War Secretary Pete Hegseth delivered a blunt message to America’s NATO allies on Thursday, warning that European nations can no longer rely indefinitely on the United States to shoulder the continent’s defense burden.
Speaking to NATO officials in Brussels, Hegseth announced a six-month review of U.S. force deployments across Europe and made clear that the outcome will depend largely on whether European governments finally follow through on long-standing promises to strengthen their own militaries.
Hegseth Announces Major Review of U.S. Military Presence
Hegseth said the review will be comprehensive and aimed at determining whether NATO members are prepared to take primary responsibility for defending Europe.
“This will be a real review,” Hegseth said.
“It will be designed to ensure that NATO is moving fast and irreversibly toward Europe leading, stepping up to take primary responsibility for the defense of Europe.”
The remarks reflect a growing view within the Trump administration that European allies have spent decades underinvesting in defense while depending heavily on American military protection.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly argued that NATO members must contribute more to their own security rather than relying on U.S. taxpayers to carry the bulk of the burden.
Hegseth Blasts Allies Over Iran Conflict
The War Secretary also sharply criticized several NATO countries for refusing to provide assistance during recent operations against Iran.
According to Hegseth, some allies denied U.S. forces access to military bases and airspace that would traditionally be available during major operations.
“These allies, they put America’s sons and daughters, our sons and daughters, at risk by denying them the predictable access, basing and overflight that never should have been in question at all,” he said.
The criticism comes after months of tension between Washington and some European governments over military operations in the Middle East.
Defense Spending, Borders, and Western Civilization
Hegseth expanded his criticism beyond military cooperation, arguing that many European governments have prioritized progressive political agendas while neglecting national defense.
“Instead of tanks and fighters and air defenses, the focus has been on gender equity and climate change and defense austerity,” Hegseth said.
“Europe’s borders flew wide open, welfare states expanded, defense budgets cratered.
“Along with Europe’s belief in itself and its civilization.”
The comments echoed concerns frequently raised by President Trump and other administration officials who argue that Western nations have weakened themselves by focusing on social and political causes while allowing military readiness to deteriorate.
Germany Signals New Direction
Hegseth’s warning comes as Germany has begun signaling a major shift in its defense posture.
German Ambassador to the United States Jens Hanefeld told Fox News that Berlin intends to take on a larger military role within NATO after decades of relying heavily on American protection.
“Germany is stepping up — we heard the call!” Hanefeld said.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has pledged to build the strongest conventional military force in Europe, a goal Hanefeld said is now supported by Germany’s broader security strategy.
“Russia’s illegal war of aggression has shaken old certainties in Europe and Germany as the international rules we have relied on are being challenged,” Hanefeld said.
“This changes the strategic environment we operate in.”
Hanefeld also pointed to Germany’s support for Ukraine as evidence that Berlin is prepared to assume greater responsibility for European security.
“Today, Germany is Ukraine’s largest supporter,” he said.
“Germany’s decision to become Europe’s strongest conventional army, well anchored in the NATO alliance, is an ongoing commitment.”
Pressure Builds On NATO Allies
The Pentagon review is expected to be closely watched throughout Europe, as governments assess whether the Trump administration could eventually reduce America’s military footprint on the continent.
For years, U.S. officials have complained that many NATO members failed to meet defense spending commitments while relying on American troops, equipment, and taxpayer funding to guarantee European security.
Hegseth’s remarks suggest that patience in Washington is wearing thin and that NATO allies may soon face increasing pressure to prove they are willing and able to defend themselves.
