A Canadian doctor is sounding the alarm as the Liberal government under Prime Minister Mark Carney faces mounting pressure to halt a controversial plan to begin euthanizing people suffering from mental illness.

At a press conference on Parliament Hill, members of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition (EPC), including Montreal physician Peter Blusanovics, urged lawmakers to back legislation aimed at stopping what critics warn is a dangerous and irreversible shift.

“A Bypass Toward Suicide”

Dr. Blusanovics, who has treated patients with mental illness, warned that expanding so-called “Medical Assistance in Dying” (MAiD) to this group would effectively abandon vulnerable Canadians.

“Bill C-218 needs to pass to put a stop to euthanasia for people with mental illness,” he said.

“Basic needs are currently not being met in our health care system.”

He issued a stark warning about what the policy represents:

“Without this bill, we are condoning a bypass towards suicide and blatantly admitting defeat.

“Mental illness needs to be properly identified and treated.”

Blusanovics emphasized that patients struggling with mental illness are not seeking death, but relief.

“I know that offering medical aid in dying provides no solution,” he said.

“Everyone deserves the right to be treated with dignity and humanity.”

Expansion Set for 2027

Canada is currently on track to expand euthanasia access to individuals with mental illness in 2027, following the passage of Bill C-7.

In response, Conservative lawmakers are pushing back with multiple legislative efforts.

Bill C-218, introduced by Tamara Jansen, seeks to block the expansion entirely.

Meanwhile, Garnett Genuis has introduced separate legislation aimed at preventing coercion.

The move seeks to ensure that no authority figure can suggest euthanasia to a patient who has not explicitly requested it.

Jansen has been blunt about what’s at stake:

“Allowing ‘medical assistance in dying’ for those with mental illness is not healthcare, that’s not compassion, it’s abandonment.”

As Slay News previously reported, a Canadian government hearing revealed that the parameters for those with mental illness who would qualify for MAiD are disturbingly broad.

The hearing revealed that “experts” are now openly arguing for “assisted suicide” to be extended to people suffering from depression and eating disorders under the new mental illness expansion.

Canada’s Euthanasia Surge Raises Red Flags

Canada’s euthanasia program has expanded rapidly since being legalized in 2016 under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The current government is continuing that trajectory under Carney.

The taxpayer-funded program has grown so quickly that euthanasia is now the sixth-leading cause of death in the country.

Critics warn that expanding the program further, especially to those suffering from mental illness, crosses a dangerous line, particularly as support systems for those patients remain inadequate.

As lawmakers debate the next phase of Canada’s euthanasia policy, Blusanovics and other advocates are making their position clear that expanding access to assisted death for the mentally ill is not a solution.

It’s a surrender.
