State officials have released few details about the second death beyond saying that the individual tested positive for measles and was unvaccinated.

Bogen and the Pennsylvania Department of Health also disputed the suggestion that every such death must necessarily be referred to a county coroner.

Pennsylvania law states that deaths “known or suspected to be due to contagious disease and constituting a public hazard” must be investigated by a coroner.

That discrepancy has intensified demands for the state to release more information about exactly what happened.

Officials Used Deaths to Push MMR Vaccination

After announcing the two deaths, Pennsylvania officials urged residents to receive the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine.

“This illness and death from measles is completely preventable,” Shapiro said during an August 26 briefing in Lancaster.

“If you’re fully vaccinated, you’re not getting the measles,” the Democrat governor claimed.

The CDC lists one year as the standard minimum age for the MMR vaccine, although babies as young as six months can receive the shot in some areas experiencing measles outbreaks.

The Pennsylvania cases were described as the first measles-associated deaths reported in the United States this year.

Three such deaths were reported in 2025.

Local doctors said those deaths were caused by measles, while Kennedy has previously argued that the individuals had other illnesses, including a girl suffering from mononucleosis.

Republican Commissioner Demands Transparency

Lancaster County Commissioner Josh Parsons, a Republican who first drew attention to the coroner’s comments, said the infant’s autopsy demonstrated the difference between dying with measles and dying from the disease.

Parsons said Pennsylvania officials must now provide information about the second case.

“The people of Lancaster County deserve to have transparency over whether there were actually two measles deaths or not,” Parsons said in a social media post.

“You cannot drop a bombshell like this and then essentially say all the information around it is top secret,” the Republican county commissioner added.

“The only way for government to have trust with citizens is through transparency and honesty.”

That remains the central unanswered question.

Pennsylvania officials announced two “measles-associated” deaths and used the cases to promote vaccination.

But the county coroner says his office recorded no measles deaths, the infant case cited by the state was attributed by autopsy to a ruptured spleen, and officials have disclosed almost nothing about the second death.

Kennedy is now demanding that Pennsylvania explain exactly who died, what caused their deaths, and why the cases were publicly presented as associated with measles.
