Vice President JD Vance’s anti-fraud task force has suspended 447 hospices and 23 home health agencies in Los Angeles as part of a sweeping crackdown on suspected Medicaid fraud, with total alleged losses exceeding $600 million.

The scale of the action represents a roughly 539% increase from early April figures, signaling an aggressive escalation in the administration’s effort to root out abuse in taxpayer-funded programs.

Massive Fraud Crackdown Expands Rapidly

Officials made clear the effort is far from over.

“Where there is fraud, the task force will find it,” a spokesperson for Vice President JD Vance said.

“We will not stop until every hard-earned taxpayer dollar goes toward the honest Americans who deserve them.”

A White House official echoed that message with a direct warning:

“To all fraudsters: good luck trying to hide from the Vice President’s task force…

“[The anti-fraud task force is] reviewing and pursuing every possible lead.

“These suspension numbers, and the dollar values saved, are only going to increase.”

The latest suspensions add to earlier actions, including a move to block $259.5 million in Medicaid funds to Minnesota following mounting concerns about fraud in that state’s programs.

California Democrats Advance Controversial Bill

The crackdown comes as California Democrats move forward with legislation that critics say could shield fraudulent organizations from scrutiny.

Assemblywoman Mia Bonta (D-CA) introduced AB 2624, a bill framed as protecting “immigration support services providers” from harassment and threats.

The legislation has already passed a key committee in an 11–2 vote.

According to the bill’s summary, it would expand confidentiality protections under the state’s Safe at Home program, allowing certain individuals and organizations to keep their addresses out of public records.

Bonta defended the measure, arguing that “doxxing” is not legitimate journalism and that protections are necessary for those working with immigrant communities.

“This is a time when we absolutely need to make sure that people are able to be protected as they seek to do the good work to protect our immigrant communities,” she said.

Critics Warn of Chilling Effect on Investigations

Critics, however, argue the bill could be used to deter investigations into fraud.

Assemblyman Carl DeMaio (R-CA) sharply criticized the proposal:

“California Democrats are trying to intimidate citizen watchdog journalists and protect waste and fraud happening in far-Left-wing NGOs,” DeMaio said.

“AB 2624 can only be described as the ‘Stop Nick Shirley Act’ — a bill designed to silence citizen journalists exposing fraud and abuse of taxpayer dollars.”

He added:

“Instead of fixing the fraud problems being uncovered, Sacramento politicians are trying to shut down the people exposing them.

“AB 2624 would allow activists and taxpayer-funded organizations to demand the removal of video evidence — even if it captures misconduct in plain view — and threatens journalists with massive financial penalties.”

Investigative Reporting Fuels Debate

Independent journalist Nick Shirley, who has reported on alleged fraud in healthcare and daycare programs, also criticized the legislation.

“California is trying to pass a bill that would criminalize investigative journalism with misdemeanors, $10,000 fines, imprisonment, and content takedown,” Shirley posted on X.

“Under AB 2624, government-funded entities like the Somali ‘Learing’ Daycare centers would be protected from being exposed if they operated inside California,” he added.

Growing Clash Over Fraud and Oversight

The timing of the bill has intensified the debate, with federal officials expanding enforcement actions while state lawmakers consider new privacy protections.

With hundreds of providers now suspended and investigations ongoing, the clash highlights a broader national fight over fraud, accountability, and the role of investigative reporting in exposing misuse of public funds.
