A massive citizen-led integrity investigation into Detroit’s 2020 election has uncovered alarming irregularities involving absentee ballots, missing envelopes, questionable voter records, and what investigators describe as evidence of systemic failures in Michigan’s mail-in voting process.

The effort is led by New Jersey resident Yehuda Miller, Check My Vote founder Phani Mantravadi, and Patty McMurray of The Gateway Pundit.

The investigation has mobilized more than 100 volunteers who are now reviewing nearly one million election-related documents obtained from Detroit and Wayne County through a lengthy Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) legal battle.

According to the investigators, one of their most explosive findings so far involves absentee ballots cast from taxpayer-subsidized housing facilities in Detroit.

After reviewing records tied to 51 subsidized housing units, the team says it discovered that 12.4% of mail-in ballot votes were incomplete, rendering them invalid.

The incomplete ballots had no corresponding ballot envelope on file.

However, Michigan law requires absentee ballots to be returned inside official, signed envelopes before they can legally be counted.

Yet, the incomplete and invalid ballots were still counted in the election results.

Thousands of Ballots Lack Legally Required Envelopes

The volunteer team says it painstakingly matched absentee voter records against official mail-in ballot envelopes obtained through Miller’s FOIA lawsuit against Detroit.

Their findings reveal that thousands of mail-in votes may have been counted without the legally required envelope documentation.

Under Michigan law, absentee ballots must be sealed inside official return envelopes containing voter signatures and dates.

Investigators cited Michigan statute MCL 168.764a, which states that absentee ballots lacking proper return envelopes or valid voter signatures are not eligible to be counted.

The law also classifies knowingly processing illegal absentee ballots as election fraud under MCL 168.932, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

“So what happened to all of the missing absentee envelopes, and who counted all of the ballots knowing they were legally required?” the investigators asked in their public release.

Volunteers Reviewing Nearly One Million Election Documents

The investigation has become one of the largest privately organized election record reviews in the country.

According to the group, many of the documents arrived disorganized and out of sequence after Detroit officials allegedly resisted turning them over for years.

Mantravadi reportedly built a custom digital platform to organize and sequence more than 155,000 absentee ballot envelopes by counting board, allowing volunteers to manually review each document for anomalies.

The team says volunteers are spending up to 12 hours per day reviewing records, cross-checking data, and flagging ballots they believe should never have been processed.

Investigators stressed that all findings are being repeatedly reviewed and verified before public release.

Investigators Highlight “Ghost Voters,” Missing Signatures, And Suspicious Dates

The report released several examples of ballots that investigators claim raise serious questions about Detroit’s 2020 election handling.

Among the examples highlighted:

   • A voter allegedly registered and voted from what investigators describe as a nonexistent Detroit address.

   • Ballots with signatures dated after the official city “received” timestamp.

   • Envelopes allegedly processed despite missing signatures or dates.

   • A ballot mailed from Germany and allegedly received the same day it was signed overseas.

   • Ballots tied to overseas UOCAVA voting rules investigators argue are vulnerable to abuse.

   • Envelopes with multiple conflicting timestamp markings.

   • Ballots where mailing labels were completely scribbled out.

   • Ballots allegedly issued despite being marked “rejected.”

The investigators also revisited prior claims involving what they call “ghost votes.”

The “ghost votes” are ballots where ovals for write-in candidates were filled in, but accompanying candidate names were left blank.

They claim more than 10,000 ballots displayed that pattern, potentially triggering manual adjudication processes.

Questions Mount Over Detroit Election Oversight

The investigation directly raises questions about the actions of Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey and former Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson during the 2020 election.

The report notes that Benson was previously criticized by a judge after mailing millions of unsolicited absentee ballot applications statewide during the pandemic-era election.

Investigators argue the mass mail-in voting expansion weakened chain-of-custody safeguards while local clerks allegedly failed to enforce signature verification and envelope requirements.

The team also renewed scrutiny over earlier controversies surrounding Detroit’s 2020 election, including late-night ballot deliveries at Detroit’s TCF Center and allegations tied to the GBI Strategies voter registration scandal.

Citizen Investigators Say Work Is Far from Finished

The group says it intends to continue releasing findings as volunteers work through the remaining hundreds of thousands of documents.

Investigators insist they deliberately refused to hand the project over to government agencies or outside organizations out of concern that evidence could be ignored, mishandled, or buried.

“The future of our elections hangs in the balance,” the group wrote.

“We can no longer afford to look the other way.”
