Michigan Democrats are pushing a controversial new legislative package to begin euthanizing members of the public under radical “assisted suicide” laws.
The bills would legalize medically assisted suicide for certain terminally ill adults, adding the state to a growing list of jurisdictions embracing the slippery slope of so-called “death with dignity” laws.
The proposed legislation would create a “Death with Dignity Act” allowing adults diagnosed with terminal illnesses and given six months or less to live to request life-ending drugs from doctors.
Supporters frame the measure as compassionate end-of-life care.
Critics, however, warn that it represents another dangerous step toward normalizing assisted death while eroding long-standing moral, medical, and ethical protections surrounding the sanctity of human life.
Democrats Move to Expand Assisted Suicide Access
Under the proposal, patients seeking medically assisted suicide would need to submit both written and oral requests and wait at least 15 days between requests.
The legislation also requires evaluations from two doctors, possible mental health assessments, and discussions about alternatives, including hospice care and pain management.
Patients would also be informed that they can rescind the request at any time.
The package explicitly states that lethal injection, mercy killing, or direct euthanasia would remain prohibited.
However, opponents argue the legislation still opens the door to state-sanctioned suicide under the guise of “medical aid.”
The bills also include broad legal protections for doctors, pharmacists, and other licensed professionals who participate in the process.
Healthcare providers would be shielded from criminal and civil liability if they comply with the law.
The legislation further bars state licensing boards from disciplining medical professionals involved in assisted suicide procedures carried out under the act.
Insurance Protections Raise Alarm Bells
The proposal goes even further by preventing insurance companies from treating medically assisted death as suicide for policy purposes.
Life insurance suicide exclusions would not apply to patients who die under the Death with Dignity Act.
Health insurers would also be prohibited from denying or limiting coverage because a patient plans to end his or her life through the program.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services would oversee compliance, review cases, and publish annual reports.
The department would also gain access to prescription records tied to life-ending drugs.
Critics warn that the expanding legalization of assisted suicide across the West increasingly treats vulnerable patients as financial liabilities rather than lives worth protecting.
Republicans, Faith Leaders Push Back
Republicans and religious leaders have long opposed assisted suicide laws, arguing they put pressure on the elderly, disabled, and terminally ill while fundamentally corrupting the medical profession.
Concerns have also been raised in countries and states where similar laws have steadily expanded far beyond their original “limited” scope.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) previously warned about the broader consequences of normalizing assisted death.
“So-called assisted death endangers the weak and marginalized in a society, and it corrupts medicine and erodes our obligations to family,” Johnson said.
“And we will promote and respect every life, no matter how old or sick or weak those persons may be.”
Michigan Democrats’ proposal follows a broader push across left-leaning states and Western nations to expand legalized assisted suicide policies.
Delaware, New York, and Illinois each approved similar legislation in 2025 …all Democrat controlled
Countries including Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, Spain, and Colombia have also legalized various forms of physician-assisted suicide or euthanasia.
Critics increasingly point to Canada as a warning sign after the country dramatically expanded its Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program in recent years.
The rapid expansion of euthanasia is raising global concerns about where such policies ultimately lead.
