A senior member of President Donald Trump’s administration has delivered a blunt assessment of the trade relationship between the United States and Canada, warning that the two economies are fundamentally incompatible in key respects, pointing the finger squarely at the Canadian government’s commitment to globalization.
The warning comes as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s deep ties to foreign elites and Communist China draw intensifying scrutiny.
Trade Talks Stall as Canada Doubles Down on Globalism
At the heart of the dispute is the future of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement.
U.S. officials are pushing for stronger rules of origin, language that ensures the majority of traded goods actually originate from within North America.
Carney’s government has so far refused to engage seriously with those demands, and has instead pledged to double non-U.S. exports over the next ten years, a move critics say signals Canada’s intent to look elsewhere for its economic future.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer made the American position crystal clear, warning that “if the Canadians don’t want to have the rule of origin, then we’ll have to have some other border control to make sure that we aren’t disadvantaged.”
The Carney government has yet to announce when official trade talks will even begin.
Trump canceled talks last October after the Ontario government placed anti-tariff trade ads inside the United States.
Carney’s Globalist and Chinese Communist Ties Under the Microscope
While Canada stonewalls Washington, Carney has been cozying up to Beijing.
The Liberal prime minister recently visited China and declared that Canada’s relationship with the country is more “predictable” than its relationship with the U.S. under Trump.
He also struck a deal with China involving Canadian agricultural products, including canola, in which Canada agreed to drop significant tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles and import thousands of them in the coming year.
Carney has not hidden who he is.
Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre has labeled him the World Economic Forum’s “golden boy.”
Carney himself has publicly admitted he is an “elitist” and a “globalist.”
Investigative journalist Sam Cooper has gone further, publishing a detailed exposé on his Substack, The Bureau, titled “The Carney-Trudeau Nexus: How Financial Elites from Davos to Beijing Are Shaping Canada’s Next Federal Election.”
Cooper’s report presents what he describes as compelling evidence that Carney is deeply influenced by an elite network of foreign actors with ties to both Communist China and the WEF.
“At its core, this network of remarkable figures — whose stated goals center on consolidating financial power across borders to coordinate carbon-reduction policies and progressive social outcomes — includes not just Carney and Trudeau but also former Canadian ambassador to China Dominic Barton, Trudeau campaign backers Mark Wiseman and Gerald Butts, and AIIB’s Jin Liqun, a senior Chinese Communist Party operative,” Cooper wrote.
Cooper argued that understanding this network is not a theoretical exercise for Canadian voters.
“For Canadian voters, understanding the intricate plutocratic web surrounding Trudeau and Carney is not an academic exercise — it offers a glimpse into the forces lining up to shape the nation’s climate, trade, and social policies,” he wrote.
His analysis concluded that both Trudeau and Carney are “so thoroughly woven together through global forums like the WEF that they are indistinguishable.”
Cooper warns that “while Carney seeks to distance himself from Trudeau’s unpopular record, his closest allies remain the same WEF-linked figures who helped shape Trudeau’s policies.”
A Decades-Long Pattern
Carney’s ties to China did not begin with his time as prime minister.
During his tenure at the Bank of England, Carney negotiated a deal with the People’s Bank of China that opened English banks to the Chinese Renminbi currency.
Carney defended the move publicly at the time, stating, “Helping the internationalization of the Renminbi is a global good, consistent with London’s historic role.”
With official trade talks still unscheduled, Canada pivoting toward China, and Carney’s globalist allegiances on full display, the Trump administration’s assessment is increasingly difficult to argue with.
The two nations’ economic visions are not just different; they may be irreconcilable.
