Vice President JD Vance sharply criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, calling recent comments directed at Hungarian leadership “completely scandalous” during a campaign appearance in Budapest alongside conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Vance’s remarks came in response to comments Zelensky made on March 5 regarding Hungary’s role in blocking a proposed €90 billion European Union loan package for Ukraine.
Zelensky Comments Spark Controversy
Zelensky expressed frustration over the delay, attributing it to a single individual within the EU and warning that, absent progress, Ukraine could escalate its response.
He said that otherwise, “we will simply give the address of that person to our Armed Forces.
“Our guys can call him and speak to him in their own language.”
The statement was widely interpreted as referring to Orbán, given Hungary’s opposition to the funding package.
Vance Condemns Remarks as ‘Scandalous’
Speaking in Budapest, Vance said he was initially unaware of Zelensky’s comments until they were brought to his attention.
“So, first of all, I wasn’t even aware that Zelensky had said that he was going to send private soldiers to the prime minister’s residence until yesterday,” Vance said.
“Viktor actually told me that, and I then looked it up, almost couldn’t believe it’s true, but it’s true.”
He added that the remarks were “completely scandalous.”
Vance framed the issue within broader concerns about foreign pressure and influence on Hungary, particularly as tensions persist over energy policy and European Union decision-making.

Relations between Hungary and Ukraine have remained strained since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
