British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Monday that he will step down as both prime minister and leader of the leftist Labour Party following months of mounting political turmoil, internal rebellion, and devastating election setbacks that left his leadership hanging by a thread.
Starmer said he had concluded that he could no longer unite the party and would remain in office only until Labour selects a new leader in the coming weeks.
“Every decision I’ve taken has been about putting the country I love first,” Starmer said during a statement outside 10 Downing Street.
“That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party.
“I have spoken to his majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision.”
“The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election,” he added.
“I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace.”
Labour Collapse Sparks Leadership Crisis
Starmer’s resignation follows weeks of political chaos after Labour suffered crushing losses in local elections, surrendering roughly 1,500 council seats and losing control of more than 25 local councils.
The setbacks were driven in large part by significant gains from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party, which made major inroads into Labour strongholds, while the Green Party also expanded its support in traditionally left-leaning urban areas.
The election results triggered fresh concerns among Labour lawmakers about the party’s direction and raised questions about whether Starmer remained capable of leading Labour into the next general election.
Pressure intensified as more than 80 Labour MPs publicly called for him to step aside.
According to reports, support for Starmer collapsed across multiple factions of the party, including centrists, soft-left members, and hard-left activists.
Cabinet Resignations Deepen Turmoil
The crisis escalated further after members of Starmer’s own government began resigning and openly calling for a leadership transition.
Jess Phillips resigned from her government role after reportedly urging Starmer to step aside.
She argued Labour needed stronger leadership and warned the government was failing to deliver the change voters had been promised.
Miatta Fahnbulleh also resigned and publicly called for what she described as an “orderly transition” to new leadership.
The resignations exposed deep divisions within the governing party and fueled speculation that Starmer’s position had become untenable.
While some senior Labour figures continued defending the prime minister, the pressure ultimately proved too great to withstand.
Foreign Policy Disputes Added to Political Troubles
Starmer’s domestic challenges were compounded by criticism over his handling of international affairs, particularly following a dispute with President Donald Trump over military operations involving Iran.
The British prime minister initially resisted U.S. requests involving British military facilities during the conflict, drawing criticism from Trump and others who questioned his leadership.
Although Starmer later approved limited cooperation, the decision angered anti-war members of his own party while failing to satisfy critics who argued he appeared indecisive.
Polling and voter focus groups reportedly showed growing concerns about Starmer’s leadership style, with some voters describing him as weak and reactive.
He also faced scrutiny over his appointment of Peter Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to Washington, reviving controversy surrounding Mandelson’s past associations and political record.
Labour Faces Contentious Succession Battle
Attention now shifts to the contest to replace Starmer, a race that will determine both Labour’s next leader and Britain’s next prime minister.
Several high-profile Labour figures are already being discussed as potential successors.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting is viewed as a leading candidate from the party’s centrist wing, while Andy Burnham remains popular among many grassroots Labour supporters.
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner is also expected to play a significant role in the leadership battle.
The contest is expected to expose deeper ideological divisions within Labour as the party struggles to recover from electoral setbacks and growing voter dissatisfaction.
For Starmer, the resignation marks a dramatic end to a leadership tenure that began with promises of stability and renewal but ultimately unraveled amid political setbacks, internal divisions, and a widening loss of confidence within his own party.
