A former teacher is sounding the alarm after publicly resigning from a prestigious private school, warning that a far-left “ideological takeover” is reshaping classrooms across America and silencing dissent.
In a New York Post op-ed, New Jersey teacher Dana Stangel-Plowe detailed why she walked away from Dwight-Englewood School in 2021.
She describes what she says was a rapid shift toward rigid ideological conformity driven by diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
Inside the ‘Transformation’ of the Classroom
Stangel-Plowe wrote that the changes began with faculty training sessions centered on privilege, followed by the hiring of a DEI officer tasked with “transforming” the school.
According to her account, that transformation quickly extended into every layer of school life, including curriculum, teacher training, and student programming.
Concepts such as systemic oppression were presented as settled fact rather than open for debate, she said.
Meanwhile, classic authors were dismissed as “dead white males” and removed from core coursework.
Stangel-Plowe described an environment where questioning the new framework was effectively off-limits.
Students were reluctant to speak openly, she said, and teachers privately avoided challenging what had become the prevailing orthodoxy.
After raising concerns internally and seeing no response, she chose to resign publicly.
A Chilling Effect on Free Speech
The former teacher warned that the consequences extended beyond academics.
She said the culture discouraged intellectual curiosity and honest discussion, core elements of education, replacing them with ideological alignment.
