Canada has plunged deeper into a devastating population crisis as alarming new government data shows deaths are now outnumbering births.

The latest figures from Statistics Canada show that the first quarter of 2026 marked the third consecutive quarter in which the country’s population declined.

Canada’s population stood at 41.4 million on April 1.

That was a drop of 55,025 people from the start of the year.

Officials attributed much of the decline to net emigration.

However, the more alarming trend is now impossible to ignore.

Canadians are no longer having enough children to offset the number of people dying.

Births Fall Behind Deaths

Between January and March, Canada recorded 90,173 births.

During the same period, the country recorded 90,328 deaths.

That means Canada suffered a natural population decline of 155 people.

The number may appear small on paper.

But the trend marks a dramatic shift for a country that, for more than 75 years, routinely saw births exceed deaths every quarter.

The first quarter of 2026 was the fifth quarter on record in which Canada recorded a natural population decline.

The pattern first emerged in the first quarter of 2022.

Before that, Canada regularly posted natural population increases in the tens of thousands.

Now, the country is sliding into a demographic crisis seen across much of the developed West.

Quebec Suffers Largest Natural Decline

The trend is most pronounced in Quebec.

The province recorded 18,550 births and 21,350 deaths in the first quarter.

That left Quebec with the largest natural population decline in Canada.

Newfoundland and Labrador also suffered a record drop.

The province recorded just 865 births and 1,806 deaths between January and March.

That marked its largest natural population decline on record.

The numbers reveal the depth of the collapse.

In some provinces, deaths are not merely edging past births.

They are overwhelming them.

Alberta Remains an Exception

Alberta stood out as one of the few provinces still recording natural population growth.

The province reported 12,857 births and 9,289 deaths in the first quarter.

That produced a natural increase of 3,568 people.

Alberta had roughly 38 percent more births than deaths during the quarter.

Only three other provinces posted positive natural increases.

Ontario recorded an increase of 1,019.

Manitoba recorded an increase of 485.

Saskatchewan recorded an increase of 446.

All three territories also recorded more births than deaths.

Canada Faces Western Demographic Collapse

Canada’s latest population numbers point to a crisis that mass immigration and government statistics can no longer hide.

A nation’s future depends on families, births, and the next generation.

When deaths surpass births, the long-term consequences hit every part of society.

The workforce shrinks.

Health care systems come under more pressure.

Pension systems become harder to sustain.
