‘RINO’ Senator Refuses to Support Trump’s AG Nominee Unless They Back Democrats on Jan 6

Blogger Comment: If this does not show the American people that there are some republicans who are treasonous and fight against US President Trump and the protection of the American people, nothing will…for these people would try to blackmail their own US President into allowing all things wrong to happen to Americans and they are not really Republicans or Democrats as harm should never have a political name…

.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) is warning that he will refuse to support President Donald Trump’s eventual nominee for attorney general, drawing a hard line over how candidates characterize the January 6 protest.

The stance raises the possibility that a single Republican senator could complicate or even derail confirmation of Trump’s next attorney general, given his role on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Tillis Draws Hard Line On January 6

Speaking with Kaitlan Collins on CNN, Tillis made clear that his support hinges on a nominee’s position regarding January 6.

The senator asserted that he would not support any nominee who doesn’t back the Democrats on characterizing Jan. 6 as an “attack” or “insurrection.”

“For me, the threshold for somebody following Pam Bondi ends the moment I hear they said one thing that excused the events of January the 6th,” Tillis said.

“I’ve been very clear on that.

“So I hope whoever they have in mind to follow General Bondi is very clear-eyed on my position on Jan. 6.”

He added that he has previously blocked nominees over similar concerns and would do so again.

“That’s why I didn’t support two other nominees who were coming through the Judiciary Committee.

“And I won’t support any nominee who thought that any element of January 6 was excused.”

Key Vote Could Make or Break Nominee

Tillis’ position carries significant weight because he sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The committee must approve any nominee before a full Senate vote.

With Democrats expected to oppose Trump’s pick unanimously, even a single Republican defection could be enough to stall or sink a nomination at the committee level.

The vacancy comes after Trump removed Attorney General Pam Bondi earlier this week.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche is currently serving in an acting capacity.

Potential Candidates Emerge

Several names have been floated as possible replacements, including Lee Zeldin, Jeanine Pirro, Sen. Eric Schmitt, FBI Deputy Director Andrew Bailey, and Blanche himself.

Any nominee will now face heightened scrutiny, not just from Democrats, but from within the Republican conference.

Past Opposition Signals Ongoing Rift

Tillis’ warning is consistent with his previous actions.

In 2025, he opposed Trump’s nomination of Ed Martin to serve as U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., citing concerns over Martin’s representation of January 6 defendants.

“I have no tolerance for anyone who entered the building on Jan. 6, and that’s probably where most of the friction was,” Tillis said at the time.

He acknowledged that some defendants may have been over-prosecuted.

However, Tillis maintained that others should not have received pardons.

Internal GOP Divide Reemerges

The dispute highlights a broader divide within Republican ranks over how to approach January 6, an issue that continues to surface in key confirmation battles.

Tillis, who is not seeking re-election, has increasingly broken with the party’s base on high-profile issues, positioning himself as a potential swing vote in critical moments.

With the attorney general role central to implementing Trump’s second-term agenda, the confirmation fight could quickly become a flashpoint, testing both party unity and the limits of Senate support for the president’s nominees.
