A coalition of Republican attorneys general is demanding answers after officials made an alarming discovery that America’s drinking water is contaminated with dangerous abortion drugs.
Officials fear that the water supply is being spiked with the abortion pill mifepristone.
However, the chilling discovery has received little public attention.
The growing concern comes as chemical abortions now account for the majority of abortions nationwide.
Many now fear that the popularity of mifepristone has led to the drug entering the water system at dangerously high levels.
The surge in the use of these drugs raises new questions about the public health consequences of disposing of abortion-related medical waste through household plumbing systems.
Fourteen state attorneys general have formally urged the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to investigate how mifepristone and its chemical byproducts are entering public waterways and potentially exposing millions of Americans to unintended health risks.
The officials warn that the issue could have serious implications for drinking water safety, particularly for pregnant women.
Surge in Chemical Abortions Sparks New Concerns
When the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved mifepristone in 2000, the agency concluded that the drug would have only a negligible environmental impact.
At the time, chemical abortions represented a relatively small percentage of all abortions performed in the United States.
That landscape has changed dramatically.
According to data from the Guttmacher Institute, chemical abortions accounted for just 6 percent of abortions in the year following mifepristone’s approval.
By 2020, that figure had climbed to 53 percent.
By 2023, it had surged to 63 percent.
The attorneys general argue that the explosive growth in the use of abortion pills, combined with relaxed federal regulations, has fundamentally altered the environmental equation.
In a letter sent to the EPA, the coalition noted that the FDA has eliminated several safeguards that previously required in-person medical supervision and follow-up care.
The changes have shifted more chemical abortions into private homes, where abortion-related waste is commonly disposed of through toilets and household sewage systems.
Questions Raised About Wastewater Treatment
The attorneys general warn that conventional wastewater treatment systems were never designed to remove the chemical compounds associated with abortion drugs.
According to their letter, metabolites from mifepristone remain biologically active even after excretion.
The coalition argues that these compounds may continue interacting with human hormone receptors after entering waterways.
“The FDA has eliminated many of the protections that minimized the health risks posed by mifepristone and its approved generics,” the letter states.
The officials further warned that increased chemical abortions are resulting in “tons of chemically tainted medical waste being flushed into American waterways.”
Aid Access, an organization that helps facilitate access to abortion pills, advises users on its website that abortion-related remains, including placental tissue, embryos, and blood, can be flushed down the toilet or disposed of in plastic bags.
That guidance has intensified concerns among critics who argue the issue deserves closer environmental scrutiny.
Risks to Pregnant Women
The coalition argues that one of the most troubling unanswered questions involves potential exposure risks for pregnant women.
Mifepristone works by blocking progesterone receptors, interfering with hormones necessary to sustain pregnancy.
The drug is specifically designed to terminate pregnancies by disrupting progesterone activity while also triggering uterine contractions and cervical softening.
The attorneys general warn that if mifepristone or its metabolites accumulate in drinking water at sufficient concentrations, the consequences for expectant mothers could be significant.
“The health of pregnant women and Americans everywhere may depend on it,” the letter states.
The officials are asking the EPA to add mifepristone and its generic equivalents to the agency’s Contaminant Candidate List, which identifies substances that may require future regulation under federal drinking water standards.
States Demand Federal Investigation
The request was signed by attorneys general from Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Texas.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said the issue warrants immediate federal attention.
“As medical waste is discarded and washed away, it risks contaminating the very water supply millions of Americans drink every day, and the long-term consequences could be severe,” Marshall said.
The coalition argues that Americans deserve clear answers about whether abortion drugs are entering public water systems and whether existing safeguards are adequate to protect public health.
As chemical abortions continue to rise nationwide, pressure is mounting on federal regulators to investigate whether the widespread use of mifepristone is creating environmental risks that were never fully considered when the drug was approved more than two decades ago.
