Hal Lambert, a prominent supporter of President Donald Trump and CEO of Point Bridge Capital, has sparked controversy by warning that former President Barack Obama’s political network is working in coordination with Pope Leo XIV to weaken Republican support among Catholic voters ahead of the midterm elections.

Lambert made the remarks during an appearance on CNN’s NewsNight with Abby Phillip.

He laid out what he described as a coordinated political effort involving the Vatican and top Democrat strategists.

Lambert Alleges Coordinated Political Effort

“This is 100 percent political, ok?” Lambert said.

“This is all about trying to hurt President Trump’s Catholic vote during the midterms and Republicans in the midterms.”

He pointed to a recent visit by longtime Obama strategist David Axelrod to the Vatican, as well as discussions about a potential visit by Obama himself, arguing that the timing aligned with increased criticism of Trump administration policies from Pope Leo.

“If you look at what, play out the dots here,” Lambert said.

“David Axelrod goes and visits Pope Leo last week.

“They’re talking about Obama going to visit Pope Leo.

“All of a sudden, now, Pope Leo is out attacking Trump and the policies of the United States and Israel,” he continued, also referencing statements from multiple Catholic leaders criticizing U.S. immigration policy.

“This is all about trying to get the Catholic vote against Trump,” Lambert added.

CNN Panel Pushes Back

Host Abby Phillip challenged Lambert’s claims, saying his theory had “a lot of flaws.”

She argued that Pope Francis, Leo’s predecessor, had also met with U.S. officials, including Vice President JD Vance.

Lambert dismissed the comparison.

“There’s no flaws,” he asserted.

“Axelrod is the chief strategist for Obama.

“The pope is saying he’s not political.

“Why is he meeting with the chief strategist for both Obama’s campaigns and in the White House?”

CNN commentator Bakari Sellers offered an alternative explanation, noting that both Axelrod and Pope Leo share ties to Chicago, suggesting the meeting may not have been political.

Lambert rejected that explanation.

Trump Escalates Feud With Pope Leo

Lambert’s comments followed a sharp escalation in tensions between President Trump and Pope Leo XIV.

In a Sunday post on Truth Social, Trump criticized the pope as “weak” and accused him of aligning with the “Radical Left.”

“Leo should be thankful because, as everyone knows, he was a shocking surprise,” Trump wrote.

“If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican.”

The president also praised the pope’s brother, writing, “He gets it, and Leo doesn’t!”

Pope Responds, Says He Has “No Fear”

Pope Leo responded Monday, saying he would not be intimidated by political criticism and framed his comments as part of his religious mission.

“I have no fear of the Trump administration, or speaking out loudly of the message of the gospel,” he said.

At the same time, the pope indicated he did not want to escalate the conflict further, saying he did not intend to engage in a prolonged debate.

Broader Political Stakes

The clash highlights growing tensions between the Trump administration and the Vatican, particularly over issues such as illegal immigration and foreign policy.

It also underscores the political importance of Catholic voters, who have historically played a key role in national elections and have shifted in recent cycles.
